This oatmeal smoothie tastes just like a cinnamon oatmeal cookie. It’s healthy, packed with over 20 grams of protein and makes for a great breakfast or post-workout snack!
Love having oatmeal for breakfast, but want to switch things up? You’re in luck because today I’m sharing a recipe for an oatmeal smoothie that tastes just like you’re eating an old fashioned cinnamon oatmeal cookie but in smoothie form.
Why You’ll Love This Smoothie
- It comes together in no time at all… just add everything to your blender and blend away! Perfect for those busy mornings.
- It’s made with just six simple ingredients that I bet you already have in your kitchen right now!
- It’s packed with over 20 grams of protein making it a great breakfast option or post-workout snack.
Adding Oats to Smoothies
Yes, adding oats (or ever leftover cooked oats) is a thing! Adding rolled oats to your smoothie is perfectly safe and gives the smoothie a thick and creamy texture. The oats also add a bit of extra nutrition, including fiber, which will help make your smoothie more satisfying and filling.
As for what type of oats to use for smoothies, I recommend old fashioned rolled oats or quick oats. Both of these options are pre-cooked and will blend up just fine in your blender. I don’t recommend steel cut oats as they are the least processed and will be harder to blend and more difficult to digest.
Ingredients Needed:
- frozen banana – frozen banana helps to thicken this smoothie and adds a little sweetness. Be sure to check out my guide for how to freeze bananas.
- unsweetened almond milk or oat milk – any milk will work, but I prefer almond milk or oat milk. If you want extra oat flavor and more creaminess, go for the oat milk!
- old fashioned oats – you can’t have an oatmeal smoothie without oats! Be sure to grab gluten free oats if need be. My fave brand is Bob’s Red Mill gluten free old fashioned rolled oats.
- vanilla protein powder – I love adding protein powder to my smoothies to make them more filling! I think the vanilla flavor blends really well with this particular smoothie. I like using Nuzest‘s smooth vanilla protein powder. You can use my code eatingbirdfood for 15% off your order.
- cinnamon – for a bit of sweet spice and oatmeal cookie flavor!
- pure vanilla extract – a great flavor enhancer!
How to Make
Place your banana, milk, oats, protein powder, cinnamon, and vanilla in a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Add a little more milk if it’s too thick until you reach your desired consistency.
Pour into a glass or bowl (depending on whether you want to use a spoon or straw) and top with your favorite smoothie toppings.
How to Make a Smoothie Without Banana
The banana in this recipe gives the smoothie a thick and creamy texture and also adds a bit of sweetness, without being too overpowering. If you’re looking for a low-sugar option, are allergic to bananas or simply don’t like them, here are some ideas for replacements:
- ice – replace the frozen banana with ice (about 1 cup). It will give the shake volume and add a nice, frozen slushy texture.
- frozen milk ice cubes – this is the same concept, but instead of using regular ice cubes, make frozen cubes using your favorite non-dairy milk (like almond or coconut) and use about 1 cup of these cubes instead of the frozen banana.
- frozen cauliflower rice – I use frozen cauliflower rice in my shakes all the time and it works as a low-sugar replacement for frozen banana. I do find that it adds a different texture to shakes, especially if you use a large amount. I’d start with 1/4 cup, give the shake a taste and then add more if needed.
- frozen zucchini – like frozen cauliflower, frozen zucchini works great as a low-sugar replacement for frozen banana. It also doesn’t add a ton of flavor! You can blanch or steam your zucchini before freezing if you want to make it easier to digest, but I don’t find this necessary.
Pro tip! The banana does add sweetness to this recipe, so if you're not replacing it with another frozen fruit you might want to add a touch of sweetness in the form of maple syrup, agave, honey or stevia.

yum! I will for sure be trying this 😀
You probably already read Young House Love since it’s so popular and they live in Richmond, but that couple did their wedding on the cheap with lots of DIY so if you’re looking for some tips, look at their blog!!
Yes, I LOVE YHL and I just recently went back to their wedding post and re-read it for ideas.
Congrats on the engagement!
To save money I would say consider everything as negotiable. That includes prices for venues and venders, but most of all the catoring, we ended up getting our catoring cut in half (we did a self-stock bar which helped).
Also, consider eliminating anything you don’t absolutely love. i.e. we had no bridal party at all, no flowers (we were also trying to be more “green”), and no favors (because I don’t feel like you ever get anything worth while…) You might eliminate different things – but don’t pay for anything you don’t consider essential to YOUR wedding (and ignore protocal – who cares what anyone else thinks you should do).
I saw contrasting comments about wedding planners – a professional wedding planner CAN save you money because of their hook-ups with venders, ours definitely saved us more than the $1500 we paid her. But if you go small you can prolly get by with a very organized friend helping out. Just make sure that you have a go to person the day of who will handle anything that comes up so you can focus on looking beautiful and smiling a lot 🙂
Good luck with everything!
Yes – good point about having a go-to person. I asked one of my friends to manage anything that came up behind the scenes and gave her cell number to all of the vendors.
I actually didn’t know that wedding planners could get you vendor discounts! I still don’t think we would have used one, but definitely good to know.
I love your idea to only pay for the things you think are essential. It’s so true that no really remembers or saves their favors for the most part. How did you find a caterer that allowed you to stock your own bar? Is that common?
We did not actually have a choice in our caterer because our venue would only work with one caterer. So the self-stock bar was part of the negotiations. They staffed the bar (for a very reasonable price – like $20/hr) and provided sodas, we provided the other drinks we wanted served. There is a lot of room for negotiation – which I never would have attempted on my own, but my hubby and wedding planner were hard core 🙂
I had a friend who did a charitable donation for her “wedding favors” – the guests got a card with info on the charity. We did something similar… At least you know it is money well spent 🙂
This sounds delicious! I love the hearty texture that oats add to a smoothie. Yum!
Congrats! After reading your post I understand totally how you feel! After seeing the average price in RI was $25,000 I had felt extremely defeated. We had to pay for the whole thing ourselves; there was no way we could afford that! Let’s just say it is possible to cut that in half if you are willing to make some changes. First, we decided to have the wedding at a restaurant. Rental fee was only $1,000 included the tables, chairs, and linens. It was a beautiful location with a great view of the water so we couldn’t complain! We also decided to make it a daytime wedding for two reasons. One of course was to enjoy the view, but two we didn’t get a DJ. We used the music piped into the restaurant to save money. Another easy way to save is to keep your wedding party tiny. We only had a bm and moh plus a ring bearer and flower girl. Cuts back on flower costs, gifts, etc. I also suggest booking things in advance. We were able to save $1,200 on our photographer for booking more then a year out. I wish you the best of luck!
Thank you for sharing your story and all the tips Nicole. It’s awesome that you all were able to save so much money! I really hope we can do the same thing. 🙂

I need more Hot Yoga in my life – my arms are totally getting flabby! I noticed the other day that they’d lost definition! This post came at just the right time!
ohhhhh my lord, hot yoga…. I literally just can’t stay away. lately, I have been majorly digging the smoothies. I would say they’re more energizing than coffee…. but I would be lying.
I know!!! I am totally feeling it today, but I’m pretty sure I lost 2 lbs of sweat in hot yoga!! And yeah smoothies are energizing but coffee is ennnnerrrrrgizzzing!
Just made the smoothie (added chia seeds)! I pulled out my blender this morning which has been hibernating since summer and than saw your post & made sure to pick up ginger ( I had everything else on hand – never happens for a recipe!). It’s delicious & easy! Perfect for this sweet-tooth diabetic. I’ll be stocking up on bananas.
And your engagement story & Isaac sharing it from his perspective was so sweet, congratulations.
You’re quick!! So glad you liked the smoothie. 🙂
