Britt Goes Brown

by Eating Bird Food on February 9, 2010

For some odd reason I wasn’t craving oatmeal this morning. Since this was such a rare occurrence I decided to take advantage of it and make a tropical smoothie.

IMG_3386.JPG

It actually turned out looking more like a Brownie Frappuccino. (Do you remember those? They were sooo good right?)

In the mix – fresh mango, pineapple, frozen banana, kale, almond milk, and a packet of Sun Warrior vanilla brown rice protein powder I was sent to try out.

Brown Rice Protein Powder

This wasn’t my first time trying Sun Warrior as Isaac’s mom had given me a small sample from her tub of the vanilla to taste a while back. I’d used it in smoothies, oatmeal, and chia pudding and enjoyed it immensely. I really like the vanilla flavor and I never experienced a chalky protein powder flavor when using it. That is, until today. Before I had been measuring with my Designer Whey protein powder scoop so I never really knew what serving size I was using, plus I was typically only using 1/2 scoops in order to save the limited amount I had.

This morning I used an entire packet of the vanilla in my smoothie and despite all the fruit I included the protein powder taste was a bit intense. I added some blueberries, which is what turned my green tropical smoothie brown. They helped a little but the chalkiness was still there. I looked up product information on the Sun Warrior website and found out that there’s actually more in the sample packets than what would be in one scoop of the powder so next time I’ll know not to use to the entire packet for my smoothies… which is actually good news because now I’ll get more mileage out of my packets. :)

Sun Warrior brown rice protein powder is particularly awesome because it’s raw, vegan, GMO Free, 85% pure protein powder, and easy to digest! Plus, it’s recommended by the raw food guru, David Wolfe.

I also want to share some overall advantages of brown rice protein powder:

• Rice protein powder is a natural protein source with natural fiber. It is derived from brown rice and carries all of the essential amino acids.

• Rice protein powder is also hypoallergenic, meaning that it causes fewer allergic reactions than other protein powders, like egg and whey. It is also free of soy, milk, yeast, wheat, and other allergens that often cause allergic reactions.

• The body utilizes rice protein powder more efficiently than soy.

• Both rice protein and soy protein are priced similarly.

• Rice protein powder is vegan friendly. No animal products or byproducts are included in rice protein powder.

• The natural flavor of rice protein powder is mild and sweet, making it good to blend with water, juice, or other mixers.

• Rice protein powder is available in all of the major protein powder flavors (i.e. vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry).

Whew, hope I didn’t lose ya on that little ramble, but here’s the rest of my breakfast.

IMG_3387.JPG

My favorite sprouted english muffin with better n pb and a delicious mug of Tea Spot Red Rocks tea. (Isaac will be super excited that his Redskins mug made the blog.)

All morning at work I couldn’t stop day dreaming about the leftover Thai Chick-Un za I had waiting at home for lunch. It’s really that good!

IMG_3388.JPG

I ate a small slice straight from the fridge while another was in the toaster oven and a small mug of leftover soup was being reheated. It was just as tasty as last night.

So much so I had it again for dinner. Although difficult, it was only fair to spilt the last large slice with Isaac, it was his b-day pizza after all. :)

Now the leftovers are gone and I already want to make more!

In between all the pizza I had some grapes, a Poppyseed Heart Thrive,

and a few sip of this.

Wow, Jess you were right – the Strawberry flavor is awesome. It seems to have more of a fruity flavor than some of the others I’ve tried. I love it! Sadly, it’s one of the harder flavors to find around here. PS – Whole Foods in Richmond has the Synergy drinks on sale 2 for $5 right now. If you’re new to kombucha here’s your chance to try one out for a little less.

It’s almost Mod Fam day – get excited, this weeks episode is going to be about my favorite holiday – Valentine’s Day!

I’ve been interested in trying that protein powder as I don’t digest whey very easily and I find hemp protein quite chalky. Thanks for the review! That pizza looks even better as leftovers!

I’m with you on the fight against chalk like protein powders- and totally on board with brown rice protein- soy is the worst for chalkiness and hemp to me tastes too much like I’m consuming sand.. brown rice protein makers somehow get it right!

That pizza looks insanely good- is that cookbook worth the buy?

Hey Adrien,

It took some convincing for me to think that ED&BV was worth the buy, but honestly it’s one of my favorite cookbooks now. All the recipes are pretty straightforward, not too labor intensive and they’ve all been so good. My boyfriend (a meat eater) and I have loved everything I’ve made from it!!

I have been wanting to try the Sun Warrior protein powder but it is so $$$! I do agree that brown rice is the least chalky of them all but still find that the protein powder shines through in most everything I make. I probably use to much :D

I’ve used protein power for about 10 years and it is so tough to find one I like. There are a few brands that have stuck with me. I recently tried Sun Warrior too, and I thought it was MAJOR chalky!! Like, one of the chalkiest proteins I have ever tried. It tastes ok, but it is think. I also don’t like that I could really mix it in my shaker because it is too grainy. It also only has 15g of protein per scoop, where as my other ones have 25.

Don;t you hate how inconsistent the smoothies can be. One day, the taste and texture are right on and the next, one little thing can throw it all off. Oh well, the Sun Warrior sounds like a great product regardless. I just discovered the Rice Protein Powder and I was a big fan. The sample pack was small and the perfect amount for a smoothie.

Hope you are having a great week Britt!

I’ve only tried soy protein powder, but I’d be willing to give brown rice protein powder a shot. Thanks for the recommendation!

Gah! Thanks for the Mod Fam reminder! Is that not the most hysterical show?

Hmm, I’d love to try Sun Warrior! It’s the cost that scares me! I’m currently working with some TJ’s chocolate whey protein powder, which I like, but since my vegan stint, I’ll always feel a tad guilty when eating something that has fab vegan alternatives. Maybe when I’m actually making money I can change this.

Have a fab Wednesday!!

Thanks for all the info on Brown Rice Protein powder. I have never tried it and I never would have guessed it was a great source of protein. I need to try your Thai Chik-un Za, looks awesome!

I definitely need to stock up on protein powder for the tonsil surgery/issues since I have a feeling I’ll be drinking most of my meals :/ I’ve seen Fitnessista use this alot but wasn’t sure if I’d like it… do they even sell it in stores around here or is it jsut online?

Umm how about the random snowstorm this morning? West End got slammed with 4 inches in like 2 hours and there were accidents everywhere!

Yayy, i’m so glad you loved it! The strawberry flavor will always be my fave!

LOVE the chick-un pizza!! I would never think that pb & ketchup would work together…but i’m willing to try it out!! haha :)

And yumm. I will also always be obsessed with english muffins & pb, and those lemon poppyseed hearthrives! I saw Katharina (over at katharina’s food adventures) crumble one of the lemon heart thrives up, throw it in soymilk, top it with nut butter and heat it in the microwave, the other day! I am SO excited to try that little dessert out!!
