Decorating and Sea Veggies

by Eating Bird Food on July 11, 2010

Hi friends. How’s your weekend going?

Mine has been relaxing, yet semi-busy. We got a bunch of things done around the house – although we’re still in need of some furniture and decorating advice. If I had an unlimited amount of money I think I would be a great interior designer, but with limited cash flow it’s hard to get rooms looking “just-so” without having to piece it together over time. I think we just need Sherry and John from Young House Love to come over for dinner – that would solve all our problems. :)

Speaking of which, I may or may not have spent too much time looking at their blog for inspiration this weekend- it’s addicting. If you haven’t checked it out, you totally should – they’re a local couple (here in Richmond) that re-did their own home, blogged about it, and now help others with DIY design/home projects. They also got married on the cheap and offer all the details, plus they just had a beautiful baby girl. I’ve been reading their blog since I first learned about it at a Social Media Club meetup over a year ago and as you can probably tell, I simply love them!

In other news, the ingredients for the Asian Tacos seen in my last post can easily be transformed into an Asian salad…

Just put the tofu & slaw on top a bed of greens and sprinkle with Seaweed Gomasio (a sesame seed, sea salt, sea vegetable condiment that can be used in place of sesame seeds or salt) and hoisin sauce. Voila!

I’d say this salad is nicely decorated, no?

Most of my other eats included repeats so hopefully I don’t bore you to death…

Another zucchini rice bowl. This meal is so easy and delicious, it’s hard NOT to make it for dinner every night.

More mock-tuna salad! I’ve been making a variation of Dreena’s Goddess Garbanzos from ED&BV (with dulse instead of kelp) and it’s delish – served up in a ww wrap with a side of SeaSnax.

SeaSnax are like seaweed chips! I love that they satisfy a salty craving, but are low cal and full of nutrients! If you’re interested in SeaSnax check out their website to find a retail location near you. For all you local folks, I recently received word that SeaSnax are now being sold at Good Foods Grocery! Hooray.

And there’s also been some snacking going on….

You know those nutty little cubes found in most bulk bin sections? Well turns out they are produced by a company named Dancing Star and the cubes themselves are called Chunks of Energy. These chunks are Organic and Vegan Energy bars that have been hand cut into bit sized cubes. They come in a variety of flavors from the decadent Carob Spirulina and Chocolate Almond to the fruity Lemon Pop and Mixed Berry Blast. The folks at Dancing Star were kind enough to send me a few to sample and I’ve found that they are quite delicious.

This chocolate paradise flavor is definitely one of my favorite flavors – lots of chocolate, a few nuts and seeds and a hint of coconut aka heaven. I like the small size of the chunks because often times a full protein/energy bar is too large for a mid-day snack. I’m also excited to try the Carob Spirulina chunk as spirulina, a type of blue-green algae (seaweed), is a great source of protein, vitamins, minerals, including B-12.

As you can tell, I’ve been loving my sea veggies lately. :) I know eating seaweed may seem a bit out there to some, but as I mentioned sea vegetables are a great source of many vitamins and minerals. And, you don’t have to eat a whole bowl of seaweed salad to get the benefits, a sprinkle here and there can easily get you started. Love the chunks ‘o energy. They are so nutrient dense. I think I need to stock up before our Disney trip at the end of summer.

I want to like sea vegetables so much, really I do, but I just can’t bring myself to like them. Maybe I should start out with a very minor dusting of dulse?

Hope your week starts out right, Brit!

I love Nori seaweed. I eat them in place of bread in wraps. Dinner lately has been a nori wrap loaded with hummus, cabbage, broccoli slaw, sprouts, and black beans. It’s my go-to meal when I am in no mood to cook.

I love Chunks of Energy! My co-op has been carrying them forever. Just to clarify, they have several vegan flavors but not all are vegan.

I’m in RVA, too, and also have been reading John and Sherry’s blog for almost two years now. And I’m also a CSA shareholder at Victory Farms! And I buy Chunks of Energy at Good Foods! I’m just wondering when our paths will cross and we run into each other…

I have never tried sea vegetables. Are they expensive?! I’ve heard they’re very nutritious so I’ve been meaning to look into them more.

Also, as far as decorating goes, I dont know if you have an IKEA near you but they have a lot of decent and basic items that aren’t too expensive. Depending on what you’re looking for you might be able to find some staple items!

Thanks for the tips Kelsey. I’ve been checking out the ikea website and found the perfect dresser that I want to order!

Sea veggies aren’t too expensive- especially if you buy them at an Asian market.

Those SeaSnax sound delicious! I guess the only sea vegetable I use is nori for homemade sushi.

I’ve always gotten a kick out of the “chunks of energy” when passing the bulk bins – a literal name, indeed!
I was somewhat phobic of sea vegetables for years – I actively boycotted sushi and anything that said “weeds” might have touched. When I was in Africa, though, I did a stint training teachers on the coast of Mozambique. Food choices included nsima (cassava porridge) and sea veggies. I learned to love them fast, and now use ‘em all the time – happy ending :)

Love our sea vegetables. Love all kinds of them though top favorites are dulse, kelp and irish moss. Sometimes the other sea vegetables can get to me with that ‘seaweed’ taste, I like making sauces/spreads with them!
