Sweet Frog Moves In

by Eating Bird Food on January 8, 2011

If you know me, you know I love ice cream! I always have and probably always will.

Since adopting a healthy lifestyle I try to curb my cravings for ice cream with healthy options like regular yogurt or banana soft serve. Those work quite nicely but sometimes you need a little something more and the proliferation of fro yo shops has made it easier than ever for all of us healthy eating ice cream lovers to indulge. Especially if you live in L.A. as they seem to have more Pinkberry shops and than McDonald’s. <–I’m lovin’ it.

And it’s great because many frozen yogurt spots are self-serve so you can get just the amount you want, not an arbitrary amount that comes in a small, medium or large bowl. Plus they almost always have toppings bars with healthy options like fresh fruit, granola and raw nuts.

Well today, my wildest dreams came true because a frozen yogurt shop opened in Carytown and it’s walking distance from both my house and my office!!!

As Isaac mentioned, this could be a very good thing or a very bad thing. Depending on how you look at it. The way I see it, it’s a great thing. :)

The shop is full of vibrant colors, fun decor and most important – delicious frozen yogurt!

The yogurt wall has plenty of flavors to choose from. Currently on tap: chocolate, cappuccino, peanut butter, cake batter, cookies n’ cream, red velvet cake, cheese cake, blueberry, strawberry, georgia peach, honey dew and original tart.

The toppings area is quite abundant as well with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, pineapple, peach, bananas, mango, kiwi, cinnamon apples, fudge brownies, cheesecake bits, mochi, nestle dark chocolate, nestle white chocolate, coconut flakes, sliced almonds, oreo, graham cracker crumbs, m&ms, chocolate chips, kit kat, jelly bellies, gummi bears, fruity pebbles, granola, peanuts, pecans, peanut butter chips, chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, twix, reese’s and walnuts.

My treat today involved the honey dew, original tart and georgia peach flavors with strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and graham cracker crumbs!

If you’re in my neck of the woods and like frozen yogurt, check out Sweet Frog. I personally think it’s the best fro yo you’ll find in Richmond.

On a very sad note, an unexpected and tragic event happened to one of my family members last night. Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers. Depending on the circumstances (which aren’t looking good) I may be absent from the blogosphere for a few days. :/

6 years and Fresca …on Addison

by Eating Bird Food on December 14, 2010

Last Friday Isaac and I decided to go out to dinner to celebrate our anniversary. We didn’t have any place in mind, but I’d been wanting to try out Fresca on Addison, a new Vegetarian Bistro that’s been open for two weeks.

Fresca on Addison.JPG

It’s a small, casual restaurant. Probably not a place where most folks would go for their anniversary dinner, but I felt at home there. Especially considering most of the menu items looked like something I would might make for dinner on a regular evening.

Everything on the menu is vegetarian, with plenty of vegan options dispersed throughout and we were told that everything on the menu can be made vegan if you ask (except the egg salad sandwich).

We ordered at the counter and despite the restaurant being pretty full, we were served our food quickly.

Sippity sip:

Isaac ordered a cappuccino and it was amazing- one of the best cappuccinos he’s had in a while.

We spilt a bowl of the curried butternut squash soup with coconut milk and toasted almond. It was delicious and very similar in flavor to the soup I made a few weeks ago. I was wishing I didn’t have to share it with Isaac, but it was our anniversary so it would have been mean not to share. :)

For dinner I ordered the Fresca Cobb – broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, avocado, cucumbers, cheese, fakin’ bacon bits, olives, lemon/olive oil dressing.

I loved it – the portion was perfect and I didn’t need much of the dressing because the veggies and toppings were so flavorful. The slightly cooked (I think they were blanched or steamed) broccoli, cauliflower and carrots were a new salad topping to me. I typically always eat raw veggies on salads but they were excellent this way. I liked that they were still crunchy but slightly soft and more palatable.

Overall, this salad is definitely something I could easily prepare at home, but I liked that about it. Simple, tasty, healthy- you don’t find many restaurants that cook like this around here. And, I’ve already started incorporating blanched veggies in my own salads at home. So glad I picked up that little idea.

Isaac had the ratatouille (squash, zucchini, kalamata olives, red pepper and onion) served with quinoa.

He really liked the vegetable/quinoa combo and said the portion was just right. In addition, Isaac hates overcooked veggie so he was pleased with the perfectly cooked veggies Fresca served up.

I stole a few bites and enjoyed the tasty ratatouille as well.

Overall, we had a great experience and I’ll definitely be going back. The food was fresh, flavorful and healthy – something that’s not particularly hard but rarely done. I surely hope my fellow Richmonders will help support this local restaurant (AKA eat there!) and help keep this place around because its GOOD! Now that we’ve tried a soup, salad and entree; I’m already planning our next visit so we can try a sandwich and pizza!

One of the drawings on the restaurant wall says what I often want to say but would never say aloud:

I’ll gladly let Fresca on Addison do it for me. ;)

Doesn’t it feel odd to see real food on EBF? Don’t get me wrong, I loved the 12 Days of Cookies but it’s also nice to see some savory eats up in here. I feel like I’ve been on quite the sugar binge lately so expect more savory and less sweet coming up soon.

Enjoy your Tuesday!!

What Does Healthy Mean to You?

June 16, 2010

To me being healthy doesn’t mean going to the gym every day or eating a strict diet. It’s more about balancing physical, mental and spiritual aspects in addition to living a happy, long life. Eating Bird Food focuses on the food and fitness aspects but as you all know, I don’t eat 100% healthy all [...]

Broad Appétit RVA

June 8, 2010

This year’s chef competition included a “Healthy Dish” category among the other awards categories – “To Dine For,” “To Diet For” “Ambience/Décor” and “People’s Choice.” Broad Appetit Along with all the restaurants there was also other vendors- including local organic farms and speciality food providers, in addition to live music. iIMG_5131.JPG IMG_5139.JPG Isaac and I waded through the crowd while perusing the options until spotting something that caught our eye. tastebuds american bistro Tastebuds American Bistro had something for the both of us. … I’m already thinking of ways to incorporate these two flavors into some of my favorite things – (ie smoothies and oatmeal) After walking around in the heat, sweating through our shirts and eating a few mid morning snacks, Isaac and I hopped in the car and headed to our CSA’s farm party for lots more food (that was delicious and free!!).

May 11, 2010

Bulk bins are awesome! You can buy as little or as much as you want, the prices are typically cheaper than packaged items, and it saves on packaging and waste. What’s not to love? I tend to get overly excited when I see that a store has bulk bins. It might have something to do [...]
