Getting Through Monday

by Eating Bird Food on July 19, 2010

I’ve noticed that Mondays are always better when I have something fun to look forward to. Today’s fun-filled event was the monthly Whole Food’s Cooking Demo. The best part is that I had completely forgotten about it until around lunch time when I looked at my email calender. Surprise!!

More on that in a minute, here’s what I ended up noshing on before indulging in tapas and wine at the demo.

A delicious peach smoothie

  • 3 small white peaches (which are delicious, btw)
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup, frozen cherries
  • 1 scoop brown rice protein powder, sunwarrior vanilla
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk

And, a non-liquid component to munch on- a brown rice cake with almond butter.

Lunch was a hodge-podge salad of leftovers

Spring mixed topped with local fu’, Corny Tabbouleh, and leftover sauteed veggies (squash, bok choy, and beets) with a blob of garlic hummus as the “dressing”

It ended up being one the better salads I’ve made in a while. Sometimes leftovers make the best salad toppings.

Work went by rather quickly as I was busy working on a project and before I knew it, it was time to head to Whole Foods for the demo. This was Isaac’s first time attending and he choose the perfect night as the theme was tapas, the menu was more meat based than usual and a wine was paired with each dish.

Luckily, the many wines to be sampled made up for me not being able to sample some of the dishes. :)

Here are a few highlights:

Gildas (anchovy, olive, and chile lollipops)

Spiced Clams

My favorite of the evening – cherry tomatoes stuffed with olive tapenade

Jesse plated all the tapas beautifully – he’s top notch.

My favorite wine of the evening was the Kaiken Ultra Malbec, an Argentinean wine with aromas of red berries, black cherry and hints of tobaccos. It was a bit dry but still had a subtle sweet flavor as well. I loved it!

Overall, these WF cooking demos never disappoint and after seeing how much Isaac enjoyed it I think I might have a new buddy to attend with me. :) After doing a little shopping and meeting a blog reader at the check out line (Hi Amanda!!), we headed home.

I just popped a peachy delight in the fridge for a quick breakfast in the morning as I hope to make it to the gym. Although… we shall see. I’ve actually taken the last fews days off because my left thigh keeps tingling (you know, the feeling as though your leg is asleep, only it’s constant and doesn’t go away.) My sister, who is a nurse, seems to think it’s a nerve issue stemming from the low back pain I experienced after doing dead lifts a few weeks ago. So currently I’m taking lots of anti-inflammatory ibuprofen, resting my back and hip as well as taking a break from working out. It’s tough not working out when you’re used to doing it everyday so I hope to at least get in some light activity at the gym in the AM.

Good night and hope you had a lovely Monday!

-Brittany

That smoothie looks delicious, I’ve don’t think I’ve ever had white peaches… And I CANNOT wait to live near a whole foods and take advantage of the cooking classes! Have a beautiful week!

Mmm your smoothie looks yum! So is it 5 peaches down, 21 to go? hehe :)
I frequently use hummus as dressing too; I find that it can really “make” a salad.
I’ve never attended a WF demo but it sounds like a fun experience. Glad you both enjoyed it!

We’re moving to Austin in ten days where the headquarters of Whole Foods is located…I’m beyond excited! They have a huge building dedicated to cooking demos, and I can guarantee that I will be frequented the address often! It sounds like you had a good evening!

You are right, Mondays are so much more enjoyable when you have something to look forward to!
Leftover salads are the best. I truly feel that leftovers are eaten in their best form when in a salad. ;)

Hope your Tuesday is just as great!

Hi Brittany!!! It was nice to meet you last night. I’m sure I’ll see you again at another Whole Foods demo in the future.

P.S. I’m actually eating some overnight oats (a trick I learned from you) right now for breakfast :)

It was nice to meet you as well and like you said, I’m sure we’ll
cross paths again soon.

I had overnight oats for breakfast this morning as well. They never get old.

hey Allison,

YES!! My local Whole Foods puts on cooking demos once a month. You should check the calender at the location nearest you (it’s usually posted on their website and in the store) to see if they offer them. I’ve been to several and always have a great time. Here are some of the others I’ve attended:

I need to check if my Whole Foods do those demonstrations. I would love to go!

I love Leftover Salads — no matter what it is, it tastes so good the next day!

You’re so right, weeks are much more fun when they start with something great to look forward to. I also agree with you about leftovers on salads. It’s nice to build flavor ahead of time so you have something easy to throw on a salad later that feels substantial and delicious.

Aw, I miss Whole Foods! Although I do love Charlotte’s Earth Fare.

About your hemp protein…I tried TJ’s version and it was really grainy. It never would get completely smooth in my smoothie. Do you have a problem with that as well or do you think the brand I used was just not very good?

Reply

Eating Bird Food July 20, 2010 at 7:46 pm

I’ve definitely had hemp protein that was grainy and tasted like dirt but the Nutiva brand isn’t! It’s definitely my favorite hemp protein powder.

If you still have the TJ’s version you could use half a scoop rather than a full scoop to cut down on the graininess.

Oh yum-mo! I wish Whole Foods would come to Buffalo. Hey Britt, have you done any tapas features? I LOVE TAPAS!

Hi Leah,

Thanks for visiting my blog! I actually haven’t done any posts on tapas before, but that’s a great idea. I’d definitely like to!

Hey – you may want to research some yoga moves for the low back/tingling leg issue. Also, Inflatrol is a supplement you can pick up at South River Compounding Pharmacy that may also help. Hope you get back to working out soon!

Thanks for the tips Bethany. I’m going to look for that supplement.

Sounds like such a fun evening – Whole Foods, hurry up and open up closer to me! Is it sad that I’d actually consider the hour drive to a WF for a class though?

For as many smoothies as I’ve had in my life, I don’t think I’ve ever put those fruits together–sounds delicious!
