Ready to try BLW? Here you’ll find all of the best baby-led weaning supplies to help you get started, everything from dishes and utensils to bibs and cleaning cloths.
Embarking on the baby-led weaning (BLW) feeding journey can be an exciting and nerve-racking one. Even when our pediatrician gave us the go-ahead to start solids with Tucker and even when I knew I wanted to try it, I remember feeling eager and a bit apprehensive. After all, three years earlier I had followed the more traditional route of baby food purees when starting solids with Olivia.
But, I soon realized that BLW was such a great fit for our family and a fun way to introduce new foods. Tucker often chowed down on the same foods the rest of our family was eating that day, which made it feel like a true family meal. And, I didn’t realize how rewarding it would be to see Tucker develop his fine motor and hand-eye coordination as he grabbed for all the new foods we put in front of him.
Another underrated perk of BLW: I didn’t need a lot of fancy gadgets or complicated tools to feed him. I relied on just a handful of feeding items that made our experience a bit easier. With that in mind, I rounded up my favorite baby-led weaning supplies that I used and loved, from our travel high chairs to full-coverage bibs to spoons that make self-feeding a breeze.
Picking BLW Supplies and Essentials
When choosing utensils, plates and other BLW essentials, I had a few must-haves in mind: I looked for products that were BPA-free, food-grade silicone (if possible) and items that were meant to be used for BLW.
The NumBum baby spoon set I love and include below is a perfect example—it’s a spoon set that I may not have considered if we were doing purees. But, I appreciate its thoughtful design to encourage self-feeding.
I also considered price point and longevity. In other words, could I use this product beyond BLW? And good news: I found many products that are still some of my favorites today like the OXO grape cutter and muslin wash cloths. You can always start small with a few BLW items and then figure out what you need and what’s best for your family.
My Favorite Baby-led Weaning Supplies
There are so many wonderful baby-led weaning items available. Below is a curated list of what I used and can personally recommend after our BLW experience.
Tiny Twinkle Long-Sleeve Bib
BLW doesn’t come without its fair share of messes, which is why I relied on these full-coverage bibs to keep Tucker clean (well, as clean as possible). These bibs come in a pack of two—believe me, you’ll want multiples! I also love that they’re waterproof, machine washable and tug proof, meaning Tucker couldn’t just yank it off when he wanted. The material itself is free of chemicals and contains at least 50% recycled materials. Bonus: these long-sleeve bibs also worked well for us if you’re looking for a bib with a fun pattern.

ezpz Silicone Feeding Supplies
I’m hard pressed to pick my favorite ezpz item for feeding. We have the tiny spoon, the tiny cup, ezpz first food set and the straw training cup. I love that all the ezpz products are 100% silicone (think: BPA, BPS, PVS, phthalate and latex free). Plus, they’re dishwasher safe and come in pretty pastel colors. They’re designed to help your child develop independent feeding skills. So when Tucker was ready to drink from an open cup, we used the ezpz tiny cup—it’s the perfect size and shape for little hands.

Avanchy Suction Baby Dishes
Chances are your baby is going to try and throw their plate and utensils on the ground. In addition to reinforcing positive behavior, I used these dishes during mealtimes with especially messy foods because they actually suction really well to prevent intentional plate throwing. We have the divided plate, the non divided plate and the bowl. While it comes with a spoon, we neve used them because they seem way too big to fit in a baby’s mouth. Instead, we let Olivia play with them in her kitchen.

NumNum Baby Spoons Set
While their bare hands will do the trick, I loved using these NumBum baby spoons, which made self-feeding so easy. There’s no right or wrong way to hold this spoon so Tucker never struggled with scooping or balancing pieces of food, and instead gained confidence with each mouthful.

Cleaning Cloths
Remember how many burp cloths you went through in the newborn stage? We likely went through just as many cleaning cloths during BLW. Instead of relying on single-use paper towels, I used these microfiber cleaning cloths. While I love them, I’ve since switched to these muslin washcloths and I love them even more. They’re absorbent but also easy to dry. Bonus: each is designed with a hook for easy hanging.

GROSMIMI No-Spill Sippy Cup
The AAP guidelines say that babies can start drinking small amounts of water (4-8 ounces per day) starting at 6 months of age. When that time came and I didn’t want to deal with another mess, I offered Tucker water in the Grosmimi sippy cup, a no-spill cup made of liquefied silicone, which is the same material used for baby bottle nipples. The cross-cut straw means that the cup won’t leak or backflow and I can personally attest that this sippy cup withstood many, many drops on the ground—and the occasional toss across the table.

OXO Tot Transitions Straw Cup
I also really like this OXO straw cup. There’s a cap that covers the straw when it’s not in use, which I liked because it helped prevent dirt or germs from touching the straw. I found it easy to clean and the two handles made it easy for Tucker to grip himself.

Stokke Clikk High Chair
I get asked all the time where our high chair is from. Unfortunately, it’s not made anymore, but if I were to register or purchase one for today, I would 100% go for the Stokke Clikk high chair. You can start using it at 6 months and I love that it’s just the right table height, making it the perfect seat for your baby to join in on family meals. I also love that it’s easy to wipe down (a MUST when BLW) and ergonomic with three different configurations and an adjustable foot rest.

Inglesina Fast Table Travel High Chair
We use this high chair all the time at restaurants and it’s been a total life-saver. I definitely recommend getting the tray to go along with it (and bringing wipes with you to give it a quick wipe down after your meal out). This high chair can hold a child up to 37 pounds and it’s incredibly portable, with hooks that twist onto almost all tables (all without leaving a mark).

Grape Cutter and Crinkle Cutter
Like many parents, I was nervous about choking when starting solids. But, I soon realized there’s a big difference between choking and gagging (read about it in my post here). One way to prevent choking is to provide appropriate foods and to always watch your child while they eat. Two tools that helped me immensely were the grape cutter and crinkle cutter. I used the grape cutter to easily (and quickly!) slice grapes in half and the crinkle cutter allowed me to cut foods like apples, potatoes, carrots and cucumbers into fun slices Tucker could grab. The great part is that both kitchen tools I still use today even after the BLW stage.
BUY ON AMAZON $4.99 for the crinkle cutter and $11.95 for the grape cutter
Feeding Littles & Beyond cookbook
The Feeding Littles team was such an inspiration and helpful guide when BLW with Tucker. I learned so much about BLW and new recipes to try in their cookbook. I also suggest following them on Instagram. They’re such a great resource for parents starting BLW and they gave me the confidence I needed to try new foods in an approachable way.
