Rawsome Shrooms

by Eating Bird Food on April 17, 2010

While in CA I had the pleasure of meeting and sharing a meal with two true raw foodists that have been so for over 10 years. They’re the early adapters, if you will, who started doing the raw thing before it was even popular. The meal we had was amazing and they were kind enough to share some ideas/recipes with me as well. They mentioned a method of “uncooking” shrooms that I knew I needed to create at home.

I’m a mushroom lover so I eat them raw all the time – on salads or dipped in hummus, but marinated and dehydrated mushrooms are even better.

Marinating

This creamy white mustard is another thing that my raw friends introduced me to and it’s amazing. I’m not even a big mustard fan, I’m more of a honey mustard kind of girl, but this type had cider vinegar which gives it less of a mustard seed flavor and more sweetness. I’m a fan.

And, just in case you’re not familiar with tamari, it’s just wheat-free sauce soy sauce. :)

Rawsome Shrooms

  • 1 lb. small mushrooms (button, crimini, baby portobella)
  • 4 tbsp tamari
  • 1 tbsp. True Natural Taste creamy white mustard
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced

Wash or brush off the mushrooms then quarter the larger mushrooms, half the medium sized, and do nothing with the small little babies. Put the mushrooms in a good sized bowl. In a small bowl whisk together the tamari and mustard, add the garlic, and pour the mixture over the mushrooms. Stir to ensure all the mushrooms are covered with the sauce and let them marinate for at least 20 minutes.

Spread the marinated mushrooms onto the paraflexx/telefexx sheet making sure there’s enough space between the shrooms to give them room to breathe. Dehydrate on 115° for 2 hours. Take them out and enjoy – just try not to eat them all at once.

These little morsels are meaty and oh so tasty. You’re non-raw, non-vegetarians friends will love em!

I’ve been snacking on them as is or using them as a topping on salad. I’m hoping to save a few to put into a home made veggie burger. Although, I’m not sure that’s going to be possible with the way I’ve been eating them. :)

Spring mix, cabbage, cucs, local herbed tofu, shrooms, and TJ’s Goddess Dressing aka best store bought dressing!

The weather has been amazing here today so after spin I did a little cleaning then played putt-putt golf with Isaac and some friends. It’s been a relaxing day. Tomorrow and Monday are the services for my aunt so I may or not be posting. We shall see.

I hope you are having a great weekend.

Farmer’s Markets Rock

by Eating Bird Food on November 7, 2009

Foodbuzz Day 2 started off on the right foot!

I joined Tina, Kath, Meghann, Sabrina, Shannon, and Emily for a nice run along the San Francisco Bay.

The sun was just coming up and the weather was perfect for a morning workout.

After heading back to the hotel room I made my way over to the Ferry Marketplace and Farmer’s Market.

The market was so extensive – I walked around with these lovely ladies:

We spent over and hour just browsing and sampling.

I snacked on some fresh grapes…

IMG_2336.JPG

And took shots of all the cool produce. I was impressed with the variety of mushrooms they had.

A HUGE procini mushroom. (TWSS)

Cauliflower mushrooms and sea beans… who knew these existed?

IMG_2338.JPG

I could smell this lavender from a great distance away. It smelled a-mah-zing!

Pretty flowers..

I made a couple purchases- something for Isaac (it’s a surprise!) and some dry grapes for myself.

IMG_2344.JPG

I’d never seen dried grapes before and was wondering, “What’s the difference between a dried grape and a raisin!” Apparently the variety of grapes used to make raisins are much sweeter than the variety used to make dry grapes. Although, these jumbo golden thompsons were still sweet and delicious.

I bought some St. Benoit Lemon myers yogurt for breakfast.

How cute is this porcelain container. The coolest part is that you put a $1.25 deposit down for the container and if you bring it back to their stand after eating, the next week, or take it to a local Whole Food’s you get the deposit back!

I topped mine with a few dried nectaries and dry raisins. Perfect market breakfast!

I was so impressed with this market- I would love to have the variety of fresh, local produce and food products as my disposal. San Francisco knows how to do a Farmer’s Market. That fo sure! :)

Post morning actives took place, including a huge tasting pavilion, tons of wine, beer, and food, AND my recipe demo for the Nature’s Pride Bread Company!! I’m off to get ready for tonight’s festivities (gotta go primp), but I will definitely be posting all about my experience as an bread ambassador asap,

I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend.

Berry Bounty

May 20, 2009

Today went by really quickly at work because things were busy. At lunch I ran by the post office and ran home. I only had time to prep my salad so I decided just to take it back to the office and eat at my desk- which apparently is the worst idea germ wise. The [...]

Another BAD day at the office

July 9, 2008

I would like to tell you that the reason I had another bad day at the office was because I went in to work today and that my laptop didn’t work because of the coffee spillage. Unfortunately, it was a very bad, terrible, no good day because I got laid off work and was asked [...]
