A delicious carrot cake smoothie with carrot juice, a frozen banana and protein powder. This combo tastes like liquid carrot cake!

If you do a quick search for “carrot cake” on my blog, you’ll see that I am a full blown carrot cake lover! I’ve made carrot cake baked oatmeal, carrot cake bars, carrot cake breakfast cookies and more… I’ve been on a serious smoothie kick lately so set out to create a carrot cake smoothie because who doesn’t want to eat carrot cake in all forms?!

When I stumbled across 100% carrot juice in the store, I knew it would be the perfect base for my carrot cake smoothie. If you’ve never tried carrot juice, don’t let that scare or intimidate you! The juice has a hint of earthiness, but it’s quite sweet and paired with a few other simple ingredients, it tastes delicious in smoothies.

Ingredients to make carrot cake protein smoothie separated out on a table: carrot juice, protein powder, almond milk, cinnamon and sliced frozen banana.

Carrot Cake Smoothie Ingredients:

  • 100% carrot juice – I used Bolthouse Farms but if you can’t find any, I’m sharing two options below!
  • banana
  • almond milk  – I prefer unsweetened vanilla almond milk but feel free to use any milk of your choice.
  • vanilla protein powder
  • cinnamon
  • ice

What If You Don’t Have Carrot Juice?

If you don’t have carrot juice on hand or can’t find it in your local store, you can still make this smoothie. If you have a juicer you can make your own fresh carrot juice, which is so delicious. I love my Hurom slow juicer for this! Another option is to use a high speed blender (like a Vitamix) to process the carrots. That said if you choose to use your blender, the carrots will turn into a puree rather than juice. Your smoothie will be quite thick and you’ll likely need more milk to thin it out.

Carrot Smoothie Health Benefits

Have your (carrot) cake and eat it too! This smoothie is packed with healthy ingredients. Let’s walk through them!

Carrots – Besides being delicious, carrots are packed with amazing nutrients as well! They’re high in antioxidants, fiber, vitamin K and potassium. They have shown to help with heart and eye health as well as digestion. (Source)

Banana – Bananas are another top health food – packed with fiber, potassium, vitamin C and antioxidants. They have also shown to help with heart health. (Source)

Almond milk – Almond milk is low in calories, naturally high in vitamin E and is often fortified with calcium and vitamin D. It is not a great source of protein which is why I like to add protein powder to my smoothies to make them a complete meal or snack. (Source)

Protein powder – Every protein powder is different but here is a round of my favorites! Adding protein powder to a smoothie helps to keep you full and satisfied for hours.

Cinnamon – Cinnamon is basically the OG superfood. It’s loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been shown to improve blood sugar issues and to reduce heart disease risk factors. (Source)

  1. The carrot cake smoothie sounds great. I recently had creamy carrot soup (something I had never heard of before) and surprisingly it was good. I think carrot flavored foods often get over looked!

    1. I totally agree! I love creamy carrot soups but rarely make it. I guess I always think of using sweet potato or butternut squash instead.

  2. This looks delicious – I may have to wait till it warms up though to try it. I am not a smoothie-in-the-winter type of gal. 🙂

  3. What a beautiful smoothie!! I must admit that a carrot cake smoothie doesn’t sound all that appealing to me… but, I’ll try almost anything once! It’s just so pretty…. and it will give me an excuse to break out my carrots and juicer for fresh juice!

Thanks for sharing this recipe, totally going to “pin” it and try it out!

  4. I absolutely love carrot cake, and this recipe looks delicious. I guess I don’t really need the cream cheese frosting anyway.

  5. Oh MY! This smoothie looks so gorgeous and is bursting with flavours! Wonderful!!

  6. This is the best looking smoothie I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve been on a green smoothie kick but I think it’s time to switch it up.

  7. This looks soo yummy and indulgent! Can’t wait to try it. Love the color during this time of year – so cheery 🙂

I found this recipe on Pinterest and just so happen to have everything on hand. (Except the protein powder) I added a little vanilla extract and nutmeg too. It is sooo yummy!! Thanks for the recipe! 🙂

Just made this after my morning run. Delicious and creamy! I love to have a protein shake after exercising and this is a great change from the fruit or chocolate ones I usually make. Thanks for the great protein smoothie!

  12. Besides this sounding delicious, I absolutely LOVE these pictures! You make carrots look good 😉

  13. I am sorry for asking, but I have never seen carrot juice. Could I somehow just use carrots for this? does anyone have help for me? will be grateful. Many thanks.

    1. Hi Edith —

If you have a high-powered blender you could easily use carrots instead of carrot juice. Or alternatively, if you have a juicer, you could juice regular carrots and make your own juice to use in the smoothie! Hope this helps.

  14. I’m kind of new to the game. Is there any way we can use carrots instead of carrot juice for this? This sounds so yummy and I never seem to have any juice on hand but I always have carrots especially baby carrots. Thanks for the help.

  15. Where are the nutritional values of these smoothie?I would like to know how many calories, fat Protein and carbs I am consuming.

    1. Hi Brian. Thanks for your comment. I used myfitnesspal.com to calculate the nutritional info. Here are the stats (I used Sun Warrior Classic vanilla brown rice protein powder): Calories: 248 / Carbs: 42 grams / Fat: 2 grams / Protein: 18 grams / Sugar: 23 grams

Just made this delicious smoothie. I had all the ingredients except for the carrot juice; not to hinder me in any way, I just made my own using my Vita-Mix, then proceeded to follow the instructions. I will definitely add this to my smoothie recipes on file. It would be interesting to know the nutritional values if that would be at all possible.

    1. Hi Elizabeth. Thank you for making the smoothie. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

  17. Just had my carrot, banana, almond milk smoothie I added a little bit of coconut oil
delicious!!! Thank you for this recipe.

  18. I’ve been making this smoothie for the past couple of weeks… today I accidentally switched the measurements for the carrot juice and milk…. mmmmm very very good, i definitely recommend 3/4 carrot juice and 1/2 milk, add in a little bit of allspice with the cinnamon, yum yum! 🙂 thank you for posting this recipe 🙂

  19. Why have the protein powder? I’m not trying to be a smartA** . I just don’t understand why a person wouldn’t get their protein from some other food?

    Thank you.

    1. KJ, For me, adding the protein to this makes it a complete meal. It just ups the nutritional value for people who want more protein in their diets.

    2. I had this smoothie today for breakfast…. Yum yum!! I didn’t have the protein powder so I used hemp instead with a couple drops of vanilla. DELISH !!!

  20. Wow, I was just looking up smoothies and I read this. I work at Bolthouse Farms I can buy the stuff by the cases! I am going to try this! Thank you for sharing!

I stumbled upon this recipe last weekend and love carrot cake but had never used carrot juice in a smoothie. It is DIVINE! It is a perfect breakfast food and so very filling. I use the unsweetened almond milk/coconut blend and it really makes me thing I’m drinking a piece of my favorite cake. Thanks!

  22. I added pecans and it was so delicious! I will definitely be adding this to my repertoire of smoothie recipes!

  23. Wow! This was so yummy. I’ve never really like carrot juice but thought I’d give it a try and this was very good. Didn’t have protein powder so I added a tablespoon of plain yogurt instead.

  24. 5 stars
I just made this smoothie and I absolutely love, love, love it! I made my own carrot juice, left out the protein powder and added a leaf of kale. You would never know there was kale in this decadent smoothie. It really did taste like a carrot cake. My 23 month old son loved it too! Thank you for the recipe.

    1. Hooray! Thank you so much for coming back to comment and let me know that you liked it! Love the addition of kale. 🙂

    2. Thanks for the specific post.

What i do in the mornings is that i take carrots , spinach , beetroot (not much), one orange, one apple, a little Ginger and a lil mint and take out the juice out of them. This gives me 2 beer- mugs of juice. In one of them i add 1 scoop of Protein Powder. And i have 3 Egg Whites with it. Is it ok for someone who wants to build muscle?

  25. I have a banana allergy. I’m thinking of adding avocado instead, do you have any suggestions to replace the banana?

    1. Hey Holly! I think avocado or frozen mango would work well instead of the banana. Let me know how it turns out.

  26. Just made this a few moments ago using froz. banana + pear. Cut back powder to 1/4 scoop & added 2 Tbsp.buffalo yogurt. Also added in my vitamin drops. omegas, etc. Soooo delicious and definitely a keeper. Back to my smoothie now 😊

    1. So glad you enjoyed this smoothie recipe, Janet! Thank you for coming back to leave a comment + star rating. It means the world to me!

Really enjoyed the Carrot Cake Protein Smoothie – I added some oats, and turmeric (as I did not have cinnamon on hand) – delicious and a meal in itself!

I’ve made this twice now and can’t rave enough about it! I do like carrot juice and might increase the amount called for. For those who are not carrot juice fans, I would tell you that this has more of a vanilla-banana-cinnamon flavor overall. It has a beautiful color and I got several inquiries of, “Ohh! What is THAT? Looks delicious??” The cinnamon is the crowning touch! Can I give it 10 stars?

    1. Ahh that makes me so happy to hear, Paula!! I’m so glad you enjoyed this smoothie. Thank you so much for trying it and for coming back to leave a comment and star rating. It’s so helpful for other readers, so I appreciate it. <3

Although I feel that it didn’t taste like carrot cake to me, I will say that, with added sweetener (stevia), it tasted closer to a dreamsicle. I only had plain protein powder, so added a couple of capfuls of pure vanilla to compensate. Next, I think I’ll include a tiny bit of fresh-squeezed juice from an orange, and things will be just so! Thanks for sharing the recipe. And yes, it does have a beautiful color!

  35. 5 stars
I have to admit I didn’t expect this shake to be delicious but I tried it because so many of your recipes are. I’m so glad I did!!! This is my first homemade protein shake and I love it. Thank you!!

Even my boyfriend who is super picky about smoothies loves this one! Who doesn’t want carrot cake for breakfast? I didn’t have vanilla protein powder or almond milk so I used some coconut oil and raw honey to add some sweetness to the unflavored protein powder and oat milk. Worked brilliantly!

    1. Ahh that makes me so happy to hear, Gina!! So glad this smoothie was a hit. Thanks for trying it and for coming back to leave a comment + star rating. I so appreciate it. 🙂

  38. I LOVED this smoothie so much. I was getting bored of the same old chocolate/PB smoothies I was making and this was the perfect change up. Really tastes like a slice of carrot cake!!!! LOVE ALL YOUR SMOOTHIE RECIPES

Thank you so much Brittany!!! I got carrot juice from Costco to make a soup that I didn’t like and I was wondering what I could do with all the other juice bottles. Then I thought of you and all your wonderful recipes… each and every single one I tried I loved and this one didn’t disappoint! Outstanding! I will have no problem at all finishing all the carrot juice! Thank you!!!

I was surprised that I liked this one as much as I did. I am trying to make as many of your smoothie recipes as I can, and I wasn’t really looking forward to this one. However it was quite good. One problem is that I don’t typically have carrot juice, but when I do I will make this again!

    1. So glad you loved this smoothie, Joy!! Thanks for trying it and for the review. I so appreciate it!

Pretty good and pretty easy to make. Was better then I expected and would for sure make it again. I personally will add more cinnamon next time. 🙂 Thanks for your recipes Brittany!

To make my breakfasts more interesting, I tried to have a different smoothie for breakfast every day for 14 days. Every smoothie I tried was from your website and I highly recommend because it was so fun; but my favorite smoothie was this carrot cake one! It’s so good!

    1. Ahh this is such a great idea, Ruby. Sounds delicious and a great way to keep breakfast smoothies super exciting. Thank you so much for sharing your review + star rating, I really appreciate it!

Yum!! I’ve been curious about carrot juice and so glad I tried! I doubled the cinnamon and used hemp seeds instead of protein powder. Definitely adding this to my normal rotation.

    1. Ohh good note about the salt! So glad you enjoyed this smoothie, Alice. Thanks for making it and for coming back to leave a review. I so appreciate it!

  52. This is the perfect combo I have been looking for!! What is the point of making a protein smoothie if you’re just going to add a Boat ton of sugar and unhealthy fat to it just to make it taste decent. This recipe though!!!! So delicious and such a perfect combo together!
Note: I used lactose free regular milk & and unfrozen but very ripe banana (my blender is not that powerful)
Thanks for sharing this recipe with us!

    1. YUM! Sounds so delicious, Andrea. Glad you found this recipe and it turned out delicious for you. Thanks of your review & star rating, I really appreciate it!

  53. question: To keep dairy free, what dairy free protein powder do you use?? I’m now having ti go dairy free, along with my already gluten free, which is a struggle but it’s OK.
