Here’s how to make perfect overnight oats with an easy base recipe, proper ratio, and fun flavor variations. They’re such an easy grab-and-go breakfast and perfect for meal prep.

Overnight oats have held a special place in my heart since I discovered them in 2009 and you can tell I’m obsessed just by looking at how many different overnight oat recipes I have posted over the years.

They’re such an easy and tasty breakfast that you can meal prep for the week. And the prep is so fast as it only takes about 5 minutes to mix your oats together! I’ve experimented with so many flavors, but in this post I’m sharing my basic overnight oats recipe (plus a few fun variations) and answering all your overnight oats questions.

Four glass jars of overnight oats topped with fresh berries.

What are Overnight Oats?

Overnight oats are an easy, make-ahead breakfast that combines rolled oats with some sort of liquid, usually milk (it can be dairy based or non-dairy like almond milk, oat milk or coconut milk). They’re usually sweetened and additional flavors are typically added as well.

// ★★★★★ REVIEW //

My go-to overnight oats recipe! I usually use either cows milk or oat milk (whichever I have on hand) and honey to sweeten. I eat these plain 99% of the time and they are delicious. I don’t have an appetite in the morning but try to eat breakfast to avoid overeating later. These are the perfect, light breakfast. And I love that I can prep them ahead of time.” – Samantha

Ingredients measured out to make overnight oats: almond milk, Greek yogurt, maple syrup, oats, sea salt, vanilla and chia seeds.

Ingredients Needed

Rolled oats and milk are really all you need, but I love adding a little yogurt, chia seeds and maple syrup to my base recipe. The oats turn out super creamy and the perfect consistency.

  • rolled oats – old-fashioned rolled oats are a must for overnight oats. They soak up the liquid, which gives you a lovely creamy texture. Instant, quick-cooking and steel cut oats don’t work because they don’t absorb the liquid in the same way that rolled oats do.
  • milk – you can make overnight oats with any type of milk you prefer. I personally like non-dairy options and usually use unsweetened almond milk for my overnight oats.
  • yogurt  this gives the oats a extra creamy texture while adding a bit of protein. I personally like using plain Greek yogurt since it’s the highest in protein and lowest in sugar. To make vegan or dairy-free overnight oats you can use a non-dairy yogurt (I like Siggi’s plant-based or Culina) or skip the yogurt all together and use additional milk.
  • chia seeds  while these are optional, I love adding chia seeds to my overnight oats because they add a bit of fiber and protein. Plus they help absorb some of the liquid which gives the oats a thicker consistency.
  • Add-ins + toppings  Here’s where you can get creative. Just like with regular stove top oats, there are some classic add-ins like vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, maple syrup (or honey) and a pinch of sea salt that really elevate the flavor and make overnight oats super tasty.

Base Recipe (The Perfect Ratio)

The base “recipe” for overnight oats is so simple! I recommend a 1:1 ratio of rolled oats to milk, plus half as much yogurt. So for 1/2 cup of oats, I use 1/2 cup of milk + 1/4 cup of yogurt (or an additional 1/4 cup of milk). These proportions seem to give the oats the perfect consistency, not too thick, but not soupy.

How to Make Overnight Oats

Add oats, milk, yogurt, maple syrup, chia seeds, vanilla and sea salt into a jar, storage container with a lid or a bowl. Stir ingredients together. Place in the fridge overnight. If you’re in a rush you can shorten the soak time to 2-4 hours.

The next morning (or when ready to eat), remove lid and give oats a big stir. Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy. You can eat the oats straight from the jar or pour into a bowl for serving.

Overnight Oat Variations

Like I said, you can mix in different ingredients or add toppings to really take your overnight oats to the next level. Here I’m sharing three fun variations:

Peanut butter

I love peanut butter so this is probably my favorite flavor to make. Just mix a little peanut butter into the overnight oats as you make them and then top with another drizzle of peanut butter. I also like adding some chopped peanuts and blueberries.

A glass jar with overnight oats that are topped with fresh blueberries.

Berry

For a berry version, I love adding fresh berries and a little jam. You can do whatever berries you enjoy most and whatever flavor of jam you have on hand. I love using my strawberry chia jam.

Chocolate chip

Having a little chocolate with breakfast always feels like a treat and this version is super easy. Just mix a few chocolate chips into the mixture and add a few on top when you’re ready to serve it up. I also like adding a drizzle of nut butter and some banana slices.

Make Overnight Oats More Fun with Add-Ins & Toppings

I love the flavors I shared above, but the flavor options for overnight oats are practically endless. Here are some additional ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Fruit – you can’t go wrong with bananas and berries, but almost any fruit will work. I even have a tropical overnight oats recipe with pineapple, mango and toasted coconut.
  • Nut butter – I use peanut butter and almond butter most often, but any and all nut/seed butters will taste amazing drizzled on your overnight oats.
  • Nuts and seeds – this goes right along with the nut butter. You can use nuts too! Almonds, peanuts, pecans, walnuts, sunflower seeds, coconut, hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds… you’re options here are endless.
  • Granola – I’m a granola girl and love adding crunchy granola on my overnight oats for a little texture. I highly recommend my homemade granola recipe.
  • Protein feel free to add additional Greek yogurt, cottage cheese or protein powder to bump up the protein of your oats. Also see my protein overnight oats if you want a specific recipe.
  • Chocolate I’m all about sneaking a little chocolate into my breakfast. Feel free to use chocolate chips or even a chopped chocolate bar. If you love chocolate, try my brownie batter overnight oats.

How to Store

Store your overnight oats in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. They will soften more the longer they sit so I find they’re best on days 1-3, but they’re still safe to eat on days 4 and 5. With this said, overnight oats are great for meal prep and you can make them on Sunday for the work-week.

What Jars to Use

In terms of what type of container to store your overnight oats in, there are a lot of options. I personally like wide mouth 16 oz Mason jars because they’re relatively inexpensive and they offer plenty of space for stirring everything together and for adding toppings.

I’ve also found that these Le Parfait Jam Pots (photographed here) and 9.8 oz Weck jars are perfect for a single batch of overnight oats. They’re durable glass and practical for other uses in the kitchen too.

Of course, regular meal prep containers work great or you can get jars made specifically for overnight oats like these cute jars with colored screw tops.

Overnight Oats In a Jar

I also love making my overnight oats in an almost empty jar of peanut butter. You just add all your ingredients right to the jar, combine, let soak and then enjoy straight from the jar. It’s the perfect way to use up every last bit of the peanut butter in your jar.

FAQ

How long do the oats need to soak?

Given the name, you’d assume overnight oats need to soak overnight, but you can actually get by with only letting them soak 2 hours or so. While it does take some time for the oats to absorb the liquid, they don’t necessarily have to be soaked overnight.

Can I use steel cut oats?

I don’t recommend using steel cut oats unless you follow a specific recipe. See my steel cut overnight oats.

Can I use quick oats?

I don’t recommend using quick oats as they won’t absorb as much of the milk and will be liquidy as a result.

Can you warm them up?

Short answer, yes! You can definitely warm up overnight oats, but the whole point of overnight oats is to eat them cold like muesli. Even if you think cold oats sound strange, I recommend giving it shot before you write them off. Of course, if you simply can’t do the cold oats you can always heat them up. Just pop the soaked oats in your microwave, cooking in 30 second increments until the oats are warm throughout.

Can I make overnight oats with water?

While you can use water instead of milk, I don’t recommend it. It will be virtually flavorless and lack creaminess, similar to eating cereal with water.

Why did my overnight oats turn out so thick?

You likely didn’t follow the proper ratio or perhaps you added an additional ingredient (like protein powder) which soaks up a lot of the liquid. If this happens you can always add a splash of milk to loosen the oats.

  1. I wish I didn’t have to click out of feedly now to read your posts. It makes me much less likely to read your content.

  2. Obsessed with overnight oats for easy yet delicious meal prep! Can’t wait to try these summer flavors 🙂

  3. Have you tried this with steel-cut oats? I don’t know if it would work–I’m not any kind of cook, so I have no idea.

    1. Vanilla you find in the baking section of the grocery store. It’s a Flavoring. Also known as Vanilla Extract. Hope this helps.

    1. The peach pie is delicious and perfect right now while peaches are seasonal, ripe and juicy. Can’t wait to hear what you think of it.

  4. How many days in advance could you make these? I.e could I make 5 sets on a Sunday night ready for each morning?

    1. Can you sub the almond milk for regular 1%, sour cream or regular yogurt for the greek and flax seed for chia? I’m interested in trying the strawberry one first. I have heard good things about chia seeds though, but right now we have flax so I’d be interested in learning how they differ in their health benefits.

      1. You can totally use these swaps and I think they will work just fine, but I think sour cream is going taste a little more sour than yogurt so you might need to add more sweetness. Let me know if you try it!

I’ve been making overnight oats for about two years now and wanted to try some different combinations. I absolutely loved your strawberry shortcake, the almond extract really pops the flavor! I have always been wary of using peaches but I did try your peach recipe and we really enjoyed it so I will make it again sometime. I haven’t had a chance to make the cherry yet. I also made the blueberry but cheated and used granola since I already had that and didn’t have the ingredients to make the crumble topping. I’m happy to have found new flavors to add into our oat rotation.

  6. Can you email me the nutrition facts please. My husband is on dialysis and needs a strict diet and I love your recipes.

I made the basic recipe of the overnight oats and they turned out amazing!! I made them and ate them the same day after letting them sit in the fridge for about 4 hours, the oats turned so soft and can’t get over how creamy they tasted! I topped mine with sliced banana, peanut butter and a little jelly. I will be making again ASAP, thank you Brittany for this easy delicious recipe 😊

THE most important recipe of my life as a new mom. Ive made a few containers of this every week for the past year and it’s the only way I’m eating breakfast while taking chasing around my newly-mobile baby! It would be such a cute gift to a new mom to make a gift basket with mason jars and the ingredients to make this with a printed out recipe card.

I love overnight oats but recently I’ve become addicted to having them for lunch. I make them in the morning and then take them to work ready for lunchtime. At home I love them with cacao powder, pb and banana. For work they need to be but free so I tend to add a scoop of protein powder in. So simple and so many variations I can never get bored. Thank you for all the great suggestions.

    1. I’m so glad you’re enjoying these overnight oats, Fiona! Thanks so much for the review. I really appreciate it!

I made the overnight protein oats as my first attempt, and it’s a recipe I plan to continue using! I liked how easy it was to make non-dairy, as many recipes utilize yogurt. Thank you for all of the great ideas and tips for customization!

    1. Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed this overnight oats recipe, Windee! Thanks for the review 🙂

I want to try them all! The strawberries and cream was delicious! I love almond extract but it was a bit powerful for me. Maybe because it sat over two nights before I ate it? Regardless I’d probably cut the almond extract in half next time, but it was still delicious and I will definitely be making it again.

I tried the chocolate chip overnight oats. Very good, but not my favorite out of all the ones of yours I’ve tried. I like having a variety though so I’m sure I will be making that recipe again. Just not as often as some others. I like that you have some without protein powder. I use protein powder but sometimes it’s nice to have a break from it.

I will be honest … I was a skeptic of overnight oats cold. I tried them once before and was not thrilled. When I saw the peanut butter cup overnight oats recipe I had to try them again. I am so glad that I did. They are delicious. I think the key is adding protein powder. I am excited to try the other variations out.

I’ve always been a fan of hot oats, whether they be rolled, steel cut, blended or baked, but for some reason was skeptical of overnight oats. After looking through the different flavor options on the site, I decided they looked to good not to try, and I wasn’t wrong! All the different varieties are amazing and I’ve been convinced that cold oats can be good too! These will be my new summer go to!

I cannot wait to try out some of the other varieties too.

My daughter saw that I had been looking at the overnight oats recipes and wanted to try the Brownie Batter one. As she is 8, I wasn’t sure if she could have protein powder. So, in her half I omitted that, reduced the almond milk to 1/2 cup & added 1/4 cup of greek yoghurt. The other ingredients I kept the same, apart from adding 1/2 tbsp more of maple syrup. (The cocoa powder I used was quite bitter, so after tasting the mixture, I thought it needed to be a sweeter). The oats were a huge hit, she loved them and said they tasted just like brownie batter!!! She only had half of her half, so can’t wait to eat the rest for breakfast tomorrow!!

In my half, I followed the ingredients, using chocolate protein powder. It was good, but a bit too chocolatety for me. Again, I think its the cocoa powder I used. Next time I will try it with the vanilla protein powder, and/or use different cocoa powder.

    1. I’m so glad this recipe was a hit, Janine! Thanks so much for the review. I really appreciate!!

Today I tried Chocolate Chip overnight oats. After trying most of the other EBF recipes, I fancied something a bit plainer. This was delicious. I added half a mashed banana, which didn’t a lot of extra taste, but that was enough. There really is an overnight oats recipe for everyone!

I’d just like to ask if I can use: Quaker (blue packaging) Oats called quick cook Oatmeal as this is what I have and what I can find in the supermarket. https://www.google.com.sg/search?q=quaker+oats&client=safari&hl=en-sg&prmd=insxv&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjzroX76OXzAhVZWH0KHUhdCuAQ_AUoAXoECAMQAQ&biw=375&bih=622&dpr=2#imgrc=MfcFTYRf-URIoM

Really good flavor! I made a version with maple syrup, vanilla, and blueberries. I can’t have dairy so I used 3/4 cup oat milk. I don’t think I added enough milk because it was kinda pasty. Next time I’ll make it with 1/2 cup of oats and 1 cup of oat milk and see if it fixes the texture.

  114. Ok, so I asked someone else to go out and grab the oats for me, and I specified the rolled oats part, but didn’t realize there would be quick cooking rolled oats. Will the recipe still work?

    1. Hi Rain – Unfortunately, quick cooking oats don’t work because they do not absorb the liquid in the same way that rolled oats do.

Thank you for sharing these with us! Overnight oats are so quick to make and you can just play with the toppings to keep it interesting. I made a chocolate chip with bananas and clementines for today. I also added spirulina powder for a little more protein.

hi brittany, i recently found your website and cannot wait to try some of your recipes, especially some of these variations as i LOVE overnight oats! i just had one question: it says 1 to 1 ration up on top, and in the actual recipe section it is closer to what it actually says on the cooking of the oatmeal on the box, which is 1/2 cup oatmeal to 1 cup liquid. was that an error or do you use extra liquid? just curious before i try it and find it too watery for me… 🙂

    1. Hi Carmen – I will only use extra liquid if I am not using yogurt. So for example, if you are using yogurt, you will us 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup milk and 1/4 cup yogurt or if you choose not to use the yogurt, you will want to add 1/4 to 1/2 cup more liquid. Hope this helps!

  121. I’ve made your banana bread overnight oats more times than I could count, it’s my go to! I am looking to switch it up a little and wondering if frozen berries can be used for overnight oats? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jackie – Yes, frozen blueberries should work, they might turn your oats a bit blue, but other than that it should work. Enjoy!

Just made my first one using one of those little packages of trail mix that Aldi sells. Being a Scott it reminds me of my childhood breakfasts at Mums.

So easy, fun, and delicious! When I tried overnight oats years ago, I admittedly hated it. It was weird, pasty, and an odd texture. Clearly, the recipe I used was bad, because I just made your recipe and it is DELICIOUS! In all honesty, it does take some getting used to, but going into it not expecting it to be like other warm oatmeals, it was a quick adjustment. I personally love to make baked oatmeal, and it’s always a hit with everyone, but this is a wonderful quick option, especially for this on-the-go single gal. (Plus, no chance of it turning out dry like baked oatmeal can if you’re not careful.) I’m officially a convert, which is wonderful because this is a healthy, filling choice. It honestly doesn’t get much easier than this. I’m excited to try some of your unique flavor ideas too – esp the cherry cheesecake one! Just for the record I did use the yogurt because I eat a vegetarian diet. The protein is essential for me, and I love the texture it added. I agree with a prior reviewer that it keeps you full longer than some other options for breakfast. Love, love love! I will be sharing this with all my friends and sisters.

    1. Ahh, this is the absolute best, Kirstin! I am so glad you found this recipe and are loving it. Thank you so much for coming back and sharing your review & star rating, I really appreciate it!

And I love that I can prep them ahead of time.

        1. YUM! I am SO glad you are loving this recipe, Samantha. Thank you for coming back and sharing your review & star rating, it means a lot to me!

  128. If I made a big base mix how long would it stay good for in an airtight container in the pantry? Obviously just the dry ingredients, then the other toppings/wet ingredients get portioned when going to be used.

    1. Hi Kim – That is a great question. I would say, it should last as long as the expiration date of your oats (and other ingredients). Hope this helps and you enjoy this recipe!

    1. So sorry to hear you did not love this recipe, J R. Some people prefer their oats this way and others prefer it cooked. I have lots of cooked oats variations on my site if you’re interested!

Great base from which you can add anything you want. The greek yogurt makes it soooo creamy. I put strawberries, blueberries, walnuts, and spiced it up with cinnamon and nutmeg. Perfect!
