This chocolate blueberry smoothie is packed with blueberries and cacao powder, frozen banana and leafy greens. It’s vegan, easy to make and can be prepped in advance!

If you’re a fan of Daily Harvest’s smoothie cups you’re going to love this chocolate blueberry smoothie, which was inspired by their blueberry + cacao smoothie.
When it comes to smoothie flavors, you really can’t go wrong with the chocolate and blueberry combo. It tastes like a handful of chocolate covered blueberries.
Why You Gotta Try This One

You won’t find this at your average smoothie shop. It’s got that deep, cocoa richness paired with the tart brightness of blueberries, and it actually keeps you full. It’s indulgent without being heavy and tastes way more exciting than your usual frozen fruit-and-spinach combo. Plus, cacao is a powerhouse of antioxidants and the berries bring a burst of refreshing nutrients to the mix—so it’s just as nourishing as it is delicious.
Ingredients Needed

- unsweetened almond milk – the liquid base for this smoothie. Almond milk is my favorite dairy-free milk to use, but coconut milk, or any other non-dairy milk will work great.
- frozen blueberries – often labeled a superfood, blueberries are low in calories, high in nutrients and incredibly good for you. They are among the most nutrient-dense berries. They’re high in antioxidants as well as fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Manganese. Both regular blueberries and wild blueberries work great.
- frozen banana – a good source of potassium and what makes this smoothie nice and creamy. Here’s my full guide on how to freeze bananas.
- medjool date – adds some natural sweetness and a subtle caramel-like flavor.
- kale & spinach – these leafy greens are packed with nutrients and are a great way to sneak some veggies into your diet.
- almond butter – adds protein, healthy fats and a nice nutty flavor to this smoothie.
- cacao powder – what gives this smoothie a delicious chocolatey flavor and is also rich in antioxidants.
- sea salt – a pinch helps to balance out the sweetness and enhance the overall flavor of the smoothie.
Make it Your Own
This smoothie is already packed with good stuff, but here are a few simple ways to tweak it:
- Add protein: A scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder makes this smoothie more filling and turns it into a solid meal or post-workout option.
- Swap the nut butter: Try peanut or cashew butter for a different flavor. Sunflower seed butter works great for a nut-free version.
- Boost the nutrients: Add a spoonful of chia seeds, flaxseed, or hemp hearts for extra fiber, omega-3s, and staying power.
How to Make

This chocolate blueberry smoothie recipe comes together so quickly.
Just add all of the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Top with fresh blueberries & enjoy.
Tips for the Best Smoothie
A few quick pointers to help you get the most out of this chocolate blueberry blend:
- Don’t skip the sweetener: Cacao has a rich, slightly bitter flavor that really needs balance. The banana and blueberries help, but a date (or a drizzle of maple syrup or honey) rounds everything out. If you skip the sweetener, just know it’ll be a lot more intense.
- Use frozen fruit: This is what gives your smoothie that perfect thick, frosty texture without needing ice.
- Blend in stages: If your blender has trouble with thicker smoothies, blend the liquid and greens first, then add the rest. It makes everything smoother, literally.
- Clean your blender quickly: As soon as you’re done blending, rinse your blender immediately. Smoothie ingredients can stick to the sides and harden, which is tougher to clean once it’s set. A quick rinse as soon as you’re done blending will save you some scrubbing later.

Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen blueberries
- ½ frozen banana
- 1 pitted Medjool date, chopped
- ¼ cup chopped kale
- ¼ cup chopped spinach
- 1 Tablespoon almond butter
- ½ Tablespoon cacao powder
- Pinch of flaky sea salt
- ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk
- Toppings: fresh blueberries, cacao nibs, drizzle of almond butter
Instructions
Smoothie Cups
- Place all of the smoothie ingredients into a freezer-safe, airtight container. (I used a mason jar, but you could use Stasher bags or freezer bags.)
- When ready to enjoy, fill the mason jar with milk (or add milk to your blender) and dump the ingredients into your blender.
- Blend until smooth, adding additional milk if needed. If you have trouble removing the contents from the jar after freezing, run a utensil around the edge to release everything
- Pour into glass, top with fresh blueberries and enjoy!
Enjoy Right Away
- Put all of the ingredients into a blender and blend well. Top with additional blueberries & enjoy. PS: I recommend using frozen blueberries and banana if you’re making it to enjoy right away.
Notes
- Sweetness level: This smoothie has a deep, rich cocoa flavor thanks to the cacao powder. If you skip the medjool date, it might taste a bit too intense or bitter, especially if your banana isn’t super ripe. Feel free to add a touch of maple syrup or your favorite sweetener to balance things out.
- Protein boost: You can easily add a scoop of protein powder to make this smoothie more filling. I like using a chocolate or vanilla plant-based protein, but use what you love.
- Vegan-friendly: This smoothie is naturally vegan as long as your protein powder or sweetener doesn’t contain dairy or honey.
- No high-speed blender? If your blender struggles with frozen fruit, let the banana or blueberries thaw for 5–10 minutes before blending to help things along.
