Add as Google Trusted SourceThis healthy guacamole combines creamy avocado with sweet green peas, fresh lime and cilantro. An easy, colorful dip for tortilla chips, crunchy veggies or your next taco night.

Peas in guacamole? I know, I was skeptical too. But after discovering this idea during a visit to Rancho La Puerta in Baja California, I had to share it. I don’t play around when it comes to guacamole, and this combination won me over!
The trick is using peas alongside the avocado. You still get that creamy texture, plenty of fresh lime and a little heat from jalapeño, while the peas add a subtle sweetness. It’s a fun way to stretch one avocado into a bowl of guac, especially when you’re serving a crowd.
I love it with crunchy veggies or spooned onto my fish tacos. And if you’re craving the classic version, my easy guacamole has you covered.

Why I Love This Healthy Guacamole

- One avocado goes further: Frozen peas help fill out the bowl, so you don’t need several ripe avocados to make a batch.
- Fresh flavor in every bite: Lime, cilantro and jalapeño balance the sweetness of the peas and keep this guac bright and flavorful.
- Easy to make your own: Leave out the jalapeño for a mild dip or keep some of the membranes for more heat.
- Made for sharing: Serve it with chips, sliced veggies and my healthy 7-layer dip for an easy appetizer spread.
Ingredients Needed

- frozen peas – the unexpected ingredient that adds subtle sweetness and bright green color. Use plain frozen peas, thawed and drained well.
- avocado – gives the guacamole its creamy texture. Look for one that yields to gentle pressure without feeling mushy.
- grape tomatoes – add juicy little bites of sweetness. Cherry tomatoes work here, too.
- red onion – adds crunch and a little bite. Chop it finely so it mixes evenly throughout the dip.
- jalapeño – brings a little heat. Remove the seeds and membranes for a milder flavor, or leave it out altogether.
- cilantro – adds fresh flavor. If cilantro isn’t your thing, you can skip it.
- lime juice – balances the sweetness of the peas. Freshly squeezed makes a difference here.
- garlic – I’d start with one clove, then add the second if you love a stronger garlic flavor.

How to Make Healthy Guacamole with Peas
Step 1: Pulse the thawed peas in a food processor or mini chopper until almost smooth.
Step 2: Mash the avocado in a bowl, then stir in the processed peas, tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, cilantro, lime juice, garlic and salt. Taste and adjust the seasoning before serving.
Tips for the Best Pea Guacamole
- Check for excess moisture: If there’s water collected in the bowl after thawing or cooling the peas, pour it off before blending.
- Take the edge off the onion: If your red onion tastes especially sharp, rinse the chopped pieces under cold water and pat dry before adding.
- Taste with your dipper: I like to check the seasoning with a tortilla chip if that’s how I’m serving it. A salty chip can make a difference in how much salt the guac needs.

What to Serve with Healthy Guacamole
- Chips and veggies: Tortilla chips are always a good choice. I also love carrot chips, bell pepper strips and cucumber slices for scooping.
- Jicama fries: My baked jicama fries are a fun alternative to chips, especially with a generous scoop of guac on the side.
- Burrito bowls: Add a spoonful to these Chipotle-inspired vegan burrito bowls with rice, beans and your favorite toppings.
- Enchiladas: Serve alongside my chicken enchiladas, adding the guacamole after baking.
How to Store Pea Guacamole
Storage: This guacamole tastes best fresh, but you can refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for 1–2 days. Smooth the surface and press plastic wrap directly against it before adding the lid to help limit browning.
Make ahead: For the freshest flavor, prepare the peas and chop the onion and jalapeño ahead of time. Refrigerate separately, then mash the avocado and mix everything together shortly before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
It has the creamy avocado, lime and cilantro flavors you’d expect, with a little extra sweetness from the peas. Blending the peas until almost smooth helps them mix into the avocado without leaving whole peas throughout the dip.
Peas replace some of the avocado while adding sweetness and bright green color. They also help stretch one avocado into a larger batch. Regular guacamole can absolutely fit into a healthy diet, too. This is simply another delicious way to make it.
You can mash the prepared peas thoroughly with a fork or potato masher before mixing them with the avocado. The guacamole will have a more rustic texture, with some pea skins remaining.

It tastes lovely but need to rember it isn’t guacamole. I had it with nachos but think it would be lovely in a sandwich too.
Glad you enjoyed it with nachos! A sandwich sounds tasty, too!
Why would you peel an avacado before cutting it in half and taking the pit out.? Why not just cut it in the skin and scoop it out. Less messy?
You can skip peeling the avo!
I like to quarter and peel my avocados in case they’re not perfect under the skin.
Sometimes there are small rotten spots that I don’t want to eat.
I just made this today and it’s gone! My boyfriend and I inhaled it for brunch! So good. Thank you!

Hey Pooja – Avocados are a big component to this recipe and I’m not really sure there would be a good substitute for them.
I made it 100% with peas and it’s great!
