Ukrops Monument Ave 10K Race Recap

by Eating Bird Food on March 28, 2010

Yesterday was the big day! The Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K and my first road race since the knee injury.

Despite closing down Starbucks with Ashley on Friday night, I woke up bright and early ready for the race. Before leaving the house I defrosted a VitaMuffin VitaTop for a little pre-race fuel.

IMG_3605.JPG

This was my first time having one without heating it up in the toaster oven and I loved how soft it ended up being. Although, perhaps I should have heated it up because it was COLD outside.

IMG_3606.JPG

See how bundled up the man on the right is? He was smart, as it was around 30 degrees this morning. I was kicking myself for leaving my hat and gloves at home…

I met up with the bootcamp babes for a group picture before the race.

IMG_3611.JPG

We all trained for the race together and made shirts for the big day. So fun!!

Some other before shots were also taken:

Rebecca, a friend of mine and another bootcamp babe and I.

Anna, the fearless leader of the Bootcamp Babes and I.

After the photos we headed over to the starting line. As expected, it was super crowded.

IMG_3613.JPG

I missed my wave and had to start a few waves behind schedule, which was fine because the chip doesn’t start timing you until you cross the starting line.

IMG_3614.JPG IMG_3615.JPG

I ran most of the race alone, but the lovely scenery, rockin’ bands, crazy costumes, screaming fans, kept me fully occupied. I also wore my ipod to keep me motivated during points in the race when there wasn’t a band around. Which actual wasn’t every often!

IMG_3625.JPG

They don’t call it Monument Avenue for nothing!

IMG_3620.JPG

The weather may have been COLD, but the sun was shining and once I got started running I warmed right up.

IMG_3621.JPG

I love all the blossoming trees…. so pretty!

IMG_3623.JPG

Do you spy the band back there?

IMG_3624.JPG

Overall, the race went really well. My knee felt good through the entire thing and I stayed at what I felt like was a steady pace. (My watch wasn’t cooperating so I gave up on trying to track myself). So I finished the race strong without a clue as to how I did.

I later found out that I actually had a great time – it wasn’t as fast as last year, but that was expected considering I took off 6 months of running during 2009 and didn’t start running again until this January. Turns out it was better than my 2008 time but and only about 40 seconds more than my 2009 time.

The finish time of 53:13 means that my average pace was an 8:30 mile. Needless to say, this made me v. happy!

Here’s a post-race shot…

IMG_3617.JPG

I was all smiles with my Bondi Band still in place! Headbands never stay put on me so I was skeptical that this one would. But just as Ashley suggested, this one did! It also kept the sweat out of my face and eyes. I think I love this little band! Thanks again Ashley for introducing me to it!!

For some reason I’m not usually thirsty (nor do I want to waste time) during 5K and 10K races so I only stopped at one of the four-five water stations. Of course, I was parched at the finish line so I grabbed a bottle of water and made my way to the Food Station.

IMG_3616.JPG

This year’s options weren’t as good as I remember them being in year’s past – Powerade, bananas, and plain bagels – not too exciting. :( Typically there’s at least 3 different bagel flavors to choose from and a variety of fruit. I grabbed a banana and went on my way.

The cool part is that Ukrop’s had food tables set up with samples of some fun products. (Maybe this is why the food station lacked pizazz?)

IMG_3618.JPG

These options were more up my alley.

IMG_3619.JPG

After grabbing some snacks I went back to the finish line to cheer on other boot camp babes as they finished the race. While cheering I snacked on my banana, stretched, and chatted with a friend (Hi, Bethany!!). I ended up walking the 2 miles back to my house. It was good to keep my legs moving and I was able to walk along the race course and cheer all the runners and walkers on. The only set back was that my body temperature had cooled down and I was wet with sweat. This made for frigid walk back. I was so happy to be greeted by this flowering little Bradfod Pear that Isaac planted in our front yard a couple years ago.

IMG_3628.JPG

I went directly to the shower and the warm water never felt so good!

My swag.

IMG_3629.JPG

After defrosting/showering I decided to refuel with a nutrient packed green smoothie.

IMG_3630.JPG

Green Goddess Smoothie

  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 5 Brazil nuts
  • 1 tbsp. chia seeds
  • 1/2 tbsp. maca powder
  • 2 big handfuls of fresh spinach

I packed all my things and took this yummy drink with me on the road to visit my mom, my sister and her family. I hung out with them last night and I’m here at my sister’s house now! It’s been a busy, but fun packed weekend!

Also, I have to note that hanging out with Ashley on Friday night was a total blast. We had a ton to chat about – she’s such a cool person and we have a lot in common! Hopefully I’ll get to visit her in Florida sometime soon?!? I love meeting up with other bloggers because even though it’s blind dateish, you already feel like you know the person, plus you both have a food blog so of course, you have similar interests!!

Happy Sunday my friends – enjoy your day!

Bootcamp Babes

by Eating Bird Food on March 7, 2010

Wow! It was beautiful here this weekend. I’m so ready for more sunshine – I really hope it wasn’t just a tease. Anyone else feel me? I know these girls loved basking in the sun today, just like two little lizards.

IMG_3765.JPG

Olive had a friend staying over for the weekend – meet Sabra, Isaac’s family’s dog. They’re a riot together – Olive’s still a pup so she pesters Sabra to play all day long. Sabra’s an old woman and just wants to sleep.

After waking at 7AM I decided to be productive and headed to the gym and grocery store. I was going to eat breakfast when I got home, but once my feet hit the floor I realized I was hungry so I had a toasted Sandwich Round with homemade apple butter. I ate that up and then headed out the door. 40 minutes on the stationary bike while reading The Help, shopping at Ellwoods and Kroger, and a little core conditioning were all done before 10AM! I had a few samples at Ellwoods and grabbed a coffee with soy milk. These tasty treats kept me full until well after 12 when I finally decided to whip up a little lunch.

An apple with cinnamon and maca powder.

IMG_3776.JPG

And a bowl of homemade (by me!?!) yogurt topped with sliced bananas, Zaydie’s cranberry walnut granola, and a drizzle of honey.

IMG_3772.JPG

Inspired by Andrea, I took on the challenge of using my food dehydrator to make my own yogurt. 1 tbsp. of Greek yogurt, 3 1/2 cups of milk, and 5 hours of incubation gave me a mason jar full of delicious yogurt.

IMG_3760.JPG

It came out a bit runny so I strained it through some cheese cloth and it turned out thick and tasty. Quite successful for my first attempt! I’m already excited to make another batch. More photos next time – promise! In the meantime, if you’re interested in making your own yogurt, you should check out this website – it explains how to make regular, Greek, soy, and raw yogurt with or without a dehydrator!!

Later in the afternoon I attended a screen printing party.

IMG_3782.JPG

The boot-camp group that I’m part is running the local 10k this month so we made t-shirts to wear!

IMG_3779.JPG

How cute is that!

And what’s a party without some munchies?

IMG_3778.JPG

I enjoyed some veggies, grapes, and a couple crackers while chatting it up with the ladies.

Pink camo overload!!!

IMG_3784.JPG

After the party I hurried home so that Isaac and I could enjoy the last hour of sunshine by taking a nice little walk. We worked up quite an appetite…. which worked out perfectly because I had a delicious dinner planned.

Roasted broccoli, spelt burgers, and raw slaw.

IMG_3786.JPG

I used Angela’s In A Jiffy Spelt Veggie Burgers recipe, but made a few changes worth noting.

Spelt Veggie Burger

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked chick peas
  • 2 baby carrots
  • 1/2 large onion, peeled and chopped up into large pieces
  • 1/2 Red pepper, chopped into large pieces
  • 2 rings jalapeno pepper
  • 1/2 t fresh oregano
  • 1/2 t dried basil
  • 1/2 t cumin
  • 1/4 t fine grain sea salt
  • tiny dash of cayenne
  • 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped
  • 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 T chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup spelt flour (or flour of your choice)

Directions: Preheat oven to 375F. Place all ingredients except the seeds and flour into a food processor. Process until mixture is blended well, stopping to scrape sides if necessary. Remove mixture and place into a large bowl. Add seeds and stir well. Add the spelt flour (or flour of your choice) in 1/4 cup increments, stirring well until blended. Shape patties and bake on a baking stone (or lightly greased cookie sheet) for 15 minutes at 375F, flip and bake for another 10 minutes. My batch made 6 regular sized patties and one small patty and they were FABULOUS.

IMG_3785.JPG

And the raw slaw, inspired by Ellwoods, was also delicious!

Raw Slaw

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups cabbage, chopped
  • 1/4 of a large red onion, thinly sliced

Dressing:

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar (I used Braggs)
  • 1 tbsp. pure maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp. poppy seeds

Directions: Mix cabbage and red onion in a large bowl. In a separate small bowl whisk the dressing ingredients and pour it over the salad. Mix well and serve.

I’m off to soak up the last few hours of the weekend. Hope you had a good one!!
