Relay Foods Winner and Fitness Magazine Dinner

by Eating Bird Food on August 23, 2010

Just as I was wrapping up a less than stellar week last Thursday, I found out that I had won the Relay Foods prize pack that was raffled off at the Carytown Watermelon Festival a few weeks ago. I don’t know what it is about that festival, but I always tend to win something there. I’m definitely not complaining because I’ve gotten a free haircut and free groceries over the past 2 years!

So, back to Relay Foods. They are an online grocer operating in both Charlottesville and Richmond that deliver groceries from local stores, farms, and restaurants. You place your order online and then pick it up at one of their convenient locations. The coolest part is that there is no delivery fee or subscription fee and the prices are the same as you’d pay in the store!

The raffled prize pack included a basket full of local goodies (which I should be getting this Monday) and a $50.00 gift certificate to try their service out. This totally brightened my day and I went straight to their website to find what I was going to spend my $ on. I was excited to see lots of local vendors: Marshall Farm’s Cheese (which is less than a mile from my childhood home), Twin Oaks Tofu, Montana Gold Bread, annaB’s Gluten Free, Polyface Farm, Gerharts Chocolate, etc. I also loved that there were plenty of organic items (thanks to Good Foods Grocery) and standard prices on everything.

I purchased a few items that I needed for a recipe that I wanted to make this weekend (more on that below) and also stocked up some of my standard items (almond milk, local tofu, beans and veggie broth). I also decided to try some local coffee and an agave based chipotle ketchup that caught my eye. Last but not least I spent a good chunk on the big bottle of Dr. Bronner’s – our favorite body wash.

I picked up my order at a location close to my home on Friday evening after work. It was really nice to have all my groceries in a bag, ready to go without having to step foot in a store. The other thing that is nice about Relay Foods is that you can get a bunch of products, from local vendors, without having to go running around town to several stores, the farmer’s market, and a coffee shop. Everything is conveniently located in one place – on their website. :)

Overall,  my experience with Relay Foods was great and I would definitely recommend checking them out. The only thing I think they can improve  is the search feature on the site – it often included things that were irrelevant, making it hard to find what I was actually looking for. Other than that, I loved it and can see how this service would be awesome for folks who loathe grocery shopping or simply don’t have a ton of time. I’m quite certain I will use their services again in the near future and if I didn’t love grocery shopping so much I’d be ordering from them all the time.

On Saturday night I took some of my Relay Foods goods and went to work preparing a delicious dinner using a recipe from the August issue of Fitness MagazineCurried Summer Vegetable Medley With Coconut Rice. I pretty much followed the recipe exactly, but made brown basmati rice instead of white and added a bit of cayenne pepper for some heat.

Here’s a photo recap of the preparation:

The only thing I will say about this recipe is that it definitely took me longer than 20 minutes to prep the ingredients – there were a lot of veggies to chop!

Wow, Fitness does it again! I’ve said it before, but all their recipes turn out to be winners!! I haven’t tried a bad one yet.

Curried Summer Vegetable Medley With Coconut Rice

The only disappointing thing is that Isaac wasn’t home to bask in the glory of our kitchen smelling like an Indian restaurant or to try this amazing dinner. Oh well, more leftovers for me. :)

So tell me, have you ever tried an online grocer?

Also, what’s your favorite magazine to find recipes in?

I remember when our local grocery store launched a new feature of ordering your items online and then having curbside pickup of all of your groceries. I don’t think it went off to well. I can’t imagine the person who would have to do my shopping. They would spend 1/2 their day on my list alone!

Love that recipe. I will have to flip through my old Fitness mags for some new inspirations.

Have a great day sunshine! ;)

Never tried an online grocer! I love going to the store and look forward to it so I don’t think I’d be a fan.

I can understand the appeal of online grocery shopping to some people. Personally, going to the store, scanning the aisles and physically selecting the goods is one of my favorite things to do!

I have never tried an online grocer, only because (like other commenters too) I love to go to the store and pick out my own food. And I get really annoyed when someone bags my groceries for me. It is the simple things that I love!

I really don’t get many recipes out of magazines — although I have tried a few from Cooking Light and Martha Stewart :)

I tried Soap.com recently, it’s more of a online drugstore than a grocery though. When I lived in NYC we used to use FreshDirect all the time and looooved it. The prices were good, the selection was huge, and they would always throw extras into your box at no charge.

This might be a cop-out answer, but I always tear a bazillion pages out of “Cooking Light.”

That meal looks awesome! I recently made a great dish out of Shape magazine…but I also love the recipes in Real Simple and Cooking Light (no-brainer there ha). Women’s Health has some good recipes also!

I love Clean Eating, Real Simple and Bon Appetit…and I loved seeing all of those fresh veggies in your meal…can you ever go wrong with vegetables?

Relay Foods sounds like a great concept! However, I must admit that I actually enjoy the process of grocery shopping:)
Number one mag for recipes is Clean Eating–I have EVERY issue and have made recipes from all of them. I also like Self’s diet plan recipes and Vegetarian Times.

That’s so awesome! Congrats! My friend actually works for them and we were talking about it yesterday. It was my first time hearing about the company and it’s such a great idea. I wish them the best of luck in expanding :D I’m actually going to check out what they have because I want to try it out.

You had me at coconut rice! Anything coconut ;) You know I’m on it. But it really does sound delicious. For recipes I love going to Vegetarian Times (British one), Real Simple, and VegNews.

XOXO hope you started your week out on a great note!

Im not usually one for online grocery shopping (like the previous commenter I actually really like grocery shopping) but it sounds like the product selection is unique. How cool. It definitely probably helps local producers boost their sales and presence.

Also, I’m in the running for a recipe contest and would love, love, love your support if you have a minute. All you have to do is visit the following link and click that you like my video. I would much appreciate it. :0) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCkllXlndi4

I belong to an online co-op, same premise–and I had been waiting for someone to check out Relay Foods! Awesome! Congrats on winning at the Watermelon Festival! I’m getting ready to try out the workouts you posted the other day (by body type!)

I just subscribed to an online grocer in NYC:

https://goodfood.basisfoods.com/register.asp

My first package is sent to be delivered to work tomorrow and I can’t wait! I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. Grocery shopping is fun but getting a package full of yummy food delivered right to you is AMAZING : )

I agree, I hope you enjoy your package!

That meal looks incredible! Anytime coconut rice is involved I have to make it. I don’t read Fitness too often, but I’ll have to check out the recipes!

I love Bon Appetit magazine, and searching for healthy recipes on Epicurious.com (it has all of the Conde Nast food magazines like Gourmet, SELF, and BA). You can always find something delicious!

I love going through Bon Appetit and all the fancy recipe magazines, though I find that I almost immediately start making substitutions and customizing the recipes to fit my budget!
I used a grocery delivery service once or twice when I lived in NYC; I think it’s a smart idea when one’s schedule is extremely full.
