Not going to lie, I L-O-V-E cereal. I grew up having it for breakfast almost every morning, as a snack after school and for dessert after dinner. My mom would keep the pantry loaded with at least three to four different boxes at all times and she didn’t make me eat the “healthy cereals” either. We had the good good –> Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cinnamon Life, Smacks and Cookie Crisp.

Isaac grew up loving cereal too so we’ll have it as a treat every now and then, but it’s no longer a nightly snack like it was when we first started living together. If I buy cereal now it’s usually for a recipe.

That said, there are still days when I have a craving for a bowl of cereal so that’s where the idea for this healthy superfood cereal came about. I wanted to create something that was cereal-like, but loaded with good for you ingredients.

This cereal blend features a base of raw oats, protein powder, chia seeds, buckwheat groats, coconut, hemp seeds, cinnamon and goji berries. Topped with banana slices and almond milk, it’s crunchy, a little chewy and perfectly sweet — similar to regular cereal, only not because this is actually filling. I’m full after one bowl, rather than headed back to the pantry to load up my bowl a second or third time like I do with packaged cereal.

Another great thing about this cereal is that it can be prepared ahead of time. You can easily make multiple mason jars full of the cereal blend during weekly meal prep. All you need to do in the morning is add milk and fresh fruit.

You can eat the cereal right away or let the almond milk soak into the ingredients a bit before enjoying. I recommend trying it both ways to figure out which texture you enjoy most.

If you let it soak, the oats will soften and the chia seeds will gel up so the mixture will become thick almost like chia pudding. This option is great if you want to bring the cereal to work with you. You can grab your jar, add fresh fruit and almond milk, let it soak on your commute and dig in once you get settled at work! Of course, having breakfast prepped ahead of time is great for those of us that work from home too. I’m all about making my morning routine more efficient and having breakfast prepped is key!

Added bonus, this superfood cereal is super customizable. Feel free to play around by adding some of your favorite superfoods — I’m thinking about adding cacao powder and maca to my next blend!

Superfood Cereal Blend

Finally, a healthy cereal packed with superfoods!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients  

  • 1/3 cup old fashioned oats, make sure your oats are GF, if that's important to you
  • 1/2 -1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 2 Tablespoons raw buckwheat groats
  • 1 Tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 Tablespoon goji berries, or dried cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon unsweetened shredded or flaked coconut
  • 1 teaspoon hemp seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • banana slices
  • 1 cup unsweetened Almond Breeze almond milk
  • optional add ins: maca, camu camu, mangosteen or your favorite superfood powder

Instructions 

  • Mix oats, protein powder, buckwheat groats, chia seeds, goji berries, coconut, hemp seeds and cinnamon in a bowl and cover until ready to enjoy.
  • When ready, pour almond milk over the cereal mixture and give it a big stir. Top with banana slices and eat immediately or allow mixture to soak up some of the almond milk before enjoying.

  3. I loved cap’n crunch (with berries of course) growing up. I could probably eat bowl after bowl of honey bunches of oats, but like you said, it’s processed food loaded with sugar so I too try and stay away from it. I love the idea of your cereal though and I’ve recently gotten into buckwheat groats and think they would make an awesome addition!

    love the recipe! just tried organic millet from nuts.com in my lekue rice
    and grain cooker this morning. absolutely d’lish. so fast so easy cleanup and

  8. Yum! This looks (and sounds) so good! And I absolutely love the Almond Breeze Unsweetened Vanilla Almond/Coconut Milk. After drinking both almond and coconut milk for a while, and not really loving either, I discovered this one. So perfect. Anyway, thanks for the recipe!

  9. Looks good, but the sponsored milk has to go.

    The ingredients in it are terrible for you; carrageenan especially.

    I’d expect someone who makes this type of cereal to also make their own almond/coconut milk that’s actually healthy for them. Oh well.

    So far, the only dairy alternative I’ve found at my local stores without garbage in it has been Westsoy’s organic soymilk. Ingredients? Filtered water, soybeans. Yeah, that’s it. Even Eden’s soymilk has more ingredients than that, and I consider them the highest standard for organic quality.

  11. This looks so amazing!! I was totally an unfun kid, my favorite cereal growing up was Kix. I hated all the weirdly sugary cereals with marshmallows and all that junk. I honestly loved Kix and plain Cheerios more than anything. 🙂

  12. Blue Diamond Almond Breeze (among others) contains carrageenan, which research links to gastrointestinal inflammation, lesions, and even colon cancer in animals. It is also used as an additive in de-icing fluid on airplanes.

    There is a lot of information on this via google.

    Whole Foods 365 almond milk does not contain carrageenan and Tree of Life also doesn’t include it.

    Personally, I will no longer be consuming Almond Breeze for this reason. Wanted to help spread the word about this additive.

  13. This is pretty similar to a bunch of superfood cereals on the market…at least here in BC. Holy Crap, Q’ia (from Nature’s Path), Boring Porridge, Anita’s Organic Breakfast Roots….I could go on. I’ve always wanted to mix my own blend though, because I figure it has to be cheaper than buying the ones I’ve listed above!

  14. Cereal is hit or miss with me–I love granola, though! I was so excited when I saw this post last night, because I actually had all of the ingredients I needed to make it on hand! I made a bowl this morning (with homemade cashew milk), and it was quite tasty! I look forward to playing around with the ingredients a bit–adding nuts, berries, etc… Thanks for the great idea!

Oh yum I just had this – I added some stevia drops and way more almond milk than was intended, but it was still pretty yummy 🙂 My favorite cereal used to be Kix, that cereal was simple and good. No one ever understood why I liked it though… Then Waffle Crisp (Oh my word), Fruity Pebbles, HoneyCrisp, and way more.

  16. I love this breakfast idea! I’m a cereal lover myself but try to consume in moderation because, as you said, it’s still processed food. I get bored with regular oatmeal, so this would be a great way to switch it up! I’m a big fan of combining the different grains and flavors. I’ll definitely be adding this to my morning breakfast repertoire!

  19. I saw this recipe on Instagram and loved it 🙂 Awesome idea to use hemp seeds and buckwheat groats! It can be hard to find healthy breakfast ideas, especially when you’ve used up every possible green smoothie recipe! I’ve been making this amazing Muesli Slice lately and adding all kinds of delicious superfoods to the mix, then eating it with some fruit and natural yoghurt.

    Delicious! I have made overnight oats before and like to eat those in the hotter months but this is even easier! And you can easily change it up depending on the ingredients you have.

  24. I love porridge oats and take it every morning, but this is a wonderful alternative for the warmer days ahead. I also love goji berries and anything coconut is divine. Bring on the Summer!!

    1. Yes! I feel like people eat cereal often because it’s so convenient so I tried to make this option quick and easy too. Making a big batch as part of your weekend meal prep is perfect.

  27. Talk about a recipe will all of my fave things! I may use buckwheat or quinoa flakes in place of the oats (I have celiac and can’t tolerate even gf oats), but all the other ingredients look spot on! Thanks for the breakfast inspiration 🙂
