How to Make Healthy Desserts
Desserts are often seen as indulgent treats that are high in sugar, fat, and calories. However, with a few simple swaps, it’s possible to create healthy desserts that are both delicious and made with good-for-you ingredients.
Here are some of my best tips and tricks for making desserts healthier.
Use natural sweeteners
One really easy way to make desserts healthier is to use a natural sweetener instead of refined, white sugar. Some great options include honey, maple syrup and coconut sugar. These sweeteners are less processed than white sugar, and they contain more nutrients and minerals.
Of course, natural sweeteners still contain sugar and calories so they should be used in moderation. With that in mind, many of the recipes you’ll find here on Eating Bird Food use less sugar than traditional recipes. Sugar substitutes like monkfruit and stevia are great options if you’re looking for no sugar, low calorie sweeteners. I should note that I don’t use or recommend artificial sweeteners… even though they are low in calories and do not raise blood sugar levels, there is some controversy around their use and I prefer natural sweeteners.
Choose healthier flours
Another way to make desserts healthier is to use whole-grain or real food flours instead of refined flour. These flours are higher in fiber and nutrients than their refined counterparts, and they can help you feel fuller for longer. Some great options include whole wheat flour, oat flour, coconut flour and almond flour.
Add fruit
I love using fruit to give my desserts a natural sweetness. You’ll find mashed bananas, applesauce, berries and medjool dates in a lot of my recipes!
Use healthy fats
Many desserts are high in saturated and trans fats, which studies have linked to an increased risk of heart disease. To make desserts healthier, I like using healthier fats like olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil or grass-fed butter.
With these simple tips you can create delicious desserts that are tasty and good for you too. So the next time you’re craving something sweet, try one of my healthy dessert options instead. Your taste buds and your body will thank you!
