There’s nothing better than a classic strawberry banana smoothie! This one has Greek yogurt for an added protein boost.
I love smoothies, but it seems like every time I try to just throw ingredients in the blender, I’m left with a subpar smoothie with an off color. Can you relate?
That’s why it’s key to have a few tried and true basic smoothie recipes that always taste yummy – go-to recipes that you can build off of if you’re feeling creative.
This strawberry banana smoothie recipe is a great example. The combo of strawberry and banana is such a classic and tastes so delicious on it’s own, but there’s definitely room to experiment and make it your own if you want!

Ingredients Needed to Make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie
It doesn’t get much easier than this! You only need a few simple ingredients:
- frozen banana – frozen banana is the key to making smoothies with a creamy, thick texture. Just be sure to freeze your banana (unpeeled) before you want to make this smoothie.
- strawberries – I like to use fresh strawberries when they’re in season because I feel like they’re sweeter, but frozen strawberries work too and will make the smoothie extra thick.
- milk – I like to use unsweetened almond milk, but any milk will do.
- yogurt – adding a little yogurt boosts the protein and makes this smoothie more filling. I like using Greek yogurt in mine.
- honey – this is optional, but it does help balance out the tart yogurt flavor.

Notes & Substitutions
Honey – If you’re looking to keep the sugar content down I would skip this ingredient.
Dairy-free – You can use non-dairy yogurt to make this smoothie dairy-free.
Protein powder – Feel free to add in protein powder to amp up the protein if you are enjoying this for breakfast or as a post-workout snack.
Mix-ins – This is a great recipe to build off of so if you’re feeling creative go ahead and experiment with other ingredients!

How Much Sugar is in a Strawberry Banana Smoothie?
Because strawberry banana smoothies are mostly fruit, they do tend to have a good amount of sugar. This homemade strawberry banana smoothie has 19 grams of sugar (without the honey).
This is natural sugar (coming from the fruit and yogurt) and 19 grams is way less than most smoothies you can order at a smoothie shop. For instance, the Starbucks Strawberry Banana Smoothie has 58 grams of sugar!
The daily sugar intake recommendation for an average adult is about 25 grams of sugar day, even if it’s coming from natural sources. Just something to be aware of!

Benefits of Greek Yogurt
I love Greek yogurt for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it is an excellent source of protein and I usually buy full fat Greek yogurt (as opposed to low-fat or fat-free) to get all those healthy fats as well.
Pro tip: low-fat and fat-free products typically swap fat for sugar to make sure it still tastes good! I’ll take fat over sugar any day. It’s also loaded with probiotics (aka good bacteria) which is important for a healthy gut and immune system!

This smoothie was yummy!!!
Love this combo! So fast and simple to have a great drink to enjoy 🙂
The first time I made this recipe I added 🍯 honey. 5 stars! It was delicious! The second time I made it with out honey and it wasn’t bad at all, honey gave it the sweet taste. But since I’m sticking to watching my sugar I will continue to go without it. I did however only had regular yogurt at home, I will use greek yogurt next time and see how the taste might be different. But overall, love it!
Yay!! So glad you loved this smoothie, Nanci. 🙂
This one is so good! And that bit of honey takes it over the top!

Make this delicious smoothie 5 times a week for myself and my toddler! We can’t get enough!🥰
I am enjoying making a smoothie every day. My kids said this was the best but I preferred other ones better. However anytime I can get fruit or vegetable in my kids— I consider it a win!

The perfect warm weather smoothie! I added some spinach and flaxseed, and it still tastes amazing – even my kids are asking for more, which is always a win!

Ah yay! I’m so pumped you’ve been enjoying this smoothie, Amy! Thanks for the review. I really appreciate it!
I loved this smoothie. I love that it wasn’t too sweet but so flavorful. I left out the honey and added a little spinach to get my greens in. Love that the flavor was so strong I didn’t taste the greens but didn’t feel like I had too much sugar to start my day
This is one of my kid’s favorite recipes, so I make it often. Sometimes I add spinach, but that makes it an ugly color.
Yay! I’m so glad they’ve been enjoying this smoothie. Thanks so much for the review, Joy! I really appreciate it 🙂
What a super thick & creamy delicious treat this morning! I used frozen strawberries instead of fresh & WOW hello “milkshake”. Love adding yogurt for extra creaminess & protein. Very happy way to start the day. Thank you so much, Brittany!
So good and creamy like a milkshake! It’s like having dessert for breakfast but it’s healthy… I’m all about it!

is the greek yogurt optional?
Hi, Amani. You can definitely omit the greek yogurt but your smoothie might not come out as thick and creamy.
