Have you seen this bar?

by Eating Bird Food on January 20, 2010

I don’t eat bars everyday, but I think they are a great on the go snack. You can easily stash one in your purse, car, or desk drawer that way you have something healthy to munch on whenever the hunger might strike.

I was recently sent some PROBAR Fruition Bars to review. These fruit-based bars are the newest addition to the PROBAR product line up. Made with a base of chia seeds, oats, and cashews, the Fruition bar comes in 4 real fruit flavors: Peach, Blueberry, Strawberry, and Cran-Raspberry.

As I mentioned above, I don’t eat bars on the regular because I would much rather consume real whole foods if they are readily available to me. However, sometimes that’s not that case and what I love about these bars is that they are snack size with only 160 calories. Sometimes it’s hard to find a healthy bar that is made for snacking (with less calories) as many are made for meal-replacement and have 250 plus calories per serving. Yeah I know, I could always cut the bar in half and save the other half for later – and there have been times where I’ve done this, however usually when I open a bar I’m pretty much destined to eat the whole thing. :)

So far I’ve tried 2 fruition flavors the peach and strawberry. The strawberry didn’t wow me so my review today will be of the peach.

The peach flavor is very pronounced and I like the soft and chewy texture. However, the chia seeds are my favorite part! We all I know I love my chia seeds, but I’ve actually never seen them in a bar so the Fruition had me jumping for joy. Not only are they rich in omega-3 fatty acids but whole chia seeds add a unique seedy crunchiness to almost anything they are in and this bar is no exception. Love it! The look of the bar is similar to a Larabar only the Fruition seems to have a bit more moisture and the fruits and nuts are ground into smaller pieces – similar to the filling of a Newman’s Own Fig Newman. :)

It’s definitely not what I consider a protein bar, but it does have 3g of protein, 4g of fiber, and only 2g of fat. Plus the bar is organic, vegan, and doesn’t have a scary ingredient list.

Where to spot these bars: I’ve seen them at REI, my local organic market and at Whole Food’s. If you can’t find them at a location nearby, you can always order them online from the website or amazon.

Also, have you seen this new Clif bar? I spotted it at Whole Food’s the other night and realized I hadn’t heard anything about this new line- CLIF C: a double layer fruit and nut bar made with only a handful of ingredients.

The new flavors include raspberry, cherry pomegrante, apple, and blueberry.

I’ve only tried the blueberry and honestly, I thought the bar was so-so. I like that it’s small and less calories than the normal Clif bars but it’s got nothing on the White Chocolate Macadamia bar!

Just thought I would throw that out there incase you’re looking for some new bars to try!! I’ll be back soon with a more “regular” post, although I’m not really sure what I would deem regular EBF? More food photos I guess. :)

I feel the exact same way about bars – I would never eat just half of one!

I usually don’t eat bars, but Clif’s are the ones I made exceptions for! They are so tasty!

Have not seen either one of those bars, but those fruition ones look fantastic! What’s a good online store to buy whole foods from? I’m in Canada, you see, we don’t get all the wonderful products you guys do (tres jealous!)

Amazon would be a good place to start as they carry a lot of organic food products. I also recently found out about iherb.com and I’ve found that they have great prices on some organic food products.

I’ve tried the Fruition bars before & they were good! Except I can’t find them at any stores around here…
And I’m waiting for those Cliff bars to appear in our grocery store!

I’m excited to give the fruition bar a try. I’ve never tried chia seeds (although I’m intrigued since you keep blogging about them), but I’m a huge fan of Larabars because of the tiny amount of ingredients.

I have one of each of these bars lurking in my stash right now–glad to hear your reviews!

Thanks for the reviews! I like hearing it from a food blogger/foodie rather than some fitness/review website. I really want to try both – as a student, bars are a convient healthy snack for moi (though I do prefer my whole foods as well!)
