Cherry Protein Pop’ems and an Eat Clean Giveaway

by Eating Bird Food on June 14, 2011

Given the number of times I’ve mentioned Tosca Reno and her books, you’re bound to know that I have a mini crush on her. She’s a normal woman who was unhappy with her weight and decided to do something about it! Since losing the weight and getting into the best shape of her life, she’s been dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle and helping others, particularly women, learn how to eat clean and get into shape. This is something I truly admire and is the main reason I started Eating Bird Food – to share my story and help motivate others!

Back to Tosca. Her original book, The Eat Clean Diet, and the next release, The Eat Clean Diet Recharged are both great starting points if you’re looking for a basic program to help with losing weight and getting into shape. (Both are listed in the EBF Amazon Store).

The Eat Clean principles are pretty simple and require small changes that are meant to be embedded into your lifestyle rather than temporary. They include things like drinking lots of water, eating breakfast everyday, cutting out processed foods, eating 6 small meals comprised of a lean protein and complex carb, lots of fresh veggies/fruit and proper portion sizes. I’m a huge fan of the guidelines and try to follow them whenever possible.

Recently I was sent Tosca’s latest book to review, The Eat Clean Diet Cookbook 2. It features over 150 new recipes and includes topics such as:

  • A “How-To” for fish: Shopping, Choosing, Cooking a fish
  • Vegetarian Done Right: “How-To be a healthy vegetarian” and ensure you get enough of the right kind of foods in the best combinations to get the most nutrients, avoiding the risks
  • Summer Menus
  • Grilling Recipes
  • Tips for Your Best Beach Body
  • One-Dish & Easy Meals
  • Lunch outside the lunchbox
  • Family Staples Made Lean: Chicken Fingers, Pasta, Pizza, Hot dogs, Desserts, Drinks & More
  • Do It Yourself Sauces, Spreads & Salsas: BBQ and Cocktail Sauce, Pesto, Salad Dressing, Hummus, Croutons and more
  • Every type of food made “clean” from Mexican food to Italian or even American

The photos in the book are beautiful! This is a big plus for me because I’m a visual person and hate cookbooks with no photos. Even if my rendition of the dish never looks like the photo, I still want to have one. ;)

While browsing through the cookbook, I found a ton of new recipes I’m excited to try out! So excited in fact, I got started this past weekend by making the Cherry Protein Pop ‘Ems. I’m always looking for protein filled snacks that are a little on the sweet side and these sounded perfect.

I followed the recipe almost exactly but subbed a few ingredients based on what I had in the pantry. For instance, I used natural peanut butter instead of cashew butter. I couldn’t find unsweetened cherries so juice sweetened and cut the amount of honey down a bit. I also used vanilla protein powder instead of natural flavored.

These little pop’ems turned out great. I loved the tiny bits of crunch from the millet and chia seeds and the chewy sweetness of the dried cherries. Isaac and I polished them off in only a few short days. I already need to make another batch!

Speaking of batches. I received two copies of the Eat Clean Clean Diet Cookbook 2 and you have a chance to win one of them! Simply leave a comment telling me the one thing you do/should do to eat cleaner. You can get an additional entry by:

  • Becoming a fan of Eating Bird Food on Facebook and leaving a comment on this post to let me know you’ve done so.
  • Tweeting “I want to win @toscareno’s Eat Clean Diet Cookbook 2 from @eatingbirdfood http://bit.ly/j34Jel” and leaving a comment on this post to let me know you’ve done so.

The giveaway will end this Friday, June 17 and I’ll announce the winner over the weekend. Happy Tuesday!

I made these protein balls as a healthy snack for my dad to have at work. When he came home he told me that he and his co-workers loved them and that I must give him the recipe so that he can pass it along.

Of course I saved a few for my self. They sure are yummy!

One thing I do to eat cleaner is taking a trip to my local health food store to buy fresh groceries. Taking a trip to Whole Foods never fails to get my taste buds firing! It helps give me that extra motivation I need to continue eating healthy all week!

I was already a FB friend of yours, and proud of it. Haha. To eat cleaner, my hubby and I have adopted what we lovingly call a “pescatarian diet”. We have cut out all meat, relying on healthy, lean seafood for our “meaty proteins”. Also, we include 2-3 vegetarian nights where we focus on whatever produce is fresh & in season. Since I am still relatively new to clean eating, I would love a copy of the book to expand my knowledge & recipe base. Fingers crossed, adn as always, thanks for the amazing blog!

I have loved Tosca for about 5 years now and actually starting loving her more when I found out that she lives only 15 mins away from where I do (her original Eat-Clean Diet book was actually SHOT in one of my local grocery stores). My favourite concept of her ‘diet’ is to include protein with every small meal. Because of her, I started preparing few chicken breasts at the beginning of the week, always keeping egg whites on hand, and just becoming more aware of my meals! She has great concepts and I’m so happy you love her, too!

Hmm one clean food thing I try for every day is WATERWATERWATER- with lemon (all natural cleanser and flax seeds (2 tbsp daily). I love that Tosca is from Canada too :)

I try to start my bday with a “clean” meal. By starting my morning with a healthy and clean meal, it starts a precedent for the remainder of the day!

I’ve practically eliminated processed foods from my diet…if it doesn’t grow or has more than 7 ingredients (any of which i don’t recognize)…I put it down and get something else.

I start my day with a bowl of mashed bananas, oatmeal, and one of the Kashi go lean crunches with either skim milk or almond milk. Best part of my day!

Nadia June 15, 2011 at 12:49 pm

I’ve been having green smoothies in the morning and that having a serving of green veggies, fruit, and water first thing in the morning has been setting me up to just say no to processed! I alter that with overnight oatmeal with I’m lazy (I’ve been experimenting with brown flax seed and they make the oatmeal ready in less than 30 mins!) And I feel like committing to the farmer’s markets (Byrd House Market/Tricycles/South of the James!) and making sure I regularly stock up makes me want to eat up the veggies more than go out and eat food that’s not even good for me!

I try to eat as many fruits and veggies as possible. I can’t afford to buy all organics, but I do buy organic for fruits and veggies that are on the EWG’s “dirty dozen” list (apples, strawberries, spinach, peaches, etc.).

I’m a recent convert to the Eat Clean way. I’ve been eating much cleaner for the last 2 years and find I feel amazing! Just last week I did the cooler pack 1 of the eat clean diet and provided a few reviews in my blog (www.alifewithouticecream.com)

It was a great chance to incorporate even more clean eating habits into my lifestyle.

The one thing I know I need to give up to eat even more clean – Turkey Bacon… :)

I’ve just finished Tosca’s Book, “The Eat-Clean Diet for Family and Kids,” and have gotten my children into the habit of looking at the labels for foods they “think” they want me to purchase for them. I do NOT want my children to be obsessive about calories/weight, but I do want them to grow up and be conscious about what they’re putting into their God-given gifts of bodies. For example, my 7-year-old wants packaged fruit snacks. She looks at the ingredients list, and if there’s anything she cannot pronounce in it, she knows that it’s nothing her body needs, places it back on the shelf, and chooses the one that has few ingredients – ingredients that she recognizes, aka can pronounce.

I found you thru your Cinnamon Raisan Almond Butter recipe on Tasty Kitchen at ThePioneerWoman.com. I love eating cleaner and would really like to check out that recipe book! To eat cleaner I should spend more time cooking my meals and less time heating up frozen entrees, even if they are “organic.”
