Having a Chef Sleep Over…

by Eating Bird Food on April 19, 2010

is never a bad idea! Especially if you take him to Whole Food’s and he cooks you a lovely meal!

One of Isaac’s good friends, who happened to be staying with us this weekend, is a chef at Dove Tail, a three star restaurant in NYC. Unfortunately I’ve never been there, but if I’m ever in NYC I’d absolutely love to go on a Monday night for their Vegan/Vegetarian Menu.

So like any good friends would do, we took the chef to Whole Foods. He picked out the freshest looking fish and came up with an idea for dinner right there on the spot.

The end result:

Roasted Dover Sole rolled and placed upon a fried potato nest, topped with tangerine segments, Picholine olives and alfalfa sprouts. Finished off with a sprinkle of Matte (tea) spice with a base dressing of curried Greek yogurt.

I wanted to be part of dinner so I decided to make a nice veggie side dish inspired by M Cafe’s Kale with Spicy Peanut Sauce.

I’d mentioned to Lynn that I loved the kale with peanut sauce that I tried at M Cafe while in L.A., she sent me this video and I came up with my own version of the recipe. I’m saving the recipe for a guest post I’m doing so I’ll be sure to let you know when it posts!

Sunday morning I had a Chocolate Cherry Bomb in a bowl and topped it with a little Zaydie’s.

I finally found frozen cherries (thank’s Whole Foods) so I was able to follow the recipe to a T, only no hemp seeds because I’m all out. :/ The smoothie was “da bomb”, per the usual. I loved eating it like soup – it takes long and fills me up more than sipping it quickly through a straw.

For lunch I made a huge salad with spring mix, plain herbed fu’, red onion, raw shrooms, cabbage, cucumbers, broccoli, and sprouts.

I topped it with some left over peanut dressing from the kale and it was amazing. So so tasty.

After joking with the Fitnessista on twitter about wanting her to train me, I left for my first personal training session at my gym. It went well- I told the trainer my goals and he showed me exercises that will help me reach them while also demonstrating the proper form for each exercise. This was the most help part, as I realized that I wasn’t doing all my exercises with the most accurate form. I’m already sore today!!!!

I packed a PB&J on Rudi’s Spelt Ancient Grain bread for the car ride to the services for my aunt.

The bread is buttery, yet seedy and soft. This little gem was the perfect thing to hold me over and keep my happy while in traffic. :)

Today is going to be a long day so I better get going. Tell your family you love them today and have a great one!

Oh-la-leh and Free Yoga

by Eating Bird Food on January 21, 2010

I managed to pry myself out of bed for an early gym visit this morning. I did 20 minutes of cardio, shoulders, chest, triceps, and some abs. I was starving when I came home and the fastest thing I could throw together ended up being a bowl of kashi go lean, almond milk and 1/2 of a sliced banana.

While at work I had a clementine for a snack. One reason to like winter- clementines are in season. They’re so delicious!

I took my break for lunch late and got a little extra walking in by going to the post-office to ship a package for work before heading home. I made myself one of my all-time favorite sandwiches. A traditional PB and J.

Montana Gold Sunflower Whole Wheat bread with Swanton strawberry olallieberry jam and better n pb. The jar of strawberry olallieberry was a gift I bought Isaac when I was at the San Fran Farmer’s Market for Foodbuzz. Although I had never heard of Olallieberry (pronounced oh-la-leh berry) the name caught my eye and I couldn’t pass it up. I now know that olallieberry looks like an elongated blackberry but is actually a cross between a youngberry and a loganberry. I guess there are a lot of berry crosses out there as I’d never heard of these berries either, both of which are blackberries hybrids as well.

This sandwich was exactly what I wanted for lunch and I absolutely loved the whole sunflower seeds in the bread!

I didn’t have to worry about dinner as I had a lovely bowl of homemade soup waiting for me when I got home. Isaac brought home butternut squash and mushroom soup that one of this co-workers made from ingredients in her garden.

Edible

October 28, 2009

Last night Isaac and I planned to cook dinner together. I went straight to the gym after work and when I arrived home he had done much of the chopping and had even started the process of cooking a “surprise.” The surprise ended up being roasted butternut squash, unpeeled, cut in quarters, and coated with [...]
