Pizza sauce can totally make or break your homemade pie. Once I realized how simple it is to make from scratch, I ditched the store-bought stuff for good. This version has been my go-to ever since, and I have a feeling it’s about to become yours too.

We love using this sauce for DIY pizza nights at home with the kids. They get to choose their own toppings, build mini pizzas, and honestly… it’s just as fun as it is delicious.

Why You Gotta Try This One

  • Ready in 5 minutes – No cooking required! Just blend and you’re good to go.
  • Simple ingredients – Nothing fancy here, just basic pantry staple ingredients you probably already have.
  • Versatile – Perfect for pizza (of course), but also great for dipping breadsticks, calzones, or even spreading on sandwiches.
  • Freezer-friendly – Make a double batch and freeze half for later, so you’re always ready for pizza night!

Ingredients Needed

Homemade Pizza Sauce ingredients: Can tomato sauce, can tomato paste, dried thyme, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic, coconut sugar, salt, black pepper.
  • tomato sauce – the base of the sauce. I use canned for convenience.
  • tomato paste – adds richness and a thicker consistency. Want a thinner sauce? Reduce or skip the tomato paste and adjust the salt to taste!
  • garlic – freshly minced for bold, garlicky flavor. You can use garlic powder (start with ¼–½ tsp) in a pinch, but fresh is best in this recipe.
  • coconut sugar – totally optional, but I like adding it to help help balance the acidity. You can also use honey or maple syrup if you prefer?
  • dried herbs – a mix of basil, oregano, and thyme gives that classic pizza flavor. If you don’t have all three dried herbs you can use 2-3 teaspoons Italian seasoning instead.
  • salt + pepper – essential for rounding everything out.

How to Make Homemade Pizza Sauce

Blender filled with tomato paste, tomato sauce, garlic, and dried herbs before blending pizza sauce.

Step 1: Place all your ingredients into a blender.

Step 2: Blend until everything is well incorporated and the sauce is smooth. Use in any recipe that calls for pizza sauce.

Tips for the Best Pizza Sauce

  • Use a high-powered blender: This helps to get the sauce super smooth, especially if your garlic isn’t minced finely.
  • Taste and adjust after blending: A little extra salt or a pinch of sugar can make a big difference depending on your tomato brand.
  • Let it sit: If you let your sauce sit for 15–20 minutes before using the flavors will deepen as it rests.
  • Double the recipe: Freeze half so you’re always prepped for pizza night!

How to Serve

Obviously, this sauce is perfect for spreading on your favorite pizza dough, but don’t stop there! Use it as a base for calzones, pizza rolls, or English muffin pizzas. It also makes for a delicious dip for breadsticks or mozzarella sticks. Basically, anywhere you’d use marinara—this sauce works.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

How to Store

Store any leftover sauce in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for up to 1 week. For longer storage, freeze it in a freezer-safe jar or silicone mold for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight or defrost gently in the microwave.

Homemade Pizza Sauce

This easy homemade pizza sauce comes together in just 5 minutes with simple pantry ingredients. Perfect for homemade pizza, calzones, or dipping!
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 2 cups

Ingredients

  • 1 15 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1 6 ounce can tomato paste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ Tablespoon coconut sugar, optional
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Place the tomato sauce, tomato paste, garlic, coconut sugar (if using), basil, oregano, thyme, salt, and black pepper into a high-powered blender or food processor.
  • Blend on high until all ingredients are well incorporated and the sauce is smooth and creamy.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings as needed. Add more salt for flavor, a pinch of sugar to balance acidity, or extra herbs if you like a stronger flavor.
  • Use sauce with desired recipe and enjoy!

Notes

  • Serving: Yields about 1 ¾ cups of sauce, enough for 3–4 medium pizzas depending on how saucy you like it. I recommend using about ½ cup of sauce per 12-inch pizza.
  • Storing: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months. If the sauce thickens in the fridge, just stir in a splash of water or olive oil to loosen it up.
