These chocolate covered Snickers stuffed dates are made with real food ingredients and taste even better than an actual Snickers bar. Vegan + gluten-free.

Halloween is right around the corner and I know it can mark the start of crazy holiday eating habits. We often get hooked on sugar at Halloween, figure why not keep indulging for all the Thanksgiving recipes, and by the time the New Year rolls around we realize we’ve been living in stretchy pants and don’t recognize the girl in the mirror.

Been there, done that – but for the past few years I’ve made it my mission to stick with simple healthy habits and cut back on my sugar intake because I know how easy it is for my sugar eating habits to spiral out of control.

Swapping Processed Sugar For Natural Sugar

My number one tip for “cutting back on sugar” is actually switching to natural sugars like maple syrup, honey and Medjool dates. These Snickers stuffed dates are the perfect example of that.

As I said, Halloween is riiiiight around the corner and seeing those snack-size candies right when you walk in the grocery store is so tempting! Thankfully it’s easy to make something that tastes just as good (if not better) with real food ingredients and none of that processed junk. I’ve shared these peanut butter cups, healthy Twix bars and healthier Butterfingers, but today I’ve got a healthier Snickers recipe for ya!

Are Dates Healthy?

Overwhelmingly yes! I have an entire post on everything you need to know about Medjool dates if you want to do a deeper dive. However, for a quick glance, dates…

  • contain natural sugar, but have a low/medium glycemic index score due to containing a good amount of fiber, which helps to slow the release of the carbohydrates and give you sustained energy rather than spiking your blood sugar crazy high.
  • are also naturally low in fat.
  • are packed with nutrients like potassium (50% more potassium by weight than a banana), copper, magnesium, vitamin B6, niacin, calcium, iron and vitamin K.

Here’s What You Need

These incredible chocolate covered Snickers stuffed dates taste like a Snickers bar and are made with real, whole-food ingredients. And want to know the best part? You only need 5 simple ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen. Here’s what you need:

  • medjool dates – you can buy medjool dates that are already pitted or pit them yourself (it’s super easy). Two brands that I like are Natural Delights and Joolies. You can find Natural Delights in the produce section of most grocery stores (near the bananas) and Joolies are offered on Amazon and Thrive Market.
  • peanut butter – I prefer drippy/runny natural peanut butter but you can use any nut or seed butter you like. Some of my go-to brands of peanut butter are Crazy Richard’s, Whole Food’s 365 and Wild Friends (use EBF10 for 10% off your order). If you have a peanut allergy, any kind of nut butter will do!
  • chopped/crushed peanuts – an extra boost of peanut flavor and some crunch for texture! Try using a different nut if you have a peanut allergy to add some crunch.
  • dark chocolate chunks or chocolate chips – I love Lily’s chocolate chips for a low-sugar option and Enjoy Life chocolate chips for a dairy-free/soy-free option.
  • coconut oil – this is used to help melt the chocolate and helps it to become thinner, which makes it easier to dip the dates. You can skip it, but your melted chocolate will likely be pretty thick. I recommend using refined coconut oil if you don’t want any coconut flavor!

How to Make Snickers Stuffed Dates

If you’re hosting a Halloween party or want to make a fun dessert with kiddos, give these Snickers stuffed dates a try! This recipe really doesn’t get any easier. I’ll walk you through step by step (including steps for mama and steps for kids!)

1. Cut a slit in the dates and remove the pit (mamas, you can cut the slit and have your kiddos use their little fingers to grab the pits out!).

2. Fill each date with a spoonful of peanut butter (mamas, this step is probably best for you unless you have older kids!). Kids, you’re in charge of sprinkling each date with crushed peanuts after they’re filled with peanut butter.

3. Kids, dump the chocolate chips into a bowl and moms, you add the coconut oil. Heat until mixture is melted and stir to combine.

4. This might have to be a team effort unless your kids are older. The final step is to take each peanut butter filled and peanut topped date and dunk it in the chocolate. I used a toothpick to hold the date together while dipping. Pop the covered dates on parchment and place them in the fridge until the chocolate sets, about 10 minutes.

5. Enjoy this healthy, delicious treat as a family!

tip!
Use an icing bag or a zip-lock bag and cut a corner to easily fill dates with peanut butter!

Make a Single Serving

Have a craving for Snickers and want to quickly satisfy it? Make a single Snickers stuffed date and indulge immediately! Just use 1 date, 1/2 teaspoon of peanut butter, 1 teaspoon crushed peanuts and about 1 Tablespoon of melted chocolate.

How to Store Snickers Stuffed Dates

I recommend storing these bites in an airtight container in the fridge. They should last up to one week… but I bet they’ll be gone before then! You can also store these treats in the freezer for 1-2 months.

  1. OMG!!! These are awesome! I have made them numerous times and they completely satisfy my craving for something sweet. Thank you for a great recipe that I will be using forever.

These have been on my list to make for awhile and finally did so this weekend. Can’t believe I waited so long…they are amazing! Taste just like the snickers eggs but much better for you! I have a feeling these will become a regular treat staple for me!

    1. Yay!! I’m so happy to hear that. 🙂 Thanks for coming back to leave a comment + star rating, Kacee. I so appreciate it! <3

These stuffed date snickers are so yummy! The perfect snack for a sweet tooth without all of the added sugars!

    1. Yay!! I’m so glad you’re loving these stuffed dates, Claire. Thanks for coming back to leave a comment and star rating, I so appreciate it!

  4. Well, these are certainly delicious, but please do not consider them a health food, or even a healthy alternative to a snickers bar.

The body does not differentiate between ‘natural’ and refined sugars when digesting them – sugar is sugar and it all ends up as glucose in the end. Indeed, dates give you a bit of a head start in this respect, consisting primarily of glucose and fructose which are simple monosaccharide carbohydrates, readily available to the body (dry weight dates are 80% sugar with a roughly 50/50 split between fructose and glucose). For context, the Glycemic Index for dates is 62; pure table sugar is 63. Notwithstanding all the additional sugar in the chocolate coating.

Let’s take a look at the Snickers comparison. The nutritional info above is given for a single date making like for like comparisons difficult, however a medjool date weighs approx. 24g, a snickers 57g. The date includes the stone, which is then removed and replaced with peanut butter and covered in chocolate. Let’s assume that you would get approximately 2 finished date candies to each snickers bar, weight for weight (visually, this looks like an equivalent serving size too). You could of course only eat 1 date, but you could also only eat half a snickers, you will just feel less satiated.

To return to the comparison, each snickers bar comprises 271 calories, 28.8g sugar and 13.6g fat. If you were to consume 2 of these date candies, you would (according to the nutritional data provided) ingest 42g sugar, 12g fat and 294 calories. So you’re taking on quite a lot more sugar, slightly less fat and a slightly more calories with 2 date candies than you are a snickers bar.

Now I’m not preaching, I love these and will eat them again. But not because it’s a healthier snacking option, because they’re delicious. It’s misleading to promote such foodstuffs as ‘healthier’ alternatives to other snacks, and may ultimately encourage increased intake of sugar and calories in the false belief that they’re somehow better for you than something like a Snickers. There is nothing healthy about this recipe.

    1. Hey Gareth – I know these might not seem “healthier” than Snickers when you look at the calories / sugar content, but in this recipe we’re using healthier, all-natural ingredients and only 5 of them. A regular Snickers bar contains artificial flavors, corn syrup, white sugar, palm oil and other ingredients that aren’t the greatest.

And yes, dates do contain natural sugar, but they have a low/medium glycemic index score because they also contain a good amount of fiber, which slows the release of the carbohydrates and gives you sustained energy rather spiking your blood sugar crazy high. They’re also low in fat and packed with nutrients like potassium (50% more potassium by weight than a banana), copper, magnesium, vitamin B6, niacin, calcium, iron and vitamin K.

I was looking for some date recipes as I’m 37 wks pregnant and wanted to get some of the benefits from dates as I get closer to delivery. And these little bites of deliciousness are sooooo good! They were simple to make and are the perfect little snack/dessert. Hardest part is trying not to eat a bunch at once! Would definitely recommend!

    1. Ahh yay!! I’m so glad you enjoyed these, Erika. I basically lived on these during my pregnancy. 🙂

  6. 5 stars
These are SO GOOD! My family really liked these. I can always use more high-energy snack ideas now that my teen is home all the time because of the pandemic. I absolutely love these. Yes, they have some added sugar from the chocolate but (unlike Snickers) these can be made in a way that avoids ultra-processed foods. A+

    1. So glad these stuffed dates are a hit, Summer!! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment + star rating. The reviews are super helpful for other readers, so I appreciate it. <3

I’m not going to lie, I kind of side-eyed the recipe description when it was claimed these taste as good as a Snickers bar. I never should have been so skeptical! Dates and peanut butter and chocolate are a match made in heaven. Warning: very easy to eat too many! They are high in calories so just be mindful of your portions, and it’s quite a tasty treat.

    1. So glad you enjoyed these, Kenna!! Thanks for giving them a chance and for coming back to leave a comment + star rating. The reviews are super helpful to other readers, so I appreciate it. 🙂

Just when I think I have a favorite recipe of Brittany‘s, I find another one that tops it. THIS is my favorite dessert so far. If you have ever tried those frozen Snicker icecream bars from the store… these taste the same and are so much healthier!

Thank you, Brittany. I appreciate your hard work and effort into these recipes. Thanks to you, eating desserts is a possible staple in my house because of the healthy spin you put on them.

    1. Ahh, that makes me so happy to hear!! I’m so glad this recipe was a hit. Thanks for making it + for coming back to leave a comment + star rating, Stephanie. I so appreciate it. <3

Absolutely incredible. I had no idea dates could be so delicious. I didn’t have any peanuts on hand, so I simply omitted them. They were fabulous! I rarely eat sweets, so I’m glad that when I chose to have something, it was these. I can’t wait to make these for my extended family during our next gathering. My toddlers and husband loved them as well. I highly recommend these 🙂 Thank you!

Dates alone are better than any candy in my opinion. I usually eat them with almond butter but this peanut butter chocolate combo is amazing! I’m going to bring these to a Halloween party for anyone who wants a healthier alternative to all the candy.

    1. Woo!! Happy to hear you loved these snickers stuffed dates, Molly! Thanks for trying them out and coming back to leave a review. I really appreciate it!

    1. The coconut oil helps to melt the chocolate making it easier for dipping. Coconut oil also hardens in the fridge/freezer which makes a harder chocolate coating. You could just skip the coconut oil, but your chocolate might not be as drippy.

  30. 5 stars
These are amazing!!! I cannot believe how much they taste like a snickers bar. So hard to not eat them all in one sitting! These will become a regular sweet found in my fridge from now on!

Some of my favorite combos: Dates and peanut butter, and chocolate and peanut butter, so I knew I’d love this recipe since it would combine all three! So easy to make, and the recommendation to use a tooth pick to dip the dates in the chocolate was a huge help (I always struggle dipping things nicely)! I used the medjool dates from trader joes and they were delish. Thanks for the idea and tips!

    1. Woo!! Happy to hear these stuffed dates were a success. Thanks for the review and trying them out, Natalie. I so appreciate it!

PB stuffed dates are an all-time favorite for me, and it’s been too long since i’ve dipped them in chocolate ! i didn’t have peanuts on hand so i used crunchy peanut butter and they were absolutely delicious !! i love how informative and easy the EBF recipes are to follow and i’m obsessed with all the mouth-watering pictures. these mini snickers are one of those golden snacks i hide from my husband and do NOT share …😈✌🏼

This recipe is so easy and so delicious! Peanut butter is my favorite for snacking on everything from toast to rice cakes to celery. I love this sweet and salty treat that’s a healthy alternative. The problem is trying not to keep visiting the fridge for just one more 🙂

I made these with small, pitted dates, so didn’t sprinkle the peanuts inside due to size. These were so good—I used two forks to dip into chocolate and then placed on a silicone mat in the fridge. Yummy!

WOW!! These are incredible – I used almond butter (it’s what I had) and toasted pecans for filling with some sea salt to top it off. Incredible!! So tasty and filling compared to a Snickers!

Loved them! Slightly-moderately healthier (there is melted chocolate after all!) alternative to Snickers, and all the more tastier knowing how many more whole food ingredients went into it!

Absolutely delicious! My husband is a diabetic and can enjoy 1 guilt free. I am a chocoholic that has been trying to cut back on refined sugar so these are perfect. They satisfy my craving and actually leave me feeling full after just 1. I do use Lilly’s sugar free milk chocolate chips to coat the date. Thank you for the recipe:-)

These are incredible! So good and so easy. I will definitely make these again. Next time, I think I am going to try hazelnut butter and a hazelnut inside and see if it will be like a play on a Forrero Roche. I love that this recipe uses only whole food ingredients and none of the weird ones you find in a conventional snickers! I love this recipe. Next one I want to try is the date caramel!

    1. WOO! I love that this recipe was a hit, Jackie! The hazelnut butter is a great idea, I would love to hear how that works out for you. Thank you for your review + star rating, I really appreciate it!

I am trying to cut down on refined sugars, my sweet tooth is out of control and this recipe is AMAZING. I used crunchy peanut butter to add the crunch and I used Hu dark chocolate gems (the best unrefined sugar chocolate that is stevia free) and WOW. I am shocked that this satisfies my sweet tooth the way it does! 10/10

Thank you for sharing this recipe!

I purchased medjool dates after reading about all the health benefits, but I had a hard time enjoying them plain. This recipe is delicious and helps satisfy my occasional chocolate craving while getting in some good nutrients (and without all the added sugar/processed junk of factory-made candy bars.)

I’m definitely a huge fan and will be making these again.

    God bless you!

    1. Ahh this is the best, Lindsey! I am so glad you found this recipe and are loving them. Thank you for coming back and sharing your review + star rating, I really appreciate it!

For the record, I don’t like dates. I’ve tried over and over. I know they’re healthy… but I can’t do it. On to my experience with this recipe, I had some dates to use up as I decided to get rid of them and be done. So I tried these. How on earth are they so delicious?!?! Even my ridiculously picky daughter inhaled them and is constantly begging me to make them. Thank you for converting me, I now respect dates 😉

    1. Ah yay! This is seriously the best, Jen! I am so glad you and your daughter are loving this sweet treat and you are hooked. Thank you for coming back and sharing your review + star rating, it means so much to me!

  75. Hi! These are delicious but my dates are super hard once they’re in the fridge and literally hurt to chew. Did I miss something…? Used fresh medjool dates from Costco. When I let come to room temp the chocolate melts

    1. Hi Rebecca – If your dates were hard prior to filling the, I would recommend soaking them in warm water until they are softened before filling. After they are filled, if you find they are too hard, I would recommend letting sit out on the counter for a bit before eating. Hope this helps!

    1. Oh yay! So glad you enjoyed this recipe, Cecilia. Thanks for making it and for coming back to leave a review. I so appreciate it!

    1. Totally! You’ll just want to leave them out for a few minutes before eating to help them soften a little! Enjoy!

    1. YAY! I am SO glad these are a hit for you, TKA. Thank you for coming back and sharing your review & star rating, it means so much to me!
