This Week at Casa de EBF

by Eating Bird Food on August 5, 2011

Yesterday was my Friday because Isaac and I are headed North for a friend’s wedding today. This is super exciting because I loove long weekends (and weddings are fun too)! Yippee.

More on the weekend later (aka tomorrow) – today I’ll share with you some eventful things that took place this week.

Olive got her hair did.

She wasn’t in the mood for photos so she was giving me the evil eye. I love it when she gets her hair cut because she looks like a puppy again so I made her do a photo shoot anyway.

She still loves me. :)

As you already know, I made a batch of spicy pickled cucumbers this week. What you don’t know is that we ate them all in less than two days so I made another batch. As expected, the second batch was devoured as well. At that point I figured it was time to move on to another veggies and decided to make pickled eggplant with basil.

This was another recipe from the The Joy of Pickling and it turned out to be delish. I think I might start pickling everything.

I also got my hands on Mama Pea’s new cookbook, Peas and Thank You – Simple Meatless Meals the Whole Family Will Love.

This makes me so happy because I’ve been anticipating its arrival for months. I haven’t had a chance to try any of the recipeas yet, but I’m definitely excited to get in the kitchen and make some.

And last night we went to Mekong, a Vietnamese restaurant here in Richmond that’s known for its vast beer selection. They’re having a month long 16th anniversary celebration with special beers on tap each Thursday in August. Last night was the first and featured Beligan-style sour ales. Isaac is a beer lover so we tried a lot of the different types – including some that were way too sour for my taste. I liked the ones that weren’t soo sour, like the BFM 2009 Abbey de St Bon Chien. This one was cherry based so it was sour but had a hint of sweetness as well.

To go along with all the sour ales, there was cake.

Two huge cakes, flavored with beer. What else? The chocolate cake had Southern Tier’s Mocha stout with a raspberry filling and the white cake had Buffalo Bill’s Orange Cream Ale, fresh oranges and “Beer is the Answer” written on it. :)

I had a bite of each and both were delicious. I loooved the chocolate!

Speaking of chocolate cake, this week was also week 11 of my 12 week Body for Life training plan. I’m excited to share my process and thoughts on the plan soon!

Okay, we’re off to celebrate. See you soon!

River Rat

by Eating Bird Food on June 14, 2011

The past couple days have been beautiful here in Richmond. Instead of temps in the 90′s we’ve been enjoying low 80′s and it’s been absolutely wonderful. Being stuck indoors on beautiful days like this hurts my soul so when Isaac mentioned going to the James river with friends after work yesterday I was totally game.

We go to the river frequently, but Olive had never been so we contemplated leaving her at home. Ultimately we decided the river wouldn’t be that busy on a Monday night and that she should come along. I’m glad we did, because she loved it and SWAM for the first time ever!

We weren’t expecting her to get in because she’s kind of a Ms. Priss (i.e. she jumps over rain puddles as to not get wet) and she’s never been around water besides the bath tub.

She was a little apprehensive at first but started to walk in on her own.

Dad coaxed her in a little further.

And she was off. Well, not entirely. We still had the leash on her so she didn’t float down stream but she was swimming!

I was so proud. :)

She got out and looked like a little river rat. (And smelled like one too).

But I was still proud…

Isaac gave her a bath when we got home because she stunk to high heaven. <– Totally a one liner from my mom!

I’m sure no one is going to think this is as cute as I did, but I thought it was good enough to share considering if she was a baby (which she is to me) this would totally go in the baby book. :)

I also have a few updates:

  • The Richmond Vegetarian Festival is this Saturday at Bryan Park from 12-6PM. Even if you’re not a veggie you should check it out. There’s some great vendors this year and the food is always delicious! I’ll be volunteering at the speaker’s tent so feel free to stop by and say hi.
  • I’m attending the Healthy Living Summit in August AND I’m a panelist for the Rising Above Negativity session with Julie, Heather and Courtney. This is my first ever speaking engagement so I’ve nervous but also super excited!
  • Lastly, don’t forget to register to win a copy of The Eat Clean Diet Cookbook 2 – the giveaway ends Friday.

Chocolate Dipped Coconut Kind of Day

April 7, 2011

Thank you for all the supportive feedback on my scoliosis story. I re-read it today and realized it was kind of long and wordy. Sorry about that, I just wanted to put it all out there in one spot. I’ll make this post short and sweet to make up for it… Today started out with [...]

Treadmill Workouts, Lounging and Yogurt

January 22, 2011

Yippee for Saturday being here! This morning I woke up naturally at 8. It’s amazing how much better I feel if I get to wake up on my own instead of a being awoken by a beeping alarm clock. Amazing! I lounged around the house for a bit, ate breakfast (egg, Ezekiel toast, and veggie [...]
