Happy Saint Patrick’s Day

by Eating Bird Food on March 17, 2010

I celebrated by making a big loaf of Irish Soda Bread last night!

Would you believe that I’ve never baked a loaf of “real” bread – excluding quick breads (like Banana)? A friend of mine kept telling me how easy it was so I whipped out one of my cookbooks and started poking around. I came across this recipe in one of my favorite cookbooks, The Grit Cookbook.

What could be more perfect than Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick’s Day?

It turned out great. It’s a bit sweet from the raisins but the caraway seeds make it taste almost like a rye bread. I love the combination of flavors! I shared a few warm slices with Isaac and his friend last night, saved a bit for breakfast this morning and sent the rest with Isaac for his students to enjoy!

Breakfast turned out to be quite lovely. Too bad my eggs aren’t colored green- that would have been really festive.

I spread a little sunflower butter on the Irish Soda Bread after the photo and it was amazing! This combo of fruit, grains, fat and protein kept me feeling full all morning long.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day – if you need a delicious and easy bread recipe for the holiday you should definitely give this one a try.

At this point I don’t think I’m going out tonight so please drink a green beer for me!! :)

I’ve never made bread either! My Husband has had a few semi-fail attempts and it made me nervous to try.

I haven’t baked with yeast either- and the whole two hour waiting around thing always throws me off baking real bread- it’s on the to do list for when I get back– you’re in inspiration! hahah

I’ve never tried soda bread before but it looks delicious! As for celebrating St. Patty’s day.. after work I’ll be going home, maybe going for a run, doing my course and then possibly watching a movie. None of which involves green.. except for the possible green scenery during my run. Oh well.

Beautiful bread–perhaps I need to expand beyond my pumpkin and banana bread repertoire.

I made Irish soda bread today! I love St Patty’s Day.

I just read your polenta post, I do love polenta so. I never associated it with placenta before, but I think you’ve changed that now. Sheesh, thanks!

It’s funny how good Irish Soda bread is. I never really would have thought how lovely this bread is until I tried it. What a great way to celebrate the Holiday! ;)

Hope your day was perfect girl!

I’ve never had soda bread but it looks fantastic! Nicely done!! You’re not the only blogger not indulging in green beer this year – too bad for us!

I liked that you put dried fruit and caraway seeds in it! That’s an addition to consider for next time. Who says one can only have Soda bread on St. Patrick’s Day?
