Tone It Up Bikini Challenge Recap

Happy Friday my friends!

If you’ve been following EBF for a little while you probably know that I’m part of the Tone It Up team and I participated in the Bikini Challenge that just ended in June. I get a lot of emails from people asking me about the TIU nutrition plan so I thought I would share on here my experience and how this year in particular, Tone It Up has really helped me.

The 2012 Bikini Challenge came at the absolute perfect time for me. I was in a workout rut, unhappy with the fact that I had put on extra pounds over the past year, and feeling self conscious about my body. <– I even wrote a post about it! As a health coach and healthy living blogger I have a good foundation and know all the things I should be doing to keep myself healthy and happy, but those things were starting to take the back burner. I think other fitness/wellness professionals can probably relate to this because often times our own health is scarified when we’re trying so hard to help others, which is a shame. You have to step back and remember to take the time to care for yourself and keep your body healthy and mind happy!

The Bikini Challenge was just the motivation I needed to get back on track. When the challenge started I was ready to fully embrace the TIU lifestyle – I began following the plan and checking in with my meals and workouts. I even teamed up with another TIU team member, Brittany, for accountability – we logged our meals and workouts in a spreadsheet, tweeted each other encouraging words and did the five day slim down together. Through following the plan and checking in I was able to lose the extra pounds I had gained, my stomach is flatter and I feel amazing!

Without the Bikini Challenge, I know I wouldn’t have pushed myself in the same way and I wouldn’t be seeing the results that I’m seeing. And when I say results, my results aren’t all about the few pounds I lost – I’m overall happier with my body and more self confident, which is way more important to me than a number on the scale. We went to the beach last weekend with my family and I felt so much better in my bathing suit than I have in the past – it was a great feeling!

Through the challenge, I also gained a ton of supportive friends – all the women that are part of the TIU team (including Katrina and Karena) are inspiring, motivational, friendly and helpful. And I think I’ve found my TIU soul sis – not only do Brittany and I share the same name, but we’re getting married the same weekend next May!

If you’re interested, here’s the video I made as my entry into the Bikini Challenge contest.

Overall, Tone It Up is a group of women striving for their goals and helping others along the way. It’s something I absolutely LOVE being a part of it! Thank you Katrina and Karena and all the Tone It Up team members for motivating and inspiring me every day, especially during this year’s Bikini Challenge. I also have to give a special shout-out to Kate Bear and Sarah of Sarah Fit, who convinced me to buy the plan in the first place!

While I didn’t win the Bikini Challenge grand prize trip to California (bummer!), I can honestly say that I feel like a winner just from the results that I have seen. Congrats to the all the winners – you all are amazing and such an inspiration.

  1. You look amazing. I am so glad it worked and it is so motivating. I bought the TIU plan in August, but find it difficult to get the products (I don’t live in the US), so I have not been really keeping up unfortunately. But seeing how you look, it makes me want to try and focus on it. Thank you a lot

  2. This is such a refreshing website! I stumbled across you through pinterest but also because I’m currently enrolled in IIN and I’m in the process of finding my niche and re-working my website. I was so happy to find someone who was successful with the education they received at the school. It’s sometimes hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when all you’re doing is learning! Lol. The Tone it Up girls are awesome too! I’m currently trying to find a balance between following their diet plan and using what works for me. I’m so glad their bikini challenge worked for you. It’s nice seeing how the two aspects, IIN and Tone it Up, have worked well together. Your story is very inspiring and I absolutely love your creative recipes! Keep up the good work. Best wishes 🙂

  3. Hello,

I have been reading your blog since almost a year, when I moved to live in the USA. I’m very shy specially when it comes to write in English, so this is my first time posting something… but you moved me with this post. I’m a doctor just beginning my carreer with 26 yo I totally share your feelings about everything that you said and the importance to feel good and confident about yourself… Also it was nice finally put a voice to your words.

Thank you for being such an inspiration.

  4. You look amazing!

I have the TIU Vegetarian diet, and was just wondering – do you stick to the diet to a T? I find it doesn’t have enough calories in it for me (when I calculated how much I would be eating in one day if I followed it, it was under 1000).

Just wondering what you did, because you look amazing!!!

    • Hi Kaleigh,

I don’t follow the diet plan to a T everyday – I make/eat a lot of my own recipes too. I agree that some of the portion sizes can be small, especially if you’re really active. I think it all depends on the person and their activity level. If you try following it again, I would recommend following the guidelines of the plan but upping your portion sizes to see if that helps!

  5. I loved when you posted so honestly about your weight/body/lifestyle struggles & I love even more than you followed through & were so open about your results. This is an awesome blog & I am super inspired to do more TIU workouts now.

I also think I need to finally try a protein pancake…

  6. IT’s awesome you’ve seen good results! This is a reminder that I should take progress pictures of myself. I never have, but I think it’s so rewarding to be able to look at pictures and really see the difference.

  7. Great job, you look great! Do you know if there is a way to still follow the challenge even though it’s over? I can’t seem to find the weekly posts on their blog?? I’d love to do some type of TIU challenge as I just discovered there workouts a few weeks ago and am loving them!! Thanks 🙂

  8. Your results are fabulous! I’ve been feeling like I’m stuck in a rut and not making much progress towards my fitness goals. Maybe this is something new I should try! I’ve looked for more information about the plan but their website really doesn’t tell you much about the nutrition and workout pieces. I’m sure you can’t share any major details but could you share how the workouts are structured and what the meal plan kind of looks like? Thanks so much for any help!

    • No problem Amy. Definitely check out the nutrition plan website, but here’s a little more info – The plan is 100+ pages which includes a meal-by-meal guide, recipes, tips, measurement guide, grocery list and the 7 Day Slim Down! It’s based on eating all natural, organic foods and the timing of food intake (no calorie counting!!). It also stresses the importance of portion sizes and important food combinations. You do get workout guide but most of the TIU workouts are free videos you can find on youtube or from the TIU DVDs.

      I hope that helps!

  9. You look great:) I tried doing the tone it up nutrition plan, but I found the portions were extremely small and left me starving. 1/4 cup of oatmeal left me full for all of 5 minutes. Maybe I was missing something!

  10. Ok You look amazing!!!!!1 You and sarah have inspried me and i bit the bullet and bought it! i’m starting on Monday!!!

  11. Brittany you look FANTASTIC! I am so proud of you! I remember when you first wrote your post about feeling self conscious. I love that you stuck to your word and instead of dwelling on the fact that you were unhappy at where you were, you were proactive and started making changes to get to your coal and be confident again! You are so inspiring and are such an amazing example/role model for girls who want to reach their goals the healthy way! Thank you for all of your recipes and honesty on your blog!

    Health & Happiness xo Catherine

  12. congrats!! you look amazing and i’m sure you feel even better 🙂 and thank you for turning me on to Karena and Katrina, they are so motivational!

  13. Hi, Brittany! I’m friends with Ellen – we went to IIN together and I met you once when we all ate at Ellwoods together – that was a few years ago so you probably don’t remember. I was talking to Ellen yesterday and we were talking blogs and we were talking about yours and I’ve stopped over a few times. So glad I stopped over today. I’m looking at this tone it up and i think it’s something i’m totally interested BUT i wanted to ask you – i’m about to have baby #2 and being a fellow IINer…i’ve never really stuck to nutrition plans – more of just a real foodie – but i’ll have SO much little time once baby #2 comes in sept…are the workouts long? would i still get benefits if i did half the workout with my limited time? and, i think i may just need the nutrition guide since my time will be so limited – think it’s great for a new mama of 2? i do like what i’m seeing and i think your story is GREAT! i’ve heard lots about your wedding and i’m so excited for you all…ellen is going to be a GREAT MIL!! 🙂

    • Hi Renee,

Thank you so much for reading and for commenting. I definitely remember you! You can try out the Tone It Up workouts without buying the plan because almost all of them are posted on the Tone It Up youtube channel. The toning workouts are about 30-40 minutes long, if you do three sets, which they recommend most of the time. But you could easily sneak in sets at different times during the day rather than doing them all at once. The plan has a ton of recipes and all are pretty quick and easy so I think they would be perfect for a new mama and I know there are a lot of moms that are Tone It Up members! Feel free to check out the nutrition plan site and let me know if you have any questions. You can email me at eatingbirdfood@gmail.com. 🙂

  14. This is so inspiring! I know from my own experience how much of a difference it can make on your outlook & self-love when you feel good about what you’re putting in your body & how you feel/look. Great job!!!

  15. Love this so much! I’m 47 and have grown kids and after years of wearing one pieces I recently got my fitness act together and have been enjoying confidently wearing my bikini for 3 years now! It’s never too late to start being the person you want to be! Love your blog!

  16. Brittany, you look AMAZING!!! Look at those abs!!

I’ve looked at the TIU Nutrition plan and I’m thinking I might have to try it. The extra kick in the pants might be just what I need 😉

Can’t wait for the farmers market + canning tomorrow! 🙂
