This chocolate covered strawberry smoothie combines strawberries, banana, dates and cocoa powder for a healthy smoothie that tastes like a decadent treat.
You are in for a treat today! Few things are better than berries and chocolate… especially chocolate covered strawberries.
Now combine those flavors into a smoothie and you’ve got a healthy breakfast or snack that tastes like dessert. Yes, please!

Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need for this smoothie:
- strawberries – I like to use fresh strawberries when they’re in season because I feel like they’re sweeter, but frozen strawberries work too and will make the smoothie extra thick
- frozen banana – frozen banana is the key to making smoothies with a creamy, thick texture. Just be sure to freeze your banana (unpeeled) before you want to make this smoothie
- protein powder – I used a chocolate protein powder, but vanilla will work
- raw cacao powder or cocoa powder
- unsweetened vanilla almond milk – other non-dairy milk (or regular milk) works great too
- medjool dates
- vanilla extract
- ice
- stevia – this is used for an extra hint of sweetness, but taste the smoothie before adding it because you might not need it if your berries are super sweet

Fresh or Frozen Fruit for Smoothies?
You can use fresh or frozen fruit in smoothies. It just depends on how thick (and cold) you like your smoothies. I personally love using frozen banana in smoothies because it gives them a creamy, thick texture that is similar to a smoothie you’d get at a smoothie shop. Check out my how to freeze bananas guide for some tips and tricks!
That said, I prefer to use fresh strawberries for this smoothie when they’re in season because they’re extra sweet. Frozen strawberries also work and will make the smoothie extra thick. If thick smoothies are your jam, opt for frozen berries.
This recipe also includes frozen banana chunks and ice so it will be chilled no matter which fruit option you use.

How to Make a Filling Smoothie
My number one tip for making a filling smoothie is adding some sort of protein. Without protein, you’re basically just eating a bunch of fiber and sugar. The protein helps balance the blood sugar spike and it help you feel satisfied and full longer which is always a goal in my book! For this smoothie, I like using vanilla or chocolate protein powder, whichever you have on hand. Obviously chocolate protein powder will give the smoothie even more chocolate flavor.
If you’re looking for a smoothie that used Greek yogurt to amp up the protein content, try my strawberry banana smoothie or this 3-ingredient mango smoothie. You can also try my strawberry protein shake!

Your day is off to a FABULOUS start. I’ve never had an almond milk latte. Every time I try almond milk in plain coffee it doesn’t go well, but perhaps if it was steamed it would be incredible. I’m on a mission to find a shop that offers one!
That smoothie and those flowers are both beautiful. Glad you’re taking the whole day off. Enjoy – and happy birthday, Britt!
Thank you Jenn! It’s hard to find places that use almond milk, but I’ve found two in Richmond so far – Lamplighter (a local coffee shop) and Whole Foods. 🙂
Hi Brittany! I just tried an almond milk latte at Whole Foods and it was AMAZING! I haven’t been drinking/eating dairy for a few weeks and have seen huge improvements in my skin and sleeping habit – so I think I’ll stick with it! I had missed my morning lattes and the almond milk coffees I was making at home just weren’t decadent enough to fulfill my cravings. I can’t wait to try Lamplighter next!
Very cool! You’re going to love Lamplighter. 🙂
Happy birthday!
That smoothie looks delicious!! Happy V-Day to you and your man 😀

WOW!!! After just completing a 30 day green smoothie fast that consisted of some not so easy ingredients to consume, this was a most pleasant treat! Today is my birthday so I treated myself to this smoothie minus any green leafy vegetables!! It is totally AWESOME!!! Thank you.
So glad you enjoyed it Charla!
Awesome! I only used one date and left out the stevia and it was plenty sweet for me. The chocolate and strawberry combination is a winner for sure.
Delicious and easy to make! Loved it.

So yum! I didn’t have any dates and didn’t add any sweetener and it was perfect without them! I also added in 1 T of chia seed and loved the addition. Thanks!

This is honestly one of the best smoothies I have ever made. It tastes JUST LIKE a chocolate covered strawberry! My fiance never drinks smoothies but I told him he has to let me make this for him because it’s that good.
I used 1 1/2 scoops Tera’s Whey bourbon vanilla protein powder and only 1 date because my protein powder was sweet enough.
Ahh yay! So glad this smoothie was a hit, Molly. Thanks for making it and for coming back to leave a comment + star rating. I so appreciate it. 🙂
I loved this! Tastes just like a chocolate covered strawberry. Next time I’m thinking of omitting the dates. The bananas and protein powder made it Sweet enough.
So glad you enjoyed this smoothie, Prisha! Thanks for the review 🙂
I think you need to modify your directions. Who freezes a banana with the peel on?
Hey Anthony – I have a note saying to make sure to peel the banana before freezing.
I actually had all the ingredients and felt that was destiny calling out! Perfect recipe…Thanks!

I’m so glad you enjoyed this smoothie, Courtney! Thanks for making it and coming back to leave a review. It means the world to me!
I have been trying to drink more smoothies, lately, and was excited when I came across this recipe. I used 3/4 c. homemade plain yogurt, instead of non-dairy milk for extra protein, and used collagen powder, instead of traditional protein protein. Since I used dates, I didn’t need to add any sweetener. The end result was a very creamy, thick smoothie, that was similar to a chocolate shake. It’s been a struggle for me to find a smoothie recipe I really like and this one is a real winner that I will continue to make. I also see you have a ton of other smoothie recipes on your site (yay!), so I can’t wait to try out your other ones.
Thank you for this fantastic recipe! Besides the amazing taste, I also love how incredibly healthy and guiltless it is.
I’m so happy this smoothie was such a success, Sara!! Thanks for trying it and coming back to leave a review. I really appreciate it!
10 stars! I soaked the dates while I gathered the rest of the ingredients just to make sure the blender could handle them. This is such a fabulous flavor combination, thank you so much, Brittany!!
