Happy LeftOvers Day!

by eatingbirdfood on November 28, 2008

Am I right or am I right????

For Thanksgiving I went with Isaac to his aunt and uncle’s house! His aunt prepared the turkey and all the sides – and we brought desserts and some vegetarian options. I really enjoyed being with his family, but I did miss my fam and the traditional items that my mom makes every year like sweet potato casserole and broccoli cheese casserole! Another thing is that I couldn’t really take pictures because I had a feeling that me snapping photos of the food would have left me with a lot of explaining to do without much understanding on the other end. I can’t wait until I have a table that seats more than 2 people and I can host a Thanksgiving meal at my casa with all the food photos my little heart desires!

Anyway, I wanted to bring some protein for us non-turkey eaters- Isaac’s mom (Ellen) and I. And since I have heard horror stories about Tofukery  I ended up buying a Celebration Roast, which is vegetarian grain meat. It was YUMMY and the the ingredient list isn’t crazy: Filtered water, vital wheat gluten, expeller pressed safflower oil, naturally flavored yeast extract, barley malt, butternut squash, organic wheat flour, granulated garlic, apples, mushrooms, onion powder, garlic, organic wheat flakes, yellow pea flour, lemon juice, red wine, tomato paste, irish moss (sea vegetable) extract, black pepper, rubbed sage, rosemary, spices, natural liquid smoke and paprika. I also made the roasted root veggies I was thinking of making last week, which was basically just sweet poatotes, turnips, parsnips, carrots, onions, and garlic with olive oil, S&P, rosemary! SO DELISH!! And since I didn’t get any photos yesterday. Here are the left overs all packed up in tupperware:

My favorite part was defintely DESSERT-  I totally went all out and ate my fair share!! I am lucky enough to have one quick snap that Isaac took when the desserts were being put out.

Isaac’s Grandma’s Apple Pie, Ellen’s Brown Rice Crispy treats made with brown rice syrup instead of marshmallows- these babies are incredidably easy to make and soo good, and my Pumpkin Pie. The only thing that is missing is Ellen’s Chocolate Chip cake, which was further right on the table.

Since there is a lack of photos for this Holiday, here’s one of Isaac and myself.

Happy Thanksgiving YALL! I’m feeling southern today. Have fun shopping if you are brave enough to be out there with the crazies!

A la Mode

by eatingbirdfood on August 12, 2008

First things first, I’m done housesitting so no more of these little guys:

Yesterday was Isaac’s first day back at home for good because he is done traveling to and from training. I’m excited to have him here from now on. As a treat I made homemade apple pie served with vanilla icecream. The apple pie turned out okay, but the crumble topping turned out to be less crumbly because as a good baker always does, I softened the butter… and not just soften for minute like I usually do, I let it sit out for about an hour so it was almost mushy. Too bad that with this particular crumb topping you should use your baking butter very hard (fresh from the fridge) to get the correct consistency. Oh well, it should still taste the same because it’s the same ingredients, just without the crumble. It’s my first time making this… as also demonstrated by the fact that I bought a graham cracker crust instead of a frozen pie crust because I didn’t read the directions carefully enough. So I had to return that to the grocery store mid way through the cooking process… don’t judge me on this one, I am going to make it again sometime and the crumble topping is going to work!

Here is a quote that goes along with the post because I love Little Miss Sunshine and ice cream

Frank: Actually Olive, ‘a la mode’ in French translates literally as ‘in the fashion.’ A la mode [French accent]. ‘Mode’ is derived from latin ‘modus’ do or proper–
Richard: Frank, shut up. Olive can I tell you a little something about ice-cream?
