New Stuff

by Eating Bird Food on December 3, 2009

Are the holidays making you a little crazy? I don’t feel stressed out yet but my social calendar is filling up ever so quickly (a wedding, a graduation, 3-4 holiday parties, social media meetup, raw foods meetup, cookie bake, 4 birthdays in my family, not to mention the actual holidays themselves- we celebrate both Chanukah and Christmas) and I still have yet to start my actual shopping!! AHH.

With that, here’s a short post of what I’ve been putting in my mouth lately.

New Kashi TLC that I really enjoy:

I’m pretty sure the Toasted Asiago is my favorite flavor yet. Although, it might be a tie between these and the Honey Sesame.

The last of the crackers were consumed with some left over Sweet Potato Lentil Chili.

A piece of Newman’s Own Dark chocolate with Himalayan sea salt.

The sweet and savory combo is awesome- love it!

I’ve also been snack on some granola- in the form of a plank.

I reviewed some Honest Foods products long ago and I remember loving the blueberry vanilla crackle plank. This time I wasn’t too impressed, Before the planks were chewy and easy to break apart. This time the plank was REALLY hard. I honestly thought twice about eating it because I didn’t want it to break my teeth- not so fun. I’m wondering if the recipe has changed since the packaging changed? Has anyone else tried both the new and old granola planks?

I also had a new granola bar recently. The folks at 18 Rabbits offered to send me a few bars to sample and I was excited to give them a go. The only one that I have tried is the Funky Figs and Cherries and it was delicious. I loved the seedy and nutty texture of this bar and the flavor was neither too sweet or too bland. I have to say it’s one of the best granola bars I’ve ever tasted. I’m pumped to try the other flavors- particularly the Haute Diggity Date. I love dates and how cute is that name?

Also, I have to mention that I truly frustrated myself today. A co-worker knows that I like the veggie chips from Fresh Market. She brought some into work today and gave me a 1lb freezer bag about 1/4 of the way full. I ate a few handfuls as a mid morning snack and then ate quite a bit more during a 12PM social media marketing webinar that I was listening in on. Long story short by the end of the morning I had eaten about the majority of the chips and by the end of the day the bag only had a few crumbs left!!! I was shocked and annoyed that I ate that many.

Note to self/blog world – these are addicting!!

I know there are worse things to eat a whole bag of, but these aren’t exactly healthy. They’re kind of one of those not so healthy “healthy” snacks- especially when you can’t control how much you eat. I have a couple foods that trigger mindless eating including trail mix, chex mix, tortilla chips, and dry cereal – I guess this is another one to add to the list. Do you have any specific foods that trigger mindless eating? What do you do to keep it from happening?

So after the major snack session I wasn’t even that hungry for lunch.

I ended up going halfsies by having half a pummelo,

A delicious fruit btw. It’s similar to grapefruit only it’s easier to peel and sweeter.

IMG_2692.JPG

And half a pb and jelly sandwich on cinnamon swirl bread.

IMG_2697.JPG

I wouldn’t normally make my sandwich on this type of bread, but the double fiber wheat was moldy. :/

And the cinnamon swirl was actually quite delicious.

So tomorrow’s another day and since I ate all the veggie chips today they won’t be around to tempt me tomorrow. I guess that’s the one good thing about eating the whole bag. :)

Happy Friday – any big plans for the weekend?

Change of Plans

by Eating Bird Food on November 26, 2009

Everything was looking up this morning- I had a 3 hour work day ahead and Isaac’s temperature was down to 98°. It seemed that we would still be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with Isaac family as previously planned since he was feeling better.

I had a delicious bowl of oatmeal/oat bran with some of the usual suspects- maca powder, chia seeds, homemade pumpkin butter, and better n pb.

I left work early for the holiday and came home to grab lunch before heading out to run some errands.

There was a bowl of roasted red pepper and tomato soup eaten and I also had some baby carrots, left-over hummus from the work feast, and homemade whole wheat pita chips that I made last night.

Why did I never realize how easy it was to make delicious pita chips?

Whole Wheat Pita Chips

  • Whole Wheat Pita
  • Spray oil
  • Garlic powder, sea salt, ground pepper (to taste)

Cut the pita into small triangles, sprayed them with oil, and sprinkled them with the seasonings. Easy peasy.

I snack on a few pieces of Newman’s Own Organic 70% Super Dark Chocolate and made my way out the door.

I got a little Christmas shopping done, along with a few small purchases for myself. That always happens to me! :)

I also made a last minute stop by two of my favorite local groceries – Good Foods and Ellwood Thompson’s. I had some t-day ingredients that I still needed… but those few items turned into a few more and I even ended up buying dinner. The Goddess Tofu wrap was just too hard to pass by- you might remember it from the many times be-fore.

It’s interesting how different the wraps look each time I have them, however they may look dissimilar but they always taste yummy. I had 1/2 of the wrap and snacked on some veggie chips.

After dinner I starting prepping my dishes for Thanksgiving and just as I was taking the roasted butternut out of the oven Isaac took his temperature again and it was BACK UP TO 102°!! This means no visiting Isaac’s grandparents and Thanksgiving will be spent at our humble abode. It’s a little sad not to spend the day with family as planned, but we don’t want to risk getting anyone else sick and we’ll make the best of it together at home. We’re actually thinking of doing a board game marathon, which I think will be a fun!

I’ve already prepared a couple dishes that I was going to take with us but we don’t have any of the other traditional Thanksgiving fare around to make a big meal so you’ll have to wait to see what we end up throwing together tomorrow.
