What Does Healthy Mean to You?

To me being healthy doesn’t mean going to the gym every day or eating a strict diet. It’s more about balancing physical, mental and spiritual aspects in addition to living a happy, long life. Eating Bird Food focuses on the food and fitness aspects but as you all know, I don’t eat 100% healthy all the time – some days I want ice cream or pizza or even a glass of wine and when my mind or body isn’t feeling a visit to the gym, I take a rest day. To be honest – I think all those things are fine and even necessary. I don’t deprive myself or push myself to exhaustion and because of this, I am able to make smart choices by default the majority of the time. Sometimes I find that people think it’s an all or none approach and it’s really not. Small changes can add up and being healthy doesn’t mean not having fun or not being able to enjoy food. It’s quite the opposite actually. πŸ™‚

  2. I agree balance is important but also doing things that you love to do. If you do not love what you are doing than you will not enjoy life, and that is not fun πŸ˜‰ I think having little fun (splurges) are fine as long as you have fun and really enjoy it. I love my days of treating myself to some wine or an extra piece of dessert or something like that!!! That is what makes life fun. Keeping everything in balance is key. A little work along with some enjoyment πŸ™‚

  3. healthy is respecting yourself and being proud of the person you are or are in the process of becoming. its about accepting your path and living to the fullest with nothing holding you back. balance is a key word for healthy. balance and love… with food, relationships, habits etc.

    when we think health- food most certainly comes to mind.. but health isnt a food subject.. its everything!

  4. I’d say balance. Everything in moderation! You want to feel good and happy. You don’t want to feel overtired from working out too much or stressed because you can’t find the most perfect health foods. I am big on terms like vegetable-based and eatlessmeatarian. Not to focus on the meat aspect, but because they focus on scaling back things rather than completely eliminating them. I love a green smoothie and morning run, but I also like cold beers, cupcakes, and long naps πŸ™‚

    Balance is so important, and I love hearing your philosophy on what it means to be healthy. Like you, I believe that health encompasses the whole person, mind, body and spirit. So often, people get caught up in one area, and they lose sight of themselves. Thanks for sharing and good luck!

  6. From my teen years I can attest that healthy is NOT:
    -running every day no matter how tired or sore you feel
    -refusing to eat “bad” foods
    -counting every calorie
    -weighing yourself or measuring your waistline every single day

    From my current lifestyle I can say that healthy IS:
    -exercising to beat away the blues, stretch out your legs, and feel energized
    -eating what makes you feel good (if it’s junk your body will know–there’s no reason to impose rules on it)
    -accepting whatever size you happen to settle at when you’re healthy in all other respects

  7. I think a big part of health is balance. It’s about giving your body what it needs, but also treating yourself to what you want every so often. It’s about being educated and informed. And it’s about a glass of wine every so often πŸ™‚

  8. i 100% agree. it’s really important to enjoy life, to be happy than to put too many restrictions on yourself. i think if you want to eat something a little naughty you should allow yourself it from time to time to keep yourself smiling and enjoying food.

    i also think it’s really important to prepare food, the more time i spend creating a meal the more i enjoy it!

  9. Just voted! You deserve it! I agree with your viewpoint completely. Being healthy sometimes takes small changes over time. I used to have that all or nothing approach but it is not realistic. Nobody is perfect!

    realizing that if I slip off my healthy living path (by accident or by choice) im never as far off track as my next choice.
