My AM Routine

by Eating Bird Food on January 8, 2010

After detailing my latest obsession with morning yoga in my last post, I thought it’d be fun to let you in on my morning routine Monday- Friday.

What time do I wake up? Between 6-7AM, (depending on my motivation and whether or not I plan to go to the gym).

Gym days: If I do intend on going to the gym I like to be there at least by 6:30, however if I’m slow moving I can stand to get there at 7. I workout for about an hour (a mix of cardio and strength training) and in order to have adequate time to get ready, I leave the gym no later than 7:50 so I can be home by 8. I shower (if needed!), get dressed, and usually I’m tempted to make breakfast at home because I’m starving, but if my showering and dressing process takes too long I just pack something to eat at work. I read blogs while eating breakfast, quickly put on a little makeup and fix my hair. To be honest I’m known to skimp on doing my make-up and hair/ putting extra effort into what I’m wearing in order to make sure I have time to sit down, eat breakfast, and catch up on emails and blog reading. Working in a very casual office makes skimping on these things a bit easier. After brushing my teeth, I make sure Olive has eaten breakfast and then head out the door. Isaac takes Olive outside to potty on gym days because she’s a sleepy head and stays in bed until the last person gets up.

Non gym days: I wake up at 7, do yoga (newest addition!!) or stretch a bit, make sure Isaac gets out of bed, make the bed (I really like the bed to be made!), clean up the kitchen, get dressed (I usually shower at night or only after getting sweaty at the gym so most non-gym mornings don’t include a shower). I like to be making breakfast by 8 so that I have between 8-8:50 to eat breakfast while catching up on emails/blog world, and then do my hair and make-up. We take Olive out when we wake up, if I feel badly for not doing it in a while I do it, but Isaac is usually up for doing it, which I love because it’s so cold out in the morning.

Everyday: I walk to work. It takes about 5-7 minutes, depending on what type of shoes I’m wearing. :)

Weekends are a whole nother story. If I don’t have any big plans I usually sleep in until 8-9AM, eat breakfast, play online (reading blogs or blogging), and then hit up the gym.

So this morning was meant to be a gym morning- but I kept pushing snooze and didn’t get out of bed until 7 so it ended being a yoga at home morning. I did the free 20 minute Yoga for Weight loss video from Yogadownload. It’s a short version of the challenging practice- it starts with fast past flows and finishes with a shoulder stand, fish pose, and eventually ends with savasana. I’m thinking this particular video is worth buying the full 45 or 60 minute version. After doing yoga in the morning for quite I few days I think I’m addicted. It’s just such a nice thing to wake up to.

After yogaing and getting ready I ended up running short on time. I snacked on a sliced banana with better n pb.

And threw a packet of Kashi Truly Vanilla in my bag for breakfast at work.

As you probably have noticed, I like Kashi products. Their cereals and crackers are among some of my favorite products. As far as instant oats go, I like the heartiness of this flavor and the actual flax seeds mixed in the oats. It has 150 calories, 2g of fat, 100mg of sodium, 6g of sugar and 7g of fiber. 6g of sugar is low for a flavored instant oatmeal – Quaker’s Maple Brown Sugar has 13g of sugar and Quaker’s Cinnamon and Spice has 15g! Plus, the addition of soy and whey give the Truly Vanilla packet 9 grams of protein! I really enjoy stove top oats but when in a rush, I think Kashi instant oats are a good pick.

What’s your AM routine like? Do you eat breakfast at home, on the run, not at all, or at work?

I love reading about other’s AM routines/time management. I have been doing AM yoga as of late too and loving it!

Interesting post! I usually make breakfast the night before (a green smoothie) and I drink it on the way to the gym in the morning. I love my smoothies…but I will say that it’s freezing to be drinking something so cold in the winter!

I love that you have such a carefree attitude towards your AM routine. Sometimes, I feel like I get so stressed when I am not following my “plan” to the exact T. Like the other day, I woke up feeling pretty sore and a little sick, and it took me way to long to decide to skip the gym and do yoga instead. Yoga felt AMAZING and it was just what I needed, and I am so happy that I actually listened to my body. Too often, I don’t do this.

I need to spend more mornings with you girl!

I really like that hot oatmeal, too. It’s nice that there is a healthy one that is flavored.

I always like hearing other people’s AM routines. I’m still trying to figure one out :?
But I have found that I need breakfast before I work-out!

I don’t really eat breakfast – I might eat breakfast-y type foods, but it’s 10:30 or 11 by the time I eat. I like to be done drinking coffee before I start on breakfast, and sometimes I drink coffee until 1. :) Probably not the healthiest, but oh well.

I’m in awe that you get up early enough to give yourself an hour to eat breakfast/read blogs. I roll out of bed with just enough time to get ready before running out the door.

My morning routine is different almost everyday. I am in the office 2 or 3 days a week or working from home the other days. And of course the weekends involve sleeping in a little. When I am in the office, I usually eat my breakfast at my desk which gives me more time to get ready at home. That is great that you can walk to work!

Great yoga download! It really is a workout, unlike some other yoga videos out there. Can’t wait to read more!

Ah! I have an 8-5/5 days a week job and I have found that it is much more enjoyable to work out in the morning (that’s right, 6am wake-up call) and if I can hop in and out of the shower then I have about 20-30 minutes to have some oats or bulgur and read some blogs here and there. I don’t think I could squeeze in yoga in the mornings, but I have done it on my lunch break before and loved it!

I always eat breakfast (at least during the week), but one thing I’ve started doing recently is eating it at home. I used to be an on-the-go or eat-at-the-desk kind of person for the last several years. But now I’m trying to be more mindful of what I eat, and part of that is limiting meals to tables and not desks, couches, or vehicles. So far all I’ve been able to manage is a bowl of Kashi Go Lean and raw milk, but I like that it forces me to slow down and enjoy it.

Sounds like a great morning routine :) I love doing yoga and should include it as a workout more often! I’m usually up by 6 at least 4 days of the week for work…Shower, eat and part of my workout includes walking to work (aka trudging in the snow) ;) I also love kashi products!

Ahh I wish I could walk to work so quickly!

On weekdays: I wake up, drink water and wake-up for 30 minutes, work out, shower, breakfast, work. :-) I have been doing the same thing for over 3 years, and I can’t imagine it changing! On weekends, I chill. Breakfast, blogging, sometimes running. :-) Happy Saturday!

I loved this! It’s funny, because at school–i start most of my mornings blog reading and eating a bowl of oatmeal, too! And i think starting your day with some yoga on non-workout days sounds fabulous. I really should stretch/practice some yog-y moves more often!!

That banana/pb combo looks amazing. Now i’m really craving something like that!!

Hi! I just found your blog, and I’m excited to keep reading– it looks like you have some GREAT eats on here!

I don’t teach until afternoons, so I usually start my morning very leisurely with blog reading and cereal or oatmeal…not a bad way to start the day!

I’m still working on getting my morning routines together. I try to prep breakfast the night before. I like the snooze button too much. I need to work on this.

Thanks for posting this Brittany. You know how curious I am. I wake up at 7:30, shower, put on makeup, do something with my incorrigable hair, dress, feed the kittys and head out the door for the 15/20 min. drive to work, hoping to arrive around 9am. Oh, and I always stop by McDonalds for my sugar free tea with lemon. I haven’t figured out where I’d stick in the exercise, although you know that’s the last thing I want to do. Maybe someday I’ll get with it. YOU are a fantastic role model.

I wish I had that much time in the morning to get everything done. I’m up at 5:30 or 6:30 depending on the day, and I have to be out of the house an hour later. So in that time, I make breakfast, make lunch, eat breakfast, get dressed, pack my bag. It definitely takes me the whole hour too – not because I’m high maintenance, but because I’m not a morning person, so I’m slow. I shower in the evening to avoid getting up even earlier.
