This healthy cranberry sauce comes together in 20 minutes with five simple ingredients. Fresh orange juice and zest give it a bright, sweet-tart flavor.

Cranberry sauce is one of those Thanksgiving sides people either love or skip, but I’m here to say it deserves a spot on the table! I’ve been making this version for years, and what sets it apart is that it has the classic sweet-tart flavor and jammy texture, but it’s naturally sweetened with maple syrup instead of refined white sugar.

Fresh orange juice and zest brighten up the cranberries, and the whole recipe is ready in just 20 minutes. Serve it alongside my wild rice stuffing and green beans almondine for a colorful holiday spread.

Why I Love This Cranberry Sauce

Woman (Brittany Mullins) wearing a white shirt and sipping a green smoothie.
  • Easy to customize: Add more maple syrup for a sweeter sauce or mash the cranberries as they cook for a smoother texture.
  • One-pan recipe: Everything cooks in one saucepan, so prep and cleanup are simple.
  • Make-ahead friendly: Prepare it up to five days before serving and check one Thanksgiving task off your list early.
  • Perfect for the holiday table: The tart cranberry-orange flavor adds a welcome brightness next to richer sides like my sweet potato casserole.

Ingredients for Healthy Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients measured out to make cranberry sauce: maple syrup, vanilla, cranberries, orange juice and an orange for orange zest.
  • fresh cranberries – the base of the sauce. Look for firm, plump berries and discard any that are soft or shriveled.
  • maple syrup – adds sweetness to balance the naturally tart cranberries. Use pure maple syrup for the best flavor.
  • orange juice and zest – add fresh citrus flavor and brighten up the sauce.
  • vanilla extract – optional, but it adds warmth and rounds out the tart cranberry flavor.

Cranberry Sauce Substitutions

  • Honey swap: Honey works in place of the maple syrup. Since it tastes slightly sweeter, start with a little less, then add more after tasting if needed.
  • Skip the orange: Replace the orange juice with water and leave out the zest if you don’t want the citrus flavor.

How to Make Healthy Cranberry Sauce

A saucepan containing whole cranberries. A hand is pouring maple syrup into the saucepan from a small ramekin.

Step 1: Combine the fresh cranberries, maple syrup and orange juice in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, cover and reduce heat to low heat and simmer.

Cooked cranberries in a saucepan with grated orange zest added on top.

Step 2: Stir the mixture occasionally so it doesn’t burn. The sauce is ready when the cranberries have popped open and the sauce has thickened a bit. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and orange zest.

Brittany’s Tips

  • Watch the consistency: The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools, so remove it from the heat while it still looks slightly looser than you want the finished sauce to be.
  • Keep it from burning: Once the mixture boils, reduce the heat and stir occasionally. The maple syrup can scorch if the heat is too high.
  • Using frozen cranberries: Frozen cranberries work, but the sauce may need a few additional minutes to thicken. I prefer the texture made with fresh cranberries, but either option works.

How to Serve Cranberry Sauce

This cranberry sauce can be served warm, chilled or at room temperature. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

  • With turkey: Spoon it alongside my air fryer turkey breast for a classic holiday pairing.
  • With a plant-based main: The tart cranberry flavor is delicious with my vegan lentil loaf.
  • On sandwiches: Spread it onto a leftover turkey sandwich with stuffing, greens and a little mustard.
  • At breakfast: Add a spoonful to oatmeal, yogurt or almond flour pancakes.
  • As a dessert topping: Try it over banana ice cream for a sweet-tart holiday treat.

How to Store Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Let the cranberry sauce cool completely, then transfer it to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze it in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen cranberry sauce overnight in the refrigerator and stir before serving.

Healthy Cranberry Sauce FAQs

Can cranberry sauce be made ahead of time?

Yes! You can make it up to 5 days before serving. Let it cool completely, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.

Why is my cranberry sauce still runny?

Cranberry sauce thickens considerably as it cools. If it is still too thin once cooled, return it to the saucepan and simmer it for a few additional minutes.

Can I double this cranberry sauce recipe?

Yes. Double all the ingredients and use a saucepan large enough to give the cranberries room to simmer. A larger batch may need a few additional minutes to thicken.

Is homemade cranberry sauce supposed to be tart?

Yes, cranberries are naturally tart, so the finished sauce should have a balance of tart and sweet flavors. Taste it after cooking and add more maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter sauce.

    1. Yes, honey would work as a substitute for maple syrup. It’s slightly sweeter, so you can use the same amount or start with a little less and adjust after tasting. Let me know how it turns out!

I embarrassingly loved the cranberry sauce from the can as a kid, but haven’t eaten any cranberry sauce in years. I LOVE this cranberry sauce! The orange flavor gets a chef’s kiss and I love that it’s sweetened with maple syrup!! This might just have to make an appearance every Thanksgiving from here on out 🙂
