These healthy chocolate covered banana pops are made with just four ingredients. Simple, refreshing and the perfect cool and creamy treat for summer.

This recipe brings me back! Chocolate covered banana pops were the ultimate treat as a child and they’re just as tasty as an adult! The best part is that these banana pops are super simple to throw together and the perfect recipe to bring your kiddos into the kitchen to help with.

Two frozen bananas on a stick covered in chocolate and sprinkled with chopped almonds.

I have a bit of a sweet tooth (which has heightened since becoming pregnant) so I always try to have healthy treats available so I can reach for an upgraded dessert instead of driving to the closest ice cream shop.

These chocolate covered bananas fit the bill and are perfect for these hot summer days when I could easily eat a pint of ice cream…

Ingredients in Chocolate Covered Banana Pops

  • bananas
  • chocolate chips – you can use dark chocolate or low sugar chocolate if needed
  • coconut oil – this helps thin the melted chocolate, making the bananas easier to dip
  • chopped almonds or shredded coconut – fun toppings for a little crunch and decoration

How to Make Chocolate Covered Banana Pops

To prep, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This prevents the chocolate from sticking to the pan and will make clean up super simple! Peel your bananas (a great job for kiddos) and cut each banana in half. Insert a popsicle stick or bamboo skewer into each piece of banana to make a banana popsicle. Arrange bananas on the prepared baking sheet and place in the freezer. Your bananas need to be frozen before moving on to the next step!

After patiently waiting for an hour or two while your bananas freeze, you can get your melted chocolate ready. If you have a double boiler, now is the time to get it out. If not, you can melt your chocolate in the microwave (see instructions in the recipe).

Dip each banana pop into the melted chocolate, sprinkle with chopped almonds or shredded coconut and return to the baking sheet. Repeat until all of your bananas are covered in chocolate and serve! The chocolate mixture should firm up pretty quickly after touching the frozen banana.

One tip: You definitely have to work fast when adding the toppings! The chocolate hardens quickly and once it’s hard the toppings won’t stick!

Chocolate Covered Banana Pops

These healthy chocolate covered banana pops are made with just four ingredients. Simple, refreshing and the perfect cool and creamy treat for summer.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 4 medium bananas
  • 6 oz chocolate chips, I used dairy-free dark chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons coconut oil
  • 3 Tablespoons chopped almonds and/or shredded coconut
  • 8 bamboo skewers or popsicle sticks

Instructions

  • Prepare a small baking sheet by lining with parchment paper.
  • Peel each banana. Discard peels and cut each banana in half.
  • Insert a bamboo skewer or popsicle stick into each banana half.
  • Lay bananas on baking sheet and freeze for 1 hour or until bananas are frozen.
  • Melt the chocolate and coconut oil together. You can use a double-boiler or microwave for this. For the microwave, add chocolate and coconut oil into a microwave safe bowl. Heat for 1 minute, stir and continue to heat in 30 second increments until chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
  • Dip each frozen banana half into the melted chocolate, coating as much of the banana as you’d like. Sprinkle with almonds or coconut to decorate. Do this quickly because chocolate hardens fast.
  • Place chocolate covered banana back on parchment lined baking sheet and continue this process until all the bananas are coated. Enjoy immediately. Store any leftover banana pops in the freezer for up to 1 month.

  18. My boyfriend and I almost drove down from DC for that show–we love Josh Ritter and Mason–but I forgot about it 🙁 But we did see Mason the next night and got to meet him too! He’s the best! But I think he was wearing the same shirt both nights…

    1. The coconut oil just helps to melt the chocolate and make it more liquidy, which makes it easier for dipping. That said, you could probably just leave it out. 🙂
