After attending last year’s Outstanding in the Field Dinner I didn’t know how Foodbuzz was going to step things up this year, but of course, they had grand plans…
The 2010 Foodbuzz Festival Gala Dinner was held one the second floor of the San Francisco Ferry Building, which looked amazing all lit up at night. The whole evening I kept imagining how gorgeous a wedding reception would be in this venue.
After enjoying a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres outside for a bit, we were seated for a grand 4 course meal and wine pairing! All the wines were from the lovely Bonny Doon Vineyard.
The number of glasses proves they weren’t kidding about the wine.
The food, which was prepared by Paula Leduc Catering, was quite simply put – ahh. ma. zing!!
The first course was a roasted golden beet tart with beet, feta and currants, wild arugula and basil puree. This dish was paired with 2009 Ca’del Solo Albarino.
This dish only heightened my love of beets!
The second course was seared scallops with braised fennel with fried fennel fonds* as a garnish, paired with the 2007 Le Cigare Blanc.
I don’t really like scallops so I almost opted for the veggie option, which was tofu “scallops,” but I’m so glad I stuck with the traditional menu item. The scallops were cooked to perfection and tasted fabulous paired with the braised fennel. Perhaps I like scallops after all!
*Fennel fonds are the leaves on top of the fennel bulb. <– I had to google that to be sure. 😉
I liked all the dishes but my absolute favorite course of the evening was the fresh cod served with local wild mushrooms and a butternut squash puree.
Sadly, the best dish was paired with my least favorite wine. I was looking forward to the only red of the evening, but the 2006 Le Cigare Volant wasn’t up my alley. The cod more than made up for it though!
Last up was dessert – a buttery almond cake with oranges and figs and a 2008 Vinferno dessert wine that was sweet and delicious. I could have easily drank 3 glasses of the stuff.
I cleaned each of my plates and drank all my wine.. nothing went to waste. Feeling full and a little tipsy, I gladly choose to walk back to the hotel rather than cab it. It made for a fun walk. 😉
Although Cara and I were up for going out no one really seemed in the mood so we headed back to the hotel room, changed into comfy clothes and enjoyed some roomie bonding. T’was a lovely little evening!
Alright folks, one more Foodbuzz Festival post and things will be back to normal around here. Have a lovely day!
