Newness!

by Eating Bird Food on June 12, 2011

I’m a total sucker for trying new-to-me products, especially when they’re from a brand I already love. Recently I’ve tried two that are worth highlighting.

The first is one that involves two of my favs – coconut and sparkling water.

LaCroix Coconut!

I saw this little gem at Target over the weekend and couldn’t help but to pick up a case. (Target never fails at getting me to buy more than I came for.) This time the additional item was well worth the impulse buy as I’m a huge fan of LaCriox, particularly the Grapefruit, Mixed Berry and Lime flavors. Sparkling water is great when you want something with a little more flavor than regular water. Plus the carbonation leaves you feeling full.

I tried the water yesterday and it’s really good! It provides a hint of coconut that is perfect for warm summer days. I could see this being a great base for cocktails or mocktails. Might just have to try that idea out soon. :)

**After checking out the LaCriox FB page, it looks like the coconut flavor was released this month and sold exclusively at Target!

The other item is of the Indian variety and from Trader Joe’s. I love TJ’s for certain things – including their frozen fruits and veggies, edamame, canned beans, dried fruit and nuts, nut butters, bagged greens, etc. I try to stay away from their packaged meals because they tend to pack a big sodium punch. But sometimes one of their frozen meals catches my eye and I can’t resist.

This time it was the Baigan Bharta – eggplant curry.

One night last week Isaac wasn’t home so I cooked the baigan bharta on the stove and added a big hunk of Twin Oaks tofu for some protein. The packaged had three 100 calorie servings and I ended up eating all 3 as my dinner with the tofu. Overall, the flavor was really good and it tasted similar to the baigan bharta I’ve had at Indian restaurant, but per the usual, the dish was a little on the salty side. I’d buy it again because I really liked how easy it was to prepare and the authentic flavor, but it wouldn’t become a weekly grocery list addition.

In other news, yesterday was spent celebrating with my fam:

Today I’m off to hang out with Isaac’s family. His grandparents are in town and we’re going to have a little breakfast with them. Have an enjoyable Sunday friends!

Merry Merry Christmas

by Eating Bird Food on December 25, 2009

Isaac, Olive, and I have been on a world wind tour over the past few days traveling to see family for the holidays. We stayed at my Dad’s place on Wednesday night after visiting my Uncle at the hospital and then traveled to visit the rest of my family. We stopped for a quick lunch at Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

I ordered my favorite- the Health Nut- Blueberries, Mango, Banana, Almonds, and Whey or Soy protein. I ordered it with whey protein and NO Turbinado. Did you know that they put a 1/4 cup of turbinado sugar in this smoothie if you don’t request otherwise? It’s just crazy to me because the fruits are already so sweet- no extra sugar is even needed! Twas filling and delicious, so much so I’ve recreated it before.

Last year I changed up my standard family Christmas traditions and this year was no different. Isaac and did lots of visiting and then headed home to spend Christmas eve night at home together. Before we headed home we stopped to grab a bite for dinner. There weren’t many restaurants open but luckily we saw the red open light glaring in the GURU Indian restaurant window.

I ordered the Baigan Bharta, a spicy Indian eggplant curry dish.

Basmati rice.

And roti- made with whole wheat flour. It seemed baked rather than fried and had no oil on it whatsoever. I was so pleased with the way it was made!

This was probably the best Indian food we’ve ever had. We even sent compliments to the chef! I told Isaac that Indian food on Christmas eve has to be a new tradition. I’m already excited for next year! :)

I’m interested to know, what are your Christmas/Christmas eve traditions? Do you still continue doing them or have your changed your traditions after getting older?

Last but not least, Merry Christmas to you and yours! I hope you are having a relaxing and enjoyable day with family and friends!

Olive was so pooped from visiting all day she was happily laying on her back (something she never does) and letting me make her dance for my Nanny and Mom.
