D.C. For Less Than A Day

by Eating Bird Food on September 12, 2010

As I mentioned as I was signing off on my last post, Isaac convinced me at the last minute to go with him to Northern VA/D.C. for the night. All morning I kept thinking I should stay home, get laundry done, buy shoes for the wedding I’m in next weekend, clean the house, etc. but then something came over me and I decided to go. We’re home now and I’m so pumped that I ended up going- it was a blast!

First stop: Upperville, VA for to cheer on Isaac’s Ultimate Frisbee team.

Isaac is injured and couldn’t play with the team but the weather was gorgeous and we both had a good time hanging out on the sidelines.

After watching a few games we headed into D.C. to stay with one of Isaac’s friends from Montessori training, Micah, for the evening. By the time we arrived we were HUNGRY. Luckily Micah and Katherine (his GF) knew just the spot to take us.

Radius Pizza!

Isaac and I split the arugula salad with VA peaches, mint, feta and balsamic vinaigrette.

I really liked it. The arugula wasn’t overly spicy as I’ve experienced in the past and the peaches were a nice touch.

Once I saw the Fall Pizza (with heirloom kabocha pumpkin puree, feta, ricotta, caramelized onions, and mushrooms) I knew exactly what I wanted for dinner! I mean, how often is it that you see a pizza with kabocha pumpkin puree?!? The table all agreed that the Fall Pizza sounded amazing so we ordered a large to share.

I told you we were hungry.

O.M.G. – this pizza is quite possibly the best pizza I’ve ever had out at a restaurant!! The kabocha sauce paired with the caramelized onions, ricotta and feta was incredible. I want another slice right now!

Post dinner Micah and Katherine took us to a Mt. Pleasant party where we hung out until we couldn’t hold our eyes open any longer, then went home and crashed!

Today we woke up to a soggy D.C. as it rained quite hard throughout the night. We grabbed a cup of coffee and putzed around, then met up with one of Isaac’s Israeli friends who was in town visiting this week.

We grabbed lunch at Busboys and Poets.

I ordered the Spinach and Wheat Berry Salad with baby spinach, blueberries, mango, roasted almonds and caramelized onions tossed in a ginger sesame vinaigrette. It was super tasty!!

Isaac ordered a spicy bloody mary that came out with a celery cactus – I couldn’t resist photographing it.

We’re home from the whirl-wind trip. I think I’m going to hit up the gym, make some dinner and relax. Gotta get ready for another 4 day work week. I’m off this Friday because one of my best friends is getting married in WI! I can’t wait!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend as well.

Looks like a great day/night trip! And the eats look A+. I haven’t had a great restaurant meal in a while. Hmmph.
I made 2 of your recipes this weekend: pumpkin butter and apple butter. I’m planning on posting my photos of them momentarily. FALL IS HERE!

That wheatberry salad looks divine. I’ve always wanted to try kabocha.

That pizza sounds awesome. Reminds me of when I made a carrot sauce base for a pizza once. I love non-tomato sauce based pizzas. Now I want to buy squash and make squashy pizzas :D

What a great name for a pizza place!
Kabocha on a pizza sounds like a match made in heaven.

That pizza sounds perfect!!! Who would’ve thought you’d ever see that, right? I love when places seem to have been reading my mind.

XOXO

I love coming across unusual pizza combinations in restaurants!
Busboys and Poets – missing DC right now!

I ordered a pumpkin pizza last fall, and like you, I thought it was out of this world! Mouth-orgasm for sure! Thanks for sharing pictures of your delicious dinner, and all those frisbees reminded me of my freshmen year of college…so much fun! Have a great Monday love.

Bloody Marys have been floating all over blogland. Making me want to make a fresh squeezed one. Love the pics from DC, looks like a short and sweet trip.

The mountain of spinach (for your salad) looks SO yummy! The pizza has put me in Autumn mode for sure.

P.S.-
I made your hummus this weekend and it was fabulous! Thank you so much for that little tip. :)

That pizza sounds so delicious! Did the puree act as the sauce?

Enjoy your 4 day workweek!

Yup, the pumpkin puree was the sauce!

I admire your spontaneity with the trip! I always try to just “go somewhere on a whim” but than I think about all the things you mentioned… errands, laundry, etc. and I end up not going. I ALWAYS regret it in the long run. Life is too short to miss those opportunities : )

I agree. My house didn’t seem to miss me at all. :)

Ultimate frisbee! That was such a big thing in Michigan but it seems nonexistent here in NY. Also, that pizza sounds amazing. Feta on pizza is certainly one of the best toppings, but I’ve never thought of putting kabocha on one before!
