Gone Phishing & Raw Super-Beverages

by Eating Bird Food on December 6, 2009

I went to my first Phish show last night! It was the last show of the Fall 2009 tour, we had excellent seats, and the set list was amazing!!

The first snow I’ve seen this year was swirling down as we made our way to Charlottesville in the party van. I stayed warm with some coffee in my new travel mug.

We arrive quite early and had plenty of time for tailgating before the concert. It was cold and snowy, but still fun because one of my best friends in the whole wide world met us in the parking lot!

Brrr… luckily the show was indoors. I don’t think I would have made it.

To be honest, I’m not the biggest Phish fan, but Isaac is and he wanted me to go. Although I didn’t recognize many of the songs, I enjoyed the show and boogied the entire 3.5 hours that they played. The highlight of the night was when a naked guy made his way on to the stage and ran around the band members until security was able to pounce on him and carry him off stage. It was definitely an experience I won’t forget. Not one person in the crowd was sitting down or standing still, there were glow sticks/necklaces/bracelets flying around, and lots of tie-dye, hemp, dreads, and smoke clouds. Basically one big groovin party.

We ended up getting home around 1AM which lead to me sleeping in this morning. I ran to the mall to do a little Christmas shopping and then stopped by my local organic market for a Raw Vegan Super-Beverages class put on by the Richmond Raw and Living Foods Meetup Group.

Laura Fox, author, teacher and raw vegan educator put on the workshop. She brought both a vita-mix and her juicer and made about 6 different recipes for everyone to try.

We covered the raw chai latte, warm chocolate mylk, superfood smoothies + expansive elixirs. One thing I found interesting is that she used nettles and mate tea for the liquid in many of the recipes. I’ve never thought to do that before, but I’m excited to try it out for myself.

Although all the beverages were delicious, one that I particularly enjoyed was called Orange Silk.

The recipe was a little different today, but here’s the one Laura has listed on her website.

Orange Silk

  • 4 very very ripe Hachiya persimmons, peeled
  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1 handful fresh mint
  • 1 fresh basil leaf
  • 1 stalk fresh dill
  • 1 tsp. raw honey
  • 1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup water (or more if you want it thinner)

Blend in your VitaMix or other blender until smooth.

Serve in a beautiful glass with fresh mint sprigs and a dash of vitamineral green or other green powder.

The class was really interesting and inspired me to experiment more with my juicing and smoothie making efforts!

Now I’m just wondering how it’s already Sunday night?

Perfect Evening

by Eating Bird Food on December 5, 2009

Our Friday evening was relaxing and perfect. We cleaned up the house, Isaac cleaned the bathroom and folded laundry while I did the vacuuming (with our new vacuum!!!). We then went to work decorating our Christmas tree.

I had to get it juusst right.

Olive was in her most festive sweater!

Twas the perfect evening indeed and I woke up to the perfect breakfast this morning as well. Zaydie’s Granola contacted me about trying out some of their locally made (in Richmond!!) granola. Of course, I wanted to try this granola- who wouldn’t?

Shelley and Janice graciously sent me two bags to try- the Almond Blueberry and the Walnut Cranberry. I decided to open the Almond blueberry first and it went straight on top of my chia seed oats this morning.

I love the real dried blueberries and large chunks of roasted almonds. Like the bag suggests, this granola is sweet, but not too sweet. I also like how short the ingredient list is!! (Rolled oats, almonds, honey, dried blueberries, canola, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla.) It doesn’t get much simpler than that folks!

If you’re in Richmond I highly recommend checking Zaydie‘s out. It’s a great product and it awesome when you can support local producers!! Here’s where you can find it.

Alright, sorry this is short and sweet, but I’m off to a PHISH show in the wet and cold weather. Wish me luck!
