These healthy and delicious avocado brownies are gluten-free, naturally sweetened and made with avocado instead of oil or butter. They’re rich, fudgy and super easy to make!
Brownies are one of my absolute favorite desserts! I mean who doesn’t love fudgy, chocolatey goodness?! I’m all for a good ol’ classic brownie, but I also love making lighter options. My black bean brownies and protein brownies are two of my faves, but these avocado brownies might just be my new favorite!
I know it may sound strange to add avocado to your brownies, but trust me on this one! The avocado helps to make these brownies incredibly fudgy, rich and chocolatey. It also adds a creamy texture and helps to keep the brownies moist without any oil or butter. If you’ve tried my chocolate avocado pudding or chocolate avocado truffles you know that avocado makes for a great addition to dessert recipes and goes unnoticed.
These brownies are seriously so good… I brought them to a girls night and they were polished off so fast. I can’t wait for you to try them!

Why You’ll Love These Brownies
- Healthier – Using avocado instead of butter or oil adds healthy fats and reduces the overall calorie count. These brownies are also gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-free.
- Rich and Fudgy – These brownies are incredibly moist and fudgy, with a deep chocolate flavor.
- Kid-Friendly – Kids will love these brownies and they won’t even realize they’re packed with avocado!
Ingredients Needed
- cacao powder – can’t have brownies without cacao powder! Just make sure you’re using unsweetened cocoa powder. Cacao powder works as well.
- oat flour – to make these brownies gluten-free I went with oat flour. You can use store-bought or make homemade oat flour by blending oats in a food processor or blender until fine.
- baking powder – this is a must to help the brownies rise and become fluffy.
- avocado – we’re using avocado to replace the oil or butter in these brownies! It’s such a genius hack because it adds creaminess and healthy fats without affecting the flavor.
- eggs – these are needed to help bind the ingredients and add structure to the brownies.
- maple syrup – my favorite natural sweetener to use in baked goods.
- chocolate chips – I love the added chocolatey goodness chocolate chips add to the brownies. I recommend Enjoy Life dark chocolate chips which is allergen-friendly or Lily’s chocolate chips because they are low in sugar and calories.

Recipe Substitutions
- Flour: I wouldn’t recommend substituting the oat flour with another flour. If you’re looking for brownies without flour, try my protein brownies or black bean brownies. You could also try my pumpkin brownies which are made with almond flour.
- Maple syrup: You can use honey, agave syrup or monk fruit maple syrup as a replacement.
- Chocolate chips: Feel free to skip these or swap them with a different mix-in like chopped nuts.
- Vegan: I haven’t tried these brownies without the eggs so I’m not sure how they would turn out. If you’re looking for a vegan brownie recipe try my chickpea brownies or sweet potato brownies instead.

FAQs
Avocado is a great substitute for butter, oil or cream in many dessert recipes.
I personally didn’t think you could taste the avocado at all, but I had a friend who could taste the avocado slightly on her first bite, but after that it went unnoticed.

These avacado brownies are delicious! Even my husband loved them! I added some orange zest to the batter, and wow! Great to have a super chocolatey goey brownie and not feel guilty about eating it! Thanks for an excellent recipe!😃
Hi! I was just wondering if I could add some protein powder with these brownies. Thanks.
Great question, Tammy! I haven’t tried adding protein powder to this recipe, but you could start with 1-2 tablespoons and add a splash of milk if the batter seems too thick. If you’re looking for a protein-packed option, I also have a protein brownie recipe you might like! Let me know if you try it. 🙂
Hi Brittany, I saw the recipe for the protein brownies and will definitely try those sometime soon. I made the avacado brownie recipe and it was delicious! I will try it with your suggestion for the protein powder next time. Excellent healthy brownie recipe! Thanks so much!
These were veeerrryy good. My husband is GF, and I took these to a dinner party so he could enjoy dessert, too. Everyone asked for the recipe and no one could believe they were avocado brownies!
Yay! I’m so glad these brownies were a hit, Amy. Thanks for making them and coming back to leave a review. I really appreciate it! 🙂
These were really tasty! I ate almost half the pan the first time I made it! I love that it’s healthier ingredients.
YUM! This is so great, Lyndi. I am so glad you gave these a try and are loving them. Thanks for sharing your review + star rating, I really appreciaet it!
We made this today (as written except I used diced avocado that I had previously frozen and then gently defrosted in the microwave). My 6 year old was a bit skeptical at the color of the maple syrup and avocado in the food processor but was quickly impressed that when all mixed together it looked just like brownie batter should. This recipe was a win. Not overly sweet at all and my kids licked their plates clean and asked for more!
WOO! This is amazing, Bethany. I am so glad you and the kiddos are loving this recipe and the brownies turned out great for you. Thank you for taking the time to share your review & star rating, I appreciate it!
