This pumpkin fluff dip tastes like pumpkin pie filling with a light, whipped texture. It’s made with 6 ingredients, no pudding mix, and has an added boost of protein. Serve with apples or cookies for an easy fall treat!

Most pumpkin fluff dip recipes rely on instant pudding mix for that thick, creamy texture, but I wanted to make a version without it. Instead, I used cottage cheese and vanilla protein powder, which create that same fluffy, scoopable consistency while adding more protein than the classic version.

You know I love finding simple ways to add more protein to classic recipes, and this one turned out so good! It still has everything I want in a pumpkin dip: plenty of pumpkin spice flavor and a texture that’s thick, creamy and perfectly fluffy.

Why I Love This Pumpkin Dip

Woman (Brittany Mullins) wearing a white shirt and sipping a green smoothie.
  • Higher in protein: Cottage cheese and vanilla protein powder give it more protein than traditional pumpkin fluff dip.
  • Only 6 ingredients: It’s quick and easy to make, with no pudding mix needed.
  • Perfect for a crowd: This recipe makes a generous batch for pumpkin-carving nights, fall parties or Thanksgiving.

Ingredients Needed

Ingredients measured out for pumpkin fluff dip: pumpkin puree, protein powder, cottage cheese, powdered sugar, truwhip, and pumpkin pie spice.
  • full-fat cottage cheese – gives the dip a rich, creamy base and adds protein. Stick with full-fat for the best texture.
  • pumpkin puree – use plain canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling, which already contains added sugar and spices. Store-bought or homemade pumpkin puree works, but homemade puree may contain more liquid, so strain off any excess moisture before using.
  • vanilla whey protein powder – adds vanilla flavor, sweetness and protein. I used Clean Simple Eats.
  • powdered sugar – dissolves easily without the grittiness you can get from granulated sugar.
  • pumpkin pie spice – brings all those warm fall flavors together in one ingredient. You can use store-bought, but it’s also really easy to make homemade pumpkin pie spice.
  • whipped topping – gives the dip its signature light and fluffy texture. I recommend Truwhip for the best results. I also tested Cocowhip, but it produced a thinner dip.

How to Make Pumpkin Fluff Dip

A blender with ingredients used for pumpkin fluff dip.

Step 1: Blend the cottage cheese and pumpkin until completely smooth. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the protein powder, powdered sugar and pumpkin pie spice.

Step 2: Gently fold in the whipped topping, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Serve with apple slices and Simple Mills Sweet Thins for dipping.

Brittany’s Tips for the Best Pumpkin Dip

  • Use Truwhip: Different whipped toppings can change the consistency. Truwhip produced the thickest, fluffiest dip in my testing, while Cocowhip made it noticeably thinner.
  • Thaw the Truwhip first: Let it thaw in the refrigerator until soft and scoopable with no frozen spots. Don’t microwave it or leave it at room temperature for too long, since that can make it lose its fluffy texture.
  • Break up any powder clumps: If the powdered sugar or protein powder looks lumpy, sift it before adding so you don’t end up with pockets of dry powder.
  • Use whey protein powder: Whey blends smoothly into the dip and helps thicken it without making it gritty. Plant-based protein powders absorb more liquid and may make the dip too thick or chalky, so I recommend sticking with whey for the best texture.

What to Serve with Pumpkin Fluff Dip

Set the bowl in the middle of a platter with a few different dippers, or try it as a topping!

  • Fresh fruit: Apple and pear slices add a crisp bite. Granny Smith apples are a good choice if you like a little tartness with your sweets.
  • Cookies and crackers: Simple Mills Sweet Thins, gingersnaps, vanilla wafers and graham crackers are all easy options.
  • Pretzels: Go for sturdy twists or rods for that sweet-and-salty combination.
  • Pumpkin bread: Spoon a little fluff over a slice of my pumpkin banana bread. Let the bread cool first so the topping stays fluffy.
  • Apple cider donuts: Serve alongside my baked apple cider donuts with a small spoon for adding a dollop to each bite.

How to Store

Storage: Store the dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days. Keep any fruit, cookies and toppings separate. If a little liquid collects, gently fold it back into the dip before serving.

Make ahead: Prepare the dip up to one day in advance and keep it covered in the refrigerator. Add any toppings just before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make pumpkin fluff dip without protein powder?

The protein powder adds sweetness, vanilla flavor and thickness, so I don’t recommend leaving it out. Without it, the dip will be softer and less sweet.

Why is my pumpkin dip runny?

The type of whipped topping and pumpkin puree can affect the consistency. For the thickest dip, use Truwhip and canned pumpkin puree. I found that Cocowhip resulted in a thinner dip. Also, gently fold in the whipped topping so it keeps its light, fluffy texture.

Can I replace the powdered sugar with maple syrup?

I recommend using powdered sugar because maple syrup adds extra liquid that can make the dip too thin. A powdered sugar substitute should work, although the flavor will depend on the product you use.

Can I make pumpkin fluff dip with a food processor?

Yes. Blend the cottage cheese and pumpkin in a food processor until completely smooth, scraping down the bowl as needed. Transfer the mixture to a bowl before stirring in the remaining ingredients.
