Selba, Richmond – Healthy and Flavorful

by Eating Bird Food on February 21, 2012

Not sure what’s going on here in Richmond, but I feel like I hear about new restaurants popping up almost every day now. Not that I’m complaining, there are just so many places to check out it’s hard to keep up!

One restaurant that’s been my list for a little while now is Selba, a relatively new spot near my house that focuses on making food healthy and flavorful as well as sourcing ingredients from local vendors. When Stephanie asked me if I would be up for checking out Selba for dinner with her I was more than game. Girls dinner on a Tuesday night at a fun restaurant = yes please!

Their menu is pretty expansive and features numerous vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. <– They even have a separate menu for these three dietary preferences/needs.

Steph and I decided to share a few things and both get a salad. This ended up being a great idea because we had more than enough food for the two of us.

To start – a salad with roasted baby beets, arugula and a lemon-yogurt dressing.

Roasted Beet Salad - Selba

I loved how light and fresh the dressing was and the beets were roasted perfectly – i couldn’t stop eating them. I was really impressed with the flavor of the salad and how large the portion size was considering it was only $6.

We also split a small plate of the chickpea-beer battered brussels sprouts, which were served with a smoked tomato and English mustard remoulade.

Fried Brussels Sprouts - Selba

I’m not sure why, maybe because I don’t eat fried things very often or perhaps it was the beer in the batter. but these tasted like corn dogs to me. These were tasty and I liked that they were battered with chickpea flour, but I’m not sure I would order them again just because they were a little on the saltly/heavy side.

For the main meal, we spilt the vegetarian special which was a roasted poblano pepper stuffed with tofu and veggies and topped with manchego cheese and a cilantro creme fraiche.

Roasted Poblano pepper

Sooo good!

I can’t member what the little crispy things were on the top of the pepper but they seemed like tiny little sweet potato fries to me. :) The pepper was roasted but still had a nice crispness to it and the tofu veggie filling was extra flavorful, but not spicy. I definitely enjoyed this guy.

Overall, Selba made a great first impression on both Stephanie and I!.The service was awesome, the atmosphere was nice and relaxing for a Tuesday evening and the food was really really good! I’m excited to have another restaurant nearby with healthy and delicious foods. I’m sure I’ll be visiting again soon, especially since I brought the leftover brussels sprouts home and they were devoured by Isaac in less than 60 seconds. Obviously, Isaac needs to try Selba too. :)

After all the eating out I’ve been doing recently, I think it’s time to make something tasty at home tomorrow night… perhaps a new tempeh recipe?!?

Last but not least, thanks for all the wonderful feedback on my last post about the benefits of apple cider vinegar I definitely want to do more informative posts like that in the future because I know they are super helpful to you all.

Have a great Wednesday. Fingers crossed that Modern Family is new tonight!

I’m sad I wasn’t able to go! But I hit up Xtras for 1/2 wine night with a friend and it was fantastic! (I’d only previously been to Xtras for $10 bottles of champagne nights… do you see this trend?) Anyways, the food there is good too. We should totally have a foodie get together there!

And Selbas is on my list of places to try!

I was bummed you couldn’t come as well. We’ll definitely have to plan another foodie outing soon. I really like Xtra’s as well. Their grilled tofu salad is really tasty and 1/2 price wine night sounds right up my alley!

I have been wanting to try Selba! I am so burnt out from eating out lately with so many celebrations and get togethers, but their food looks so much better than what I’ve been putting in my body lately.

I have a love hate relashionship with the fried food, sometimes I crave it I it is great, sometimes it just makes me feel heavy and off.

This place looks absolutely marvelous! I just ran across your blog randomly and It’s inspired me. I’ve been vegetarian for almost a year and I’ve been looking at stepping into a healthier more vegan based diet. I love the pictured of the food from this place, it’s so hard to find a good, healthy restaurant these days!
