My friend Amy does Light & Lean

by Eating Bird Food on March 5, 2011

Hi and Happy Saturday!

Most of you probably know I’m a huge fan of Amy’s products. I try my best to eat foods that are not packaged but sometimes that isn’t always possible and it’s nice to have a choice out there that is not only quick and convenient but also natural, organic, vegetarian and delicious. Amy’s does packaged foods in a way that makes them easy to support!

Some of my favorite Amy’s products have been featured on the blog many times including the:

*Many of the products above also come in a Light in Sodium variety so I try to choose that option when available.

Amy’s tries to accommodate different needs/special diets by offering options that are diary free, gluten free, lactose free, corn free, soy free, tree-nut free, vegan, no cholesterol, low-fat, or kosher – you just have to read the package to make sure the item you are buying has the correct symbols for your needs!

Just a few months ago Amy’s introduced a new line called Light & Lean with 4 frozen meals, each containing less than 300 calories, 5g fat, 590mg sodium and only 6 Weight Watcher Points in the PointsPlus program. The Light & Lean meals include: Black Bean and Cheese Enchilada, Soft Taco Fiesta, Spinach Lasagna, Pasta and Veggies. The folks at Amy’s graciously sent me a few coupons so I could try out the new line…

I found the Light & Lean meals at Kroger and picked up the one that sounded the best to me, which was the Black Bean and Cheese Enchilada.

This particular meal is gluten free, tree-nut free, low-fat and has organic black beans, tofu, brown rice, vegetables and cheese in an organic corn tortilla with a blend of tomatillo and ranchero sauces, with a side of organic brown rice with carrots and sweet corn. Nutrition facts: 240 calories, 4.5g fat, 480mg sodium, 4g fiber and 8g protein.

Friday I was busy at work so I ran home for a quick lunch and heated up this meal. I plated it so you could see the portion size. Plus it’s looks better than it did in the black plastic container. :)

The enchilada wasn’t soggy and had great flavor from the well-seasoned tofu/black bean mixture and the zesty tomatillo and ranchero sauces. I kept scraping the container to get every last bit of the sauce out when I was transferring it. :) I also really liked the brown rice side dish. I’ve always loved sweet corn and the mixture of the rice, corn and carrots was perfectly cooked- nice and fluffy.

Once again, Amy’s didn’t disappoint – I thought this meal was tasty and pretty filling for being a mere 240 calories!

Most traditional Amy’s products are on the healthy side and relatively low in calories, so the lower sodium count in the Light & Lean meals is the real winner. Some of their other meals contain quite a large amount of sodium so it’s nice to see the Light in Sodium varieties, including these Light & Lean meals.

Based on the taste of the black bean and cheese enchilada. I’m already excited to try out the others – particularly the Soft Taco Fiesta and the Spinach Lasagna. Of course, I’ll be sure to let you all know what I think.

Have you tried the new Light & Lean meals yet? Do you have any favorite Amy’s products. Hit me up in the comment section with your thoughts. :)

I’m off to an engagement party! Tomorrow’s a big day for EBF so I’ll be back with a fun surprise.

Oh Amy, how I love thee :)

I love her soups the best. For packed lunches, I throw in a little extra spice, nutritional yeast, and a handfull of frozen spinach to beef em’ up.

Wow, I had no idea that Amy’s had expanded to a “light” line. I am a huge fan of her products, so I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for them.

I have not tried Light and Lean yet, but I plan on it! My favorite Amy’s products are her cheeseless pizza (since I am lactose) and the tofu rice bowls. SO good!

I am totally in love with Amy’s product! I eat them every day during the work week – and when I was sick, I don’t think I would have eaten at all if I didn’t have an Amy’s option! I’ve tried the Light & Lean line too, and I think my favorite is the soft taco bowl – I like to add salsa or Red Hot and it is perfect!

I haven’t tried the Light n Lean stuff, but I LOVE Amy’s, especially the black bean enchiladas and the green chile tamales! Yummm.

I LOVE Amy’s dishes. The black bean and tofu enchiladas have always been a favorite, but recently I’ve discovered her pocket sandwiches. They’re like healthier, adult Hot Pockets, which I guiltily admit that I love. I hadn’t heard of Light and Lean, but I love the idea since some of the meals can be higher calorie than I prefer.

i was about to complain that i was jealous that you get interesting Light & veggie meals in the US and the range in the UK is rubbish.

But then i looked at Amy’s website & it said coming soon to the UK! so i shall sign up to the newsletter & pray that they start selling them somewhere i can get to easily & hopefully not just in somewhere like Wholefoods in London.

I’m in the same boat. While my wife and I don’t normally buy packaged stuff, this looks promising when in a pinch. Thanks!

I’m an Amy fan as well. Been getting the bean or cheese frozen burritos for a few years now. Great for last minute lunch packing for work and no leftovers from dinner. I did branch out and tried some of other frozen entreés and they were mighty tasty as well.

I’m so glad you reviewed this! For the past several months, I’ve been eating one of Amy’s GF enchilada meals that has 400 calories. Now I can shave some calories off my lunch and still avoid gluten. YAY!!

I love Amy’s products! I haven’t tried the light and lean ones yet, but her soups are hands-down the best ones out there. The ingredients are awesome!

I do want to try Amy’s products but I am turned off by the high sodium content. But I have no problem eating french fries…

You should check out some of the low sodium options. :)

Love Amy’s! I *did* used to think they were perfect until I reread some of the nutrition stats. The sodium is crazy high! Nice to hear they have light sodium varieties, hopefully I can find them at my grocery store.

TBH, I don’t really see the use for a Light & Lean line. It doesn’t seem like a big difference between the regular line (except for the sodium content) and this new one. One could already find plenty of lower cal alternatives within the line.

I LOVE LOVE Amy’s but always have to supplement them to get more food! I love their low sodium soups and frozen burritos. The Indian one is awesome and I just had the teriyaki for dinner!

Oh my gosh I’m so excited! I haven’t seen these in our grocery stores yet, but I’m definitely going to snag them when I do. I love Amy’s frozen meals but some of them are really high in fat. I’m really looking forward to trying some of these.

This is a good thing! I like their meals, but always found them too caloric so I will have to try these options.

My wife (www.healthyinCandyland.com) tries to avoid package food too. On the rare occasion that I am home alone with the kids and don’t have time to make quality meal, it would be nice to have a quick, yet healthy choice. Amy’s product sound like they fit that bill. I will have to give some of those a try.

It does seem like a great alternative for busy people, who are also looking out for healthier options. It looks a little different to the box ad, but I take your word for it that it was delicious. I’m def gonna look for them when we go grocery shopping this weekend.

Wow, I’ll have to keep an eye out for that. I’m down for anything that’s Weight Watchers friendly.
