An honest 21 Day Fix Review with my results, before and after photos and more. I loved the workouts and the focus on portion control.

This edition of Fit Friday is dedicated to my 21 Day Fix review. I was a little hesitant to share my review because I’m actually working on launching my own 28 day transformation program (more info coming really soon on this!) but my program is different and I know many of you are curious about the 21 Day Fix so I want to share my results and thoughts on the program.

I experimented with p90x years ago but it wasn’t until last December when I tried Focus T25 when I started to learn more about the different Beachbody programs. While I found Shaun T motivating and LOVED the short workouts T25 offered, I didn’t really get the results I was looking for. Around the time I was finishing up my 12 weeks of T25, I saw that the 21 Day Fix was coming out.

It appealed to me for several reasons — not only does it include quick, 30 minute workouts but it also comes with a detailed nutrition plan. Most Beachbody plans come with some sort of eating plan but the 21 Day Fix includes an 84 page eating plan/guide and is more heavily focused on following the nutrition plan in order to see results. It also comes with handy dandy little containers to measure your portions.

Knowing that the eating plan was focused on portion control is what sealed the deal for me. As you all know, I eat healthfully on a regular basis — with a few treats here and there. Life (and healthy living) is all about balance for me and it’s what I try to focus on with my health coaching clients as well. That said, I do really love food and struggle with portion control with certain foods. I’m human. 🙂

Knowing that the 21 Day Fix was focused on portion control, clean eating and 30 minute workouts, I thought, “What the heck, I’ll give it a try!”

Oh, and Autumn Calabrese’s abs didn’t hurt either. 😉

21 Day Fix Review

So what comes with The 21 Day Fix:

21 Day Fix Eating Plan

  • A simple eating plan where you don’t have to worry about counting ounces, cups, and calories.
  • You get seven color-coded containers that are different sizes for measuring green = veggies, purple = fruits, red = protein, yellow = carbs, blue = healthy fats, orange = seeds/dressing, teaspoon = oils.
  • You figure out your calorie level, which is based on your weight. There are four different calorie levels and each involves a different number of containers. I was in the 1,200-1,499 calorie range and was supposed to eat 3 servings of veggies, 2 servings of fruit, 4 servings of protein, 2 servings of carbs, 1 serving of healthy fats, 1 serving of seeds/dressing and 2 teaspoons of oil/nut butter per day.
  • You’re encouraged to drink plenty of water, but you can still have coffee and tea.
  • There’s room for treats like wine, oatmeal cookies, trail mix and chocolate as well. <— woot woot! Fair warning on this one, for wine the portion size is 4 oz a.k.a 2 sips. 🙂
  • The book includes a list of food ideas for each container and a few basic recipes.

21 Day Fix Workout DVDS:

  1. Total Body Cardio Fix — Includes moves that keep your heart rate up and your muscles engaged.
  2. Upper Fix — Targeted resistance training helps to shape your chest, back, shoulders, arms, and abs.
  3. Lower Fix — Firms and tone your entire lower body (glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves) while you blast fat and burn calories.
  4. Pilates Fix — Strengthens your core, elongates your muscles, and firms your hips and thighs.
  5. Cardio Fix — Gets your heart pumping and your body moving with body weight movements like jumping jacks and burpees.
  6. Dirty 30 — 4 rounds, 8 exercises.
  7. Yoga Fix — Active rest workout that helps to improve  balance, flexibility, and strength.
It also comes with a few extra bonuses like the 3 day quick fix eating plan — Autumn’s secret weapon for losing weight fast before a competition or photo shoot. My package also included the Plyo Fix workout DVD — a tough but awesome workout.

These before and after pictures crack me up — they were taken right after waking up in the morning or right after my workout. Don’t judge. 🙂

My results:

I didn’t see the crazy results that I’ve seen in some of the 21 Day Fix before/afters online but I think that’s because the plan is similar to how I already workout/eat and I don’t have much weight to lose. This wasn’t about seeing a lower number on the scale for me. It was more about challenging myself, building strength, and firming up my stomach (which is my problem area).

  • I lost 1 pound and 2.5 inches.
  • I gained strength — I can see more muscle definition in my arms, legs and abs.
  • My stomach seems flatter and my waist is smaller.

My thoughts:

  • The eating plan is super easy to follow — especially if you’re already eating healthy and fine with eating simple meals. There are plenty of recipes out there if you want to get creative but I found that keeping things simple made it easier to make sure I was eating the right size portions. We grilled out a lot and I steamed, grilled or roasted lots of veggies. I’d make extra so I had plenty for lunches throughout the week. I also ate a lot of salads and made a few simple recipes like this tempeh and kale.
  • I ate all the same foods I normally eat, I was just more mindful of my portion sizes.
  • Before following the Fix eating plan I was eating way more  fat and carbs than the plan recommended. I was also skimping on my protein intake. The portion size for protein is much larger than the portions I would usually serve myself, where as the healthy fats and carb portions were smaller. Examples: 12 raw almonds = one healthy fat serving. 1/4 cup steel cut oats = one carb serving.
  • Although it’s heavily promoted, I didn’t use Shakeology. It’s pretty pricey so I actually signed up to a be a Beachbody coach so that I can get the discount. I might try following the full 21 days again and incorporate Shakeology to see if the results are more significant.
  • I feel like the plan might be harder for vegans in terms of the protein options. I think you’d have to eat a lot of soy products and protein powder to get your protein in because beans are considered carbs on the plan.
  • I LOVED the workouts! I would buy the plan just for these. Every day you’re doing something different — from weights to cardio to pilates and Autumn is really inspiring and motiving. The workouts are only 30 minutes so the time goes by quickly. I was always sweaty afterwards and found myself sore the next day as well. That’s one big difference between the 21 Day Fix and T25. I was consistently sore with the Fix workouts and never sore with T25. I know being sore isn’t the ultimate goal of a workout but it felt good knowing that I was challenging myself and gaining strength.
  • I like the fact that all you need is the DVDs, floor space, a mat and one set of heavy weights and one set of light weights (or a resistance band) to get the workouts in.
  • I was part of a 21 Day Fix accountability group on Facebook that I checked in with each day. I know accountability is a big factor for me so this was really helpful and made the process of following the plan more enjoyable.

Overall, this was a fun challenge for me and I liked the program a lot! Although the plan wasn’t too different in terms of what I was eating or the amount that I was working out — it felt good to pay more attention to my portions and switch things up workout wise – I definitely challenged myself by lifting heavier and pushing myself through the tough workouts.

My only complaint about the program is the name, 21 Day Fix. I get it, we all want fast results but it makes it seem like a quick fix or a fad diet, which I’m not a huge fan of. I’m all about changing habits and making lifestyle changes that promote living a healthy, balanced life rather than trying to change drastically for three weeks and then going back to old habits. Overall, the plan guidelines are a bit more strict/regimented than how I eat and exercise on a regular basis but the foundation of the plan is legit — clean eating (real, wholesome foods), watching your portions and working out regularly with varied workouts. At the end of the day that’s the basics of living a healthy lifestyle. I get it though — Healthy Lifestyle Fix doesn’t exactly have the same ring to it. 🙂

If you’re interested in learning more about the 21 Day Fix, definitely check out the 21 Day Fix on the Beachbody website. Like I said, I signed up as a coach to get a discount on their products so if you do want to buy the 21 Day Fix or another Beachbody program, feel free to purchase through my account. I’ll get props for it and I can help you get started if you have any questions. 🙂

  1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the plan, Brittany! Some of the food servings seem a tad small. Did you find that you were hungry or was it a good amount for the day?

    1. I never felt hungry, probably because I was eating all whole foods rather than processed stuff. The plan recommends eating extra protein or more veggies if you’re hungry so on days I felt hungry that’s what I did.

        1. Are you drinking plenty of water? If ever I was feeling super hungry I’d add in extra protein or veggies.

        2. Week one is over and I’m the same exact weight… eating bird food, gross 4 oz. fish, using less containers than allotted, and working out. Never been so disappointed! *Eats pizza on day 8*

          1. Why are you using less containers than recommended then? If you don’t like the food you’re eating then change it, and eat the full amount you’re allotted. Seems pretty silly not to for me!

        3. I found that if I added an extra container of veggies and a half container of protein the hunger went away. I also added 2 more cups of water.

  2. I am wary of this nutrition plan because it called for you to eat as few as 1200 calories, 2 servings of carbs and 3 servings of vegetables per day. While the DVDs may be good, this nutrition advice is not going to lead to lasting changes. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the plan!

    1. I feel ya! It’s definitely on the lower end because the plan is geared eating at a calorie deficient to lose fat. The plan doesn’t recommend staying at this calorie deficient — once you reach your goal you should increase your calorie level. They give you formulas for weight maintenance calorie levels. I just looked them up and they seem pretty accurate/reasonable to me.

Overall, I think calorie calculations and recommendations should be just that — recommendations! Everyone is different and has to figure out what works for them/how much food/fuel their body needs.

I didn’t focus on counting calories during the 21 days, so I’m not sure exactly how many I was eating each day. If I were to guess, I’d say I was at the higher end of my bracket (around 1,500 a day). I added in extra protein, healthy fat or more veggies if I was ever hungry and I never felt low on energy or drained.

  3. I did the fix, as well, and I too eat very similarly, so I’m glad to see your results were similar to mine. We both don’t have much to lose and since we eat pretty clean, it wasn’t going to be any crazy results. I felt like I was doing something wrong. I also drink Shakeology daily and love it – worth the investment especially now that you’re a Coach!

    1. Did you do a post about your results? If so, I’d love to check it out.

What’s your favorite Shakeology flavor? I’m thinking of the trying the vegan chocolate.

  4. That makes sense! Look forward to hearing more about your program too. Best of luck with the launch!

    1. Thanks Lauren. I’m so excited for my program. It’s geared toward people who are new to clean eating but also great for those that have been at it for a while and reached a plateau or those that need/want the accountability and encouragement from a health coach!

  5. I read that for Vegans or Vegetarians that you may use Rice and Beans together or Quinoa and Beans together as a RED for your protein. Also Lentils are approved for a red container for Vegetarians & Vegans. That way you are not just eating Tempeh or Tofu & protein powder constantly 🙂 There is a group on Facebook for 21 Day Fixers that are vegetarians or vegans. Lots of good information if you are trying to follow this lifestyle and want to do the 21 day fix.

    1. Thanks for mentioning this Laura. Is this info in the guide book or did you find it elsewhere? I’m not seeing it.

      1. Hi, my question is if I take my weight of 121 x 11= 1331 + 400= 1731 then I think I saw you – 750 which would = 981 calories a day but they say round up to 1200 if you are below 1200… My fear is eating all those containers will make gain weight.. I’m not a big eater, I usually only eat a boneless skinless chicken breast and maybe a veggie early evening, nothing else during the day… If I do crave a carb it’s brown rice with breast instead of veggie,, So at this point I don’t even take in the 981 calories.. You think I should not mess with the containers and just do the DVD’s since I want to gain more muscle and not weight.

  6. The caloric range here I find extremely low. I was actually kind of surprised that the caloric level was this low, especially considering the amount of exercise you seem to have been doing during it. What were your thoughts on the caloric limit?

    1. I can definitely understand the concern about the calorie range. It’s on the lower end because the plan is geared eating at a calorie deficient to lose fat. The plan doesn’t recommend staying at a calorie deficient — once you reach your goal you should increase your calorie level. They give you formulas for weight maintenance calorie levels. I just looked them up and they seem pretty accurate/reasonable to me.

Overall, I think that you have to experiment and see what works for you and you body. These calorie calculations are just a guide and that’s what I used it as. I tried to follow the plan without worrying about the calories (the plan doesn’t focus on calculating calories — you really just measure the portions). That said, I did add in an extra protein, healthy fat or more veggies if I was ever hungry. I never felt low on energy or drained while doing this program.

For the exercise — the program workouts are 30 minutes a day (but two of the workouts are active-rest workouts). I wouldn’t consider it a super intense workout plan. Just to give you an idea, I wear my Polar loop for workouts and found that I was burning about 250 calories during the 30 minute cardio, full-body, dirty-30, upper and lower workouts. For Pilates and yoga (which are considered active rest) I was burning less.

  7. Great article! I found out that I also ate too many fats and starchy carbs. I also did not eat enough fruit. Love that this came out to help me make better decisions in regards to my portion sizes.

  8. Interesting. I would not do the eating plan, since those cals are WAY too low and I am not looking to lose weight. I was thinking about doing the T25. Did you do a review on the plan? You seem to be the first person to not give it a glowing review. We are prob on-par with fitness level, so I would be intrigued to hear more about this. I have been bored with my routine, but have been doing a lot of fitnessblender workouts before “biting the bullet” and purchasing T25

  9. Hi! I wanna to try 21 day fix just for jump start my journey to weigh loss. My goal is to loose 20lb and I planing to start chalean extreme. Can I follow the diet plan from 21df for another wokaut program?

    1. Hi Marta. Yes, I’ve seen several people that are following the 21 Day Fix eating plan but doing another workout program.

  10. Hi… looking for honest answers to help me make a choice. I am 52 years old. Weigh 200#’s, down from 400#’s (walking and biking and reduced portion size) I have thyroid disease, not going to do shakeology. Still have issues (sore knees, lots of loose skin) T-25 or 21 day fix? Also what does it mean when they say they did 10 rounds on 21 day program?

    1. Hi Jackie! First off, congrats on the weight loss you’ve already done!! Both are great workout programs. Overall, I think my preference would be the 21 Day Fix because it gives you the workout program but it also gives a meal plan. The key to sustainable weight loss is nutrition as you can’t out exercise a bad diet. Let me know what you end up deciding to go with!

10 rounds means that they completed the 21 day period 10 times so a total of 210 days.

  11. Hi! I ordered my package and can’t wait to start the program. Do you know maybe if its ok to have a fruit- vegetable smoothie for a meal?

    1. Hi Marta! That’s awesome — congrats! Yes, a fruit and vegetable smoothie should be fine — you’ll just have to measure the portions and make sure it fits with your daily container requirements for that day. 🙂

  12. Hi! Thank you so much for posting your results! I have been doing the 21-Day Fix for 11 days now but haven’t really seen any dramatic changes. The eating plan is somewhat similar to what I typically eat, although I usually go lower carb. I would like to lose about 5-10 pounds but I’m not overweight so this is more of a personal preference. This is the first time I have stuck with a fitness/eating plan and I am determined to see it through. However, I have been a little discouraged because I haven’t really seen any changes so far. Other stories out there show some dramatic differences. Your post reassures me that each of us is different and therefore all our results will vary. I know I am eating healthier and getting stronger even if it doesn’t necessarily show on the outside.

  13. I’m on day three of the 21 day fix. I am overweight for my height, and seeing as my youngest is four I can’t really blame it on baby weight 😉 just not eating healthy or maintaining a healthy lifestyle through three pregnancies (all boys!) and life afterwards. Being a full time student and a mom (only recently stay at home, before working at least one job sometimes two), quick and easy or high in fat were my go to eaters. Once I started to focus more on my health and weight (about two years ago) I had more energy and lost weight. Then I started the depo (yeah, I know some do gain weight and some don’t – well I did – like everything I worked so hard to get rid of). I can’t say that portion control didn’t have anything to do with it, I too have found that my eating is out of balance and actually no where near enough for my current weight even to lose. That was my biggest surprise – I wasn’t eating enough – probably because I felt so self conscious anyway. Not only am I seeing weightloss already with increased portions, water weight I’m assuming, but I’m also noticing an increase in energy and spiking or falling energy throughout the day. I’m sore though, I’ll give you that, which is surprising since I just finished Turbo Fire.

  14. Hi! I’m thinking about purchasing this. It has a 30 day money back guarantee so why not right? I’m 5’0, at around 123-125lbs. I’ve already lost about 80 lbs & my weight has just been fluctuating a lot while trying to lose the last 10-15lbs. I work out a lot & I do change it up all the time because I get bored easily, also as to not reach plateau, so I’m pretty sure I’m not losing the weight because of my diet.

Anyway, my question is, do you have to eat ALL of the servings? You said, “I was in the 1,200-1,499 calorie range and was supposed to eat 3 servings of veggies, 2 servings of fruit, 4 servings of protein, 2 servings of carbs, 1 serving of healthy fats, 1 serving of seeds/dressing and 2 teaspoons of oil/nut butter per day.” Would it hurt not to eat some of those servings?

Oh & what if I wanted to make a crockpot meal (this is my go to way of cooking)? Would I just put all the ingredients in the container they belong in before mixing them up into the crockpot?

    Thanks! 🙂

    1. Hi there! Autumn does strongly recommend that you eat all the servings. It can be challenge especially if you’re like me and would rather than carbs/fruit/veggies over protein but it’s doable. And you’ll get the best results if you follow the plan and eat all the servings!

For the crockpot meal, you could put all the ingredients in the containers they belong in before mixing them into the crockpot or if you want to be less rigid about it you could measure/estimate your portion once it’s done. For instance, if you made chicken and veggies in the crockpot, I would just measure it out once it’s been cooked. Does that help?

  15. That’s funny. I am a fulltime student and mom with my youngest at four. I recently purchased TurboFire and found it a little too intense. I am thinking about getting 21 day fix now, mostly for the portion control part of it. How is the program working for you so far? I have about 15# I’d like to lose, 175-160. Thanks!

  16. I just finished my first 21 days! Lost 12.5 inches, but only 3lbs. I started another round, and this time my mom started it with me. She has been trying to lose weight, and everything she tried failed. After seeing my results, she is determined to lose weight! I planned out her first week of meals/snacks, and we prepped as much as we could. She’s only on day 3, but i’m so proud she is so determined! She had made a few comments that her dinner, is too much and she cannot eat it all. Is it ok that she doesn’t eat it all? I’m not sure what to tell her… help anyone?!

    1. Thanks awesome, Janelle. Best of luck to you and your mom this time around! Autumn really recommends getting in all your containers each day so I would try to do so BUT if your mom is really full and is eating at least eating some portion of the containers for dinner, it should be okay. I wouldn’t recommend overstuffing yourself but I also wouldn’t recommend completely skipping containers. Hope that helps! 🙂

  17. Are there others that have lots of weight to loose using this program or T-25? Where do you find info on the extra workouts that are available if they are not in the set?

    1. Hi Jackie – there are definitely people with a lot of weight to lose that do T25 and the 21 Day Fix. Are you talking about the extra workouts for T25 or the extra workouts for the 21 Day Fix? Either way there is info on both on the Beachbody website. 🙂 Which program are you more interested in?

  18. I was looking at “TO PURCHASE THROUGH BRITTANY’S ACCOUNT” and see what you get by purchasing, I’m not so sure it would be a good idea to purchase through your account. On the same page or window purchasing the 21 Day Fix Essential Package on the top of the page you get a FREE Bonus WO DVD Plyo Fix WO included when you purchase through your coach or Team Beachbody sounds like a “scam” because at the very bottom of the same page you would probably ADD the same Plyo Fix WO DVD for $19.95 so what are you trying to say? I don’t want to purchase a package through you if I’m not going to get the Bonus WO DVD for FREE. I’m just repeating what Jackie’s reply above mentioned. Do you or don’t you? I’d rather get it from the website but I’m not really trusting the website because the last time I ordered from them it took them almost three months to get the last product because they lied that they never received my order yet they took my money from my bank account and tried to get me to pay again. At first when I had ordered other programs I had no problem getting them quickly but the last order last year that’s when I decided I wasn’t going to get ripped off again. So is it FREE or not purchasing through you? I’m almost sold by your web page.

    1. Hi Cynthia! Sorry for the confusion. I think the text letting you know that you get the free bonus Plyo Fix DVD is confusing. Basically when purchasing through the link I provided, you are purchasing through a coach (me) so you’re going to get the bonus dvd for free. Hope this helps!

  19. You were recommending the 21day fix…but you have not addressed my questions on May 31. I am the same person you answered on May 28. I don’t know how many different/extra workouts there are…you just mentioned that the kit you purchased included the Plyo fix workout. Any info you can tell me on either (T-25 or 21 day fix) would be helpful. Looking to do the best I can for my health on very limited funds. Thank you for taking time to help me.

    1. I apologize Jackie, I think the threaded reply option on here isn’t working so I missed your reply/question. Yes — if you order through my link the Plyo Fix workout will be included in the package. The Plyo workout isn’t prescribed within the 21 day program but you can use it on your own as supplemental workout or sub it out for one of the cardio workouts if you want a change of pace.

Like I said before, I think both programs are great for weight loss but the 21 Day Fix does a better job with the nutrition plan, in my opinion. It gives you more detail and it focuses on portion control. I have seen plenty of people (online reviews) with more weight to lose doing the 21 Day Fix and seeing good results.

In general, I see short programs like the 21 Day Fix or T25 as jump start programs. They will certainly get you started towards reaching your goal weight but in order to keep losing (or to even maintain) you’ll have to keep up the healthy habits (working out and eating clean). I think that’s why you see people doing several rounds of the programs. I’m sure you know all of this already, just a friendly reminder. 🙂

  20. I haven’t tried this yet, but I am almost positive it would work and I’m about to buy it now. I have lost 50 lbs so far in my weight loss journey and I want to lose more and a meal plan is the way to do it! I want to become a coach. Is it a good idea? I would love to become one but I don’t want to pay the start up fee and it be a waste of money.

    1. Congrats on your weight loss journey, Kellie! 50 lbs is amazing!! I agree that nutrition is the largest part of weight loss and the 21 Day Fix meal plan might be exactly what you’re looking for. I just became a coach and I would definitely recommend it if you’re planning to buy multiple products from Beachbody because you get a discount. You can also earn money if you’re sharing the products with others. Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions! eatingbirdfood at gmail dot com.

  21. Brittany, I’m new to the details you are mentioning in your replies. I have a few questions about some points that I will get to in a moment; first, I want to thank you for clarity.
None of these programs tell consumers the truth , If you have significant weight to lose,
say over five pounds, you will need to do them over and over again. What you explained as rounds.I try to read constantly on the subjects of weight loss and exercise and this is the first time anyone ever explained this.THIS LACK OF FULL DISCLOSURE IS WHAT IS SO
FRUSTRATING TO CONSUMERS. I’m a 57 year old ,5’4″,160# woman who is trying to get to
125#. The closest I’ve gotten to that goal was134#. I kept it off for years but ultimately gained back 25#. What is active rest? Also, what’s a polar belt? I do Bikram yoga, and
I walk everywhere I can . As a New Yorker I cover miles. I feel as if I am missing crucial information .The diet and nutrition industry isn’t telling the public the truth. The FDA
doesn’t protect the public health either; labels are allowed to be mere approximations.
We need honest, proven, complete solutions; it’s the 21st Century already; we need to turn the page for the public good. This is my first time ever posting on a site like this. I did it because you’re honest with your readers and you give thorough answers.
    Thank you again..
    Wendy

    1. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment Wendy. I appreciate it. An active rest day is a day where you do exercise that’s not super strenuous like yoga, pilates or walking. A Polar belt is a chest strap that you wear to track your heart rate. It syncs with a specific watch to show you your heart rate and how many calories you’re burning. Hope this info helps! 🙂

  22. Hello my name is Aliccia I have a 11 year old little girl she has a rare blood disorder and theres no cure for tjis she has to get chimo injections at Phoenix Childrens every 6-8 weeks, she is very overweight and i need help I don’t have alot of money but I will do anything please help if u have any advice . thanks Aliccia

  23. Just a quick comment about the name “21 Day Fix”… it’s not meant to “fix” you in 21 days. It’s meant to “fix” your eating habits/portion control in 21 days. They say it takes 21 days to create a habit. So, the idea behind the 21 days “fix” is that’s how long it takes to adjust and “fix” for healthy eating habits. 🙂

  24. thank you for your review I saw this infomercial on the TV this morning and was curious about it I know that you are not a doctor but maybe someone out there can answer my questions. I am a 52 year old woman with metastatic breast cancer and I need to lose at least 30 to 40 pounds maybe more. I am 5 foot 2 weigh 160 pounds and I have a sedentary job. since my treatments are over I have more time but not as much energy as I used to. Is this something that is healthy for a person in my condition? I know that the oncologist told me that he did not want me to do strenuous exercising as it will increase my heart rate too much so with that being said is this doable I’m really curious how you feel as I need to lose weight. I am not totally an unhealthy eater but know I need to eat healthier. I love to eat green chile and drink fruit smoothies, how is this measured with this plan? I have other issues besides my bc. I have hypothyroidism, hypertension, and high cholesterol. All is controlled by medication. I have been reading a lot about cancer and stuff and obesity plays a huge roll in cancer. So I know I need to lose weight. With my chemo I lost 35 lbs but gained back almost 20 of it. Please help. Thank you

  25. What a thorough, lovely, and honest review. I loved it! I recently ordered the 21 Day Fix and I am really enjoying it. I agree with you on the workouts. I love feeling sore… 🙂
I only wish that Autumn would do all of the workouts with you and not walk around to see what her exercise partners are doing. (I like when the trainer does everything with you.)

I really like the portion control system – that is one of my biggest areas of trouble. I eat pretty well, I think I just eat a bit too much. 🙁

I am eager to see my results on day 21! Thanks for the awesome review!

    – Just realized this post is from May! 🙂

    1. Hi Mariah. Thank you for your comment. Can’t wait to hear about your results with the 21 Day Fix. When will be you finished?

  26. Brittany,
I have all kinds of workout tapes/DVD’s and am over weight. I need aerobics to loose it but my problem is that I have major arthritis in my knees. So, when I do most of my tapes my knees hurt for days sometimes up to a week. Do you know if these tapes will be okay to do and be pain free? If not, I really don’t want to spend the money on any portion of that. In fact I recently purchased a workout machine that is pretty good in regards to being user friendly for the arthritis. I used it for a month and lost 0 lbs. but did lose 2.25 inches all over my body. I also have high cholesterol that I would like to get off medications as have been on them for almost 30 years and am 53 yrs old. I got discouraged and quit working out.
Is there any way to purchase a package without the DVDs? As, I am really interested in the portion control part for the different food groups and meal plans; recipes.
    Thank you,
    Mary C.

    1. Hi Mary — The 21 Day Fix is definitely easier on your knees than other at home workout programs like Insanity and p90x (also from Beachbody) but I feel like the cardio and leg workouts will still probably be hard on your knees because there are a lot of squats and lunges. And unfortunately you can’t just buy the meal plan piece of it.

  27. Hi name is Myra

I want to start loosing weight. I have always been big and I started accepting it. I have been trying to stay where I am but I’m actually gaining more weight every time. I said i would never reach the 200 side but i did and I’m scared of getting sick because I’m obese. I have a hard time finding out what to eat or how much of it and for what meal. This plan seems like it will help me since it’s mostly about portion control which i need help in. I was seeing if I could order for your account but not sure how to do it. I need to loose a lot of weight is this diet for long term or is it just for 21 days. Any advise you can five me would be great.

  28. 21 Day Fit eating plan is awesome. It is so easy but sometimes I forget to eat every 2 hours, I’m use to eating 4 small plans and before I had 1 big meal a day. Now I just make sure I eat protein with every meal. I do have a question when I was figuring out how many containers it seems like a lot for someone who needs to lose 70+ lbs, am I reading this right?

  29. I’m so over weight and out of shape. 2 knee replacements and 62, I need some help! Back is rough shape too. I was thinking of getting the 21 day, but maybe not now. I would like to see what you have. I can’t get on the floor as of the knees, so floor work out is out, but I can bike. Help!!!

    1. Hi Earlene! I don’t know if the 21 Day Fix workouts would be a good option with your knees and back issues. You could certainly follow the eating portion of the plan but the workouts might be a bit difficult. :/

    1. Hey Earlene – I’d recommend doing a little searching on YouTube so that you can preview some of the 21 Day Fix workouts to see what you think. Also, Beachybody just released Piyo — a body weight workout that doesn’t involve any jumping or weights it might be a good fit for you. I haven’t tried it yet, but it look like an awesome program and it comes with an eating plan as well! Here’s my link for it: http://www.teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping/PiYoBase?referringRepId=403911

      Hope this helps! 🙂

  30. hi!
I am naturally very thin, 108 I’m not wanting to loose weight I’m more intested in toning and streghtning & overall healthier eating also getting rid of my little belly , I really don’t eat very healthy now but I’m wondering if this would be good for me,
like I said I Dont want to loose weight … kinda a big fear of mine

    1. Hi Brianna. You could definitely still do the 21 Day Fix — I think the workouts are awesome and I think it would also help you create healthy eating habits. There’s a portion of the plan that talks about maintenance mode once you’re at your goal weight. For you, I would just stick with the maintenance calorie level from the beginning rather than eating at a calorie deficient (which is what causes the weight loss). Hope this helps.

  31. I’m in the same position as Earlene, I’m 60lbs overweight, 58 yrs old, I’ve had hip replacement and I have a bad back. I was just going to order the 21 day fix when I saw Brittany say the workouts may to intense but I didn’t see a response to Earlene’s question on what Brittany suggests instead of those workouts. Does Beachbody have something easier to start out with. Thank you

    1. Since I don’t know your exact situation, it’s hard to tell if the 21 Day Fix workouts will be too intense. I think the leg, arm, yoga and pilates workouts might be fine but the cardio workouts might be a challenge. That said, you could probably modify the moves. If you do a little searching on YouTube, you could preview some of the 21 Day Fix workouts to see what you think. Also, Beachybody just released Piyo — a body weight workout that doesn’t involve any jumping or weights it might be a good fit for you. It comes with an eating plan as well! Here’s my link for it: http://www.teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping/PiYoBase?referringRepId=403911

  32. I’m only 4 days into my 21 Day Fix, and while I like the program so far, it seems like the veggie portions are small. I agree, it is eye opening to see what’s recommended for healthy fats and I was overdoing that, but I feel hungry and would like to eat more veggies. Is anyone else thinking this?

    1. I felt the same way, Trish especially for things like lettuce when making salads, etc. I definitely ate additional servings of vegetables. If you’re feeling hungry I would recommend eating more veggies or protein.

  33. I just purchased my 21 day fix through your site because of your page. When I called in to get it, by the time they added all the extras and shipping – it was more $ plus the woman had no idea how to answer and questions. I just told her thanks but no thanks- I’d just order online from another site I’d seen.

Thanks for your tips and insight….can’t wait to get started.

  34. I just purchased your program. I am 64 years old and have stayed around 145 most of my adult life. I always have that extra 10 lbs. I want to loose. I ate healthy but did not realize my portions were so out of control. I really like the containers because they have shown me what a portion size should be. I have been a exerciser all my life also. I did the cardio this morning, it was a good workout and I was really sweating. I have to be careful with my knees I do not have problems with them now. I have had pulled hamstrings in the past and have some arthritis.
My question is: the Shakeology is so expensive, is there any way to get samples to make sure I like before I buy?

  35. I just ordered this today, and am glad I did after reading your review! I exercise 6 days a week, and eat healthy at my first 2 meals of the day, but find supper time to be a challenge. I usually come home starved, and eat anything I can find! I like that the eating plan is the focus.

  36. I want to piggyback off Cynthia & ask if spare containers are available? Can I purchase an extra set? Thanks 🙂

  37. Hello my name is Ashley. I purchased the program hoping to see some results before my vacation but recently got hurt at work. I cannot do any of the workouts only walking.
I am following the meal plan and it’s been similar to my before meal plans but I notice I’m eating wayyyyy more protein here and less carbs and fruits.
Do you think I will see results just from the eating, walking and all the water. I was discouraged when my doc said no exercise but I don’t want that to stop me.
    Thanks.

  38. HI MY NAME is gabby I jus did my first round of 21 day fix do I wanna do it again so do I eat at the maintenance level on page 76 of the book or do I continue on the level im on with the 1500 calorie level since I have not reached my goal yet

  39. Some of the containers are small, but you get multiple servings of each color based on your weight, so I was able to eat 3 red containers (protein) 4 green containers (vegetables) 3 purple containers, and 3 yellow containers (carbs).

It was a little less food than what I am use to but not by much. You don’t realize how much vegetables you can eat and not intake that many calories. I lost 10 lbs and 5% body fat sticking with the workouts and meal plan. You can see my results on my blog http://www.21-day-fix-review.com

  40. Hello I’m 28 years old and want to try this out but i’m scared I weigh around 350 lbs just wondering will I see results being that i’m only 5’5 and almost 350 lbs. I know that’s a lot of weight and the weight isn’t going to come off fast but i’m just wondering is this diet plan for people that needs to loose a little weight. I want to loose over 100 lbs just don’t know if this is a great start.

    1. Hi Jerica. I think you’d definitely see results doing the 21 Day Fix. It’s not just a diet plan for folks that need a small amount of weight — they recommend doing multiple rounds of the program if you have more weight to lose after the 21 days. I think it’d be a great start.

  41. Hi Stephanie, the biggest thing to remember is sticking to the containers, so you can make a fruit smoothie but you have to account for the containers. If you get 2 fruit containers per day and put 2 containers of fruit in your smoothie, you shouldn’t eat any more fruit for the remainder of the day. If you’re doing the Shakeology I’ve read that adding one container of fruit to it works well, but you have to remember that it would be one red container and one purple container just for that shake. Good luck!

  42. Hi there Brittany…I’m 46 and I am currently doing T25 and have changed my eating habits for the better. While comparing the two programs I noticed that the 21 Day Fix workouts seem more intense. I left the Army at age 36 for family reasons after 16 years and am looking to go back in to finish my time. At 46 I have some weight to lose and wondered which of the two workouts would help me to better achieve my goal. I weighed 279 January 1st when I started T25 and currently weigh 251. I am trying to get down to 225 and wondered if the the 21 Day Fix workout would help better. Any advice would definitely be greatly appreciated.

  43. Honestly your body may be in “store” mode because you are not getting enough calories. When your body isn’t getting enough fuel it conserves what it gets so you will not lose weight.

  44. I am thinking of ordering the 21 day fix. I am 5’6 and weigh 220. I have been overweight since a serious illness in 98. I usually don’t even eat breakfast or lunch and eat dinner. But I can’t seem to lose weight. I work around 12 hours + a day. I need simple and normal foods in plan or it won’t happen. Will this work for me??

  45. Is there a way to access the program w/o the DVDs? We killed our DVD player over a year ago and only access on-line video content now.

BTW – what’s the deal re alcohol on the program?

  46. Your story sounds very similar to mine. I hadn’t really been looking to start anything like this when I saw an informercial for it. I’ve been cooking and preparing more healthy meals lately, not just for myself but for my entire family. However,I had been wanting to figure out a regular exercise routine. I had been a member of a health club but had a hard time finding a time to go, and the only exercise video I owned was a little too long and getting very repetitive. I was very excited to get this new program in the mail, the portion control was needful for me since I ate way too many carbs in my diet (easily 6 times a day). That’s been my biggest weakness, I crave carbs all the time- though it’s getting a little easier now that I’ve been on the program for almost 3 weeks. I also crave sweets all the time, I’m not doing Shakeology either because of the price. I’ve thought about trying a different protein powder, just to see if a chocolate protein powder would help my sweet cravings. I didn’t do this to lose weight, I was 107 lbs to start. But I did want to get toned, and slim my belly down (after 5 kids I have a bit of a flabby tummy which I hide pretty well with clothes). I do feel stronger and I see definition especially in my arms. I feel like this has helped me a lot with my portions, and even though I have my cheats and don’t follow the meal plan to a T, I know I’m eating better than I ever have.
By the way, what Facebook group are you a part of? An accountability group would be a great idea for me.

  47. Hi I just ordered the 21 day fix. I used just their colored coded containers…how many sets would I need for a typical day? Rough guess. I was thinking of purchasing extra sets. My husband & I both are gonna do this together. I have a lot of weight to loose & thought this miht be a better option to get the food lined up ahead of time. Thoughts?

    1. You’ll probably only need one set if you’re just using the containers to measure your portions. If you want to use the containers like tupperware and pack items in them you’ll probably want an additional set or two, especially since your husband is doing it as well.

  48. I’m in the middle of week 2. The workouts are great- If you’re like me, primarily a vegetarian, you will not groove with the diet. Unless it’s a soy product, she considers all beans, except lentils, to be carbs! So the diet part does not mesh with vegetarians. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far which is not the results they boast. Also, the containers great, but they should give you more than one of each.

  49. This is the best review I’ve ever read – thank you Brittany. I do have a question about cooking for others when your on the plan. Don’t have kids but a husband who doesn’t need to loose any weight, just me and my current weight is 230. How do you suggest I keep him satisfied during my 21-day round(s)???

    1. Aww, thank you Kelly. I’m glad my review was helpful. I’d say just make extra of what you’re making for him. I’m sure he’ll enjoy the healthy meals, but he might just need a bit more calories since he’s a male AND because he wants to maintain instead of lose weight. Hope this helps!

  50. you have to eat all of the containers this program works great if you stick with it. i lost 10 pounds and 4.5 inches overall in 21 days

  51. 55 years old and quit smoking 7 months ago. Have tried to eat a1200 cal diet and counting steps (10000) a day. 0 weight loss. Will this give me any different results?

  52. Hi
I am in my 3rd day of 21 day fix I am not overweight I just want to lose 8-10 lbs and the only concern is the 4 red containers are too much for me, I have to force myself to eat and it’s a little of confusion on the blue container bc it’s a lot of cheese I like not in the list.
I also like coffee, what is bad about having coffee? Please explain to me thank you. I am 134lb, have to have 1,200 cals x day I get full easily, I only want to lose 8-10 lbs.

  53. Hi, I did three rounds of the 21 day fix extreme, but I lost 24.5 inches all over my body. It was fabulous. I did bend the diet a little bit, allowing myself alcohol and treats on occasion. However, I have not done the exercising for five weeks and totally did not follow the eating plan due to multiple reasons: vacation, schedules, etc. and I feel horrible. I was shocked by how quickly the weight came back on, how awful I felt, how I felt less strong, and how suddenly my back pain came back. I’m upset with myself for stopping but I am starting another round up today 🙂

  54. when on the 21 day fix are you supposed to weigh out veggies like cauliflower that is large or cut it to size and then see what fits in the container. I just weighed out 8oz one cup which is the serving size and good lord that is a lot of cauliflower lol!!!!

    1. haha. That is good question. I usually cut it and then see what fits into the container, but it’s hard with awkward shaped veggies like cauliflower. Another option would be to cook it and then put it in the container. I feel like it’s not that big of a deal if you eat a little extra cauliflower. 🙂

  55. Hi there! I just started the 21 day fix but I haven’t totally committed financially so I am trying to research as much as I can. A friend of mine just lent me the videos and I understand the portions and their measurements – but will likely buy the containers for ease of reference. My question is – I eat whole foods regularly and I really don’t have weight to lose, just toning and to be feel stronger…so I am wondering if you know of any sites that sell or would you recommend meal plans already done up for my caloric level (1200) to jumpstart me? I spent about 30 minutes today hungry and trying to figure out what to eat – how much to eat and how to divide up my container allowances throughout the day. Any advice etc would be so appreciated…just not sure how to meal plan quite yet on this program. Thank you.

  56. I have a question about the beach body portion containers. I’ve seen some ads that carry a Large Blue (large enough to fit all 7 portion containers in it) container, that in total would make 8 containers. What is the Large one for?

this is a link to the picture I’m talking about.
Thank you in advance and God Bless~

  57. Hi my name is Rachel I’ve only just started the 21 day fix diet I’ve only been doing it for 4 days and I can’t see that I have lost any waigh I only eat a egg salad or a tuna salad and a apple chopped up and I have done the exercise everyday how long does it take to see results if anyone can get back to me please thank yo you.

    1. Hi Robin. Totally understand — they are expensive. I’ll occasionally buy a bag of the vegan chocolate because that’s my favorite, but I recently found another brand that compares. It’s called IdealRaw, it’s plant-based, tastes really good and is much cheaper. I really like the chocolate flavor, but the peanut butter chocolate is my favorite. You’ll have to let me know if you try it. 🙂

  58. Thank you for answer. I have made changes to my diet for life. Always making adjustments that a can live with. No fads for me. When I say “loose skin”, i’m talking bat wings from the prehistoric times and my thighs are rolling over my knees. I have a long way to go. All reviews are from people who are much more fit and say they don’t have much to loose. Think I need a change because i’m stuck. Was told my muscles need a wake-up call. You have done both workouts? Still think 21 day fix is the better for me at this time? Also, the Plyo Fix workout is not included?

  59. Polar is a brand of a watch. It’s a brand that measures heart rate, etc when you exercise. It comes with a chest strap so that it can measure your heart rate while you work out.

  60. I keep hearing lots of pros and cons, I want to order the 21 day fix, but am not sure! Will I not be able to use the food I have on hand? I don’t eat a lot of greens but love a good salad! What kind of grocery list will I need?

  61. You could actually be eating too little. The reason why they allot what they do is to have a balance so your body can process the food properly. Try eating the amount you are supposed and see if that changes things.

  62. The plan already has you eating at a calorie deficit so eating less than allotted and working out probably put your body into starvation mode.

  63. if you go on the beachbody website it says that you should not be eating less than what is allocated to your calorie count… this could be why you are not loosing weight…. when you are not fueling your body enough to keep your energy and metabolism up your body stores the bad fats for the future if you are not taking in the good stuff. its science.. I am not a coach or work in anyway for beachbody not even on the program but I am a fan of the whole thing because of the science behind it. before getting to disappointed in your self go check out the website do some homework figure what works for you! either way dont give up its a life style change not a diet.

  64. Hi T. Marie. Quite often you need to eat more to lose, so cutting back on your containers is not the right thing to do. You need to get them all in for your body to maximize its fuel burning potential.
