So Close, Banish the Bloat

by eatingbirdfood on August 4, 2009

With my planned vacation to the Cayman Islands!!! drawing near (I’m leaving on a jet plane Friday AM) my to-do list seems to get longer and longer each day. I’m not complaining though because I’m super excited, in case you couldn’t tell. I haven’t decided if I’m going to blog while away. On one hand I would like to be totally disconnected for a few days, but on the other I want to bring my laptop and share my experience with you guys. I’m not certain there will be wireless where I am staying, so I guess that will be a big factor. Plus, I could always do a re-cap post when I get back. So we shall see. If I’m not here for a few days, don’t fret, I will return – hopefully with a nice tan!

So when not daydreaming of white sandy beaches I did actually get some work done today.

Flash back to before work though. Olive and I were early birds this morning. We woke up around 6:15 and went for a long walk (about 3 miles). I think that is the longest walk she has ever been on. She did great, but was totally pooped afterwards. I was starving and sweaty. After showering I whipped up a cold smoothie. I’m all out of almond milk (or any other milk for that matter) so I just used 1 cup of water. It turned out rather liquified, but still had a ample amount of flavor and it made more. I got 1 pint glass and 1/2 out of this concoction:

The liquified purple smoothie.

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup of frozen blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 3 pieces of ice
  • Amazing Grass Chocolate GREEN SuperFood

I also packed a little raw mix for a snack once at work. Navitas Naturals goji berries and raw almonds and cashews.

IMG_1476.JPG

I love these goji berries- they’re the perfect addition to any nut mixture, alone, or in salad (see my dinner)!

Speaking of salad, I had an awesome one for lunch. I used the left over oven “fried” tofu from Ellwood’s that I had bought for my soba noodle fiasco. Thank heavens, this lunch turned out much better than that little mishap. I used baby romaine, tomato, 1/4 of an avocado, the tofu, and Annie’s Honey Mustard dressing. Quite the salad.

IMG_1479.JPG

I am offically in love with Ellwood’s tofu. I have to figure out the recipe. I’ve said I was going to figure it out before and didn’t but this time, I ‘m determined. :)

I brought back some snacks to work with me for the afternoon. One snack was the remaining couple bites of a small container of Oikos plain yogurt that I didn’t finish last night with some fresh black berries.

IMG_1481.JPG

The other snack was 3 carrots. I ate those AND a mini bag of popcorn. I was a regular snack machine this afternoon, per the usual. I’m always so snacky at work in the afternoon. And I feel a lot of it is just from boredom, rather than actual hunger.

Anyone else with a desk job feel this way? Do you all have any good tips you would like to share for beating afternoon boredom snacking?

After snacking the afternoon away, I wanted something fresh and light for dinner. I made another huge salad, only I didn’t have any tofu left. :/ But I did add some goji berries. The berries were such a nice addition to the salad, I love the texture they added, and of course the flava flav.

So since I’m going to be living in a bathing suit for a few days come Friday I started thinking of ways to make sure I’m looking my best. No I didn’t head straight to the gym and do 5 hours of abs. It’s a little too late for that, but I decided to make sure I’m doing everything in my power to avoid any bloating.

If anyone else is interested, these are the tips I would recommend to beat the bloat:

  • Drink lots of water
  • Avoid salty foods (including pre-packed sodium laden ones)
  • Avoid sugary white flour carbs
  • Eat plenty of fresh veggies, fruits and fiber
  • Avoid chewing gum (especially those with artificial sweeteners) -I find that SF gum makes me really bloated
  • Avoid carbonated drinks – I rarely drink soda, but I do like my carbonated water which isn’t good when trying to stop bloating
  • Avoid gassy foods (beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.)
  • Avoid alcohol, especially beer
  • Drink hot herbal teas- my favorite tummy soothers include ginger, peppermint, and Yogi Detox teas
  • Keep moving – walking, exercising, cleaning, shopping :)

Hopefully I’ll stick to my guns and have a flat tummy come time to suit up.

If you have any bloat free tips to add, please feel free to do so below!!

Good Times

by eatingbirdfood on July 19, 2009

Yesterday was completely fun-filled. There were visits to the James River, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and World Market involved; a great mail surprise, and then a night spent with good friends (and a few drinks).

First up we went to the river because neither Isaac nor I have been swimming yet this summer- such a shame, really. Isaac and his friend jumped in a few times. The water was looking a little too mucky for me and I had some reading to catch up on so I decided to soak up some vitamin D on the dock.

It was fun. I love the feeling of basking in the sun, but I try not to do it without lots of sunscreen now, because when I was younger I didn’t know how harmful the sun really is. I used to go to the tanning bed and tan outside with oil/no sunscreen and now in my early 20′s I’m already seeing signs on sun damage on my skin… eekkkk. Needless to say, I’m a huge fan of the SPF now!

On a brighter note, after the river we were both starving so we headed over to Whole Food’s for a delicious lunch. As usual I piled my bowl high of greens and then topped it with a bunch a different salads from the cold bar. From what I can remember I got some kale salad, sweet tofu curry salad with raisins, roasted beet salad, seaweed salad, roasted corn salad, wheat berry salad, soba noodles, and some random veggies like broccoli, yellow peppers, and tomatoes. YUM!

I didn’t do too much damage at WF’s and came out with a few things- some kale, Original and Falafel SUNSHINE BURGERS (they were one sale and I had a coupon- what what!), Stevia!, rice paper wraps, red wine, and Sweet Thai Delight Yogi Tea.

Since Trader Joe’s is pretty much right next door we stopped there as well. I find there are different things I like to buy at both TJ’s and WF’s so whenever I’m in the area I usually stop by both. At TJ’s I purchased romaine lettuce, organic raisins, just mango slices, garlic hummus, frozen mango and blueberries, carrots, a bottle of white wine for sangria, Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk (TJ’s is the cheapest place to buy it so I stock up!), and Ezekiel Bread.

While waiting for Isaac to buy crickets from Petco, I broke into the Just Mango slices for a sweet snack.

As we were walking in the door from shopping I noticed a little package on the doorstep AND a magazine in our box. Great day mail wise! As soon as I put the cold stuff in the fridge I opened the package to find that it was from the lovely Heather from Hangry Pants. A while back I sent her some Zoe’s Bars and she said she wanted to say thanks. I told her not to send anything, but she is sweet and decided not to listen. I’m a grateful because the contents of the package were awesome!

IMG_1247.JPG

I love PB & Co. Cinnamon Raisin Swirl but I don’t buy it very often because of the hefty price tag. I can’t wait to make a bowl of Cinnamon Raisin Oatmeal. Heather also sent some homemade chocolate chip granola that is to-die-for. Isaac and I both LOVED it! I think I might need to hide it in a safe place until Isaac heads back to DC this week. :)

IMG_1246.JPG

Thank you so much Heather!!

After spoiling my dinner with the delicious granola above I headed to the gym to do a Summer Shape Up Workout. The Fitnessista sure knows how to get your heart pumping. It was a great workout and my legs feel like jell-o this morning (in a good way).

Once home from the gym I chopped up a tie-dyed pepper (Christmas in July?), some cucumbers, and broccoli for a salad. Isaac grilled some Amy’s veggie burgers and corn on the cob and also made some guacamole. It was 9:30PM before we ate dinner and I was starving so no picture, although I’m pretty sure we’ve all seen a veggie burger before.

IMG_1248.JPG

We ate and then a few people came over to hang out. At one point we were planning to have an actual party, but it ended up only being about 10 or so people. This was fine by me as the evening was more relaxing and the clean up was easy peasy. I used the TJ’s recipe again to make some white wine sangria with a bottle of riesling. It was mainly for Isaac sister because she likes sweet drinks but I ended up having two or three glasses myself. It was delish! We stayed up late chatting and I got to bed around 2:30AM, late nights have been the theme this weekend. Usually I turn into a pumpkin at midnight so I can already tell that I need to get in bed early tonight or else I’m going to be dead tired this week.

I’m up early this morning and Isaac and his sister are still snoozing. I made a quiet breakfast of TJ’s non-fat greek yogurt with honey, Heather’s GRANOLA, and wild blackberries. Plus a banana and almond butter on the side. The granola definitely made the dish!

IMG_1250.JPG

Now I’m debating on what to do for the day. I’m pretty certain there will be some cleaning, a little gym action, and then FOOD INC!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

Rise and SHINE

February 13, 2009

I woke up this morning and found this little ray of sunshine on the kitchen counter: Such a lovely way to start the day- xoxos to Mr. Isaac.  Only one more day until the my BirthValentines ( That’s what I like to call it since I’m a v-day baby) celebration begins! Well, actually I think [...]

Snack Attack

September 9, 2008

I did a bad job of getting photos of everything I ate today. And, not such a good job of choosing wisely when eating snacks, which I just so happen to be missing the photos of – coincidence? So for my healthier options of the day I did have this toasted peanut butter and jelly [...]

Purple Passion

July 15, 2008

Isn’t the color of this smoothie amazing. Blue is my favorite color, but I have to say this mauve color is a close second. I decided to make a smoothie with some of the blackberries that I have. Here’s my concoction:  It turned our really well. I think adding frozen fruits really helps get the [...]

All wrapped up

July 12, 2008

Lately I have been on a wrap kick. Yesterday for lunch I made this wrap using this recipe. It turned out pretty well, I just wish I had used more of the bean spread. And, maybe next time I’ll add some other veggies or fruit, maybe avocado. But it was tasty nonetheless.  Yesterday for lunch I [...]
