Fig Me

by eatingbirdfood on August 15, 2009

I’m convinced that I need a fig tree. In my life before blogging (LBB) I hadn’t ever eaten a fig. Well besides the sticky, seedy figginess in Fig Newtons of course. However, since blogging I’ve tried many new foods including several types of fig products:

I had come to truly love the sweetness and seedy texture that dried figs have to offer, yet I still had never sank my teeth through a fresh fig. Imagine my excitement I found out that Isaac’s parents have a FIG TREE!

I picked up some, ate them all in a day and had Isaac pick up more a day later.

Quite a cute little fruit.

After tasting the deliciousness of a fresh fig I’m sad I hadn’t tried them much sooner. They’re the perfect snacking fruit.

I was expecting a seedy texture, similar to that of dried figs, however interestingly enough these fresh figs have seeds but they aren’t textured at all. You don’t even feel em. I highly recommend trying figs (both fresh and dried) if you haven’t before. You won’t be disappointed.

That morning I made a yummy bowl of figgy chia seed oats. Each bite was better than the next. Twas the perfect breakfast for my first morning home, as I think I might have been doing through oat withdrawl while on vacay.

Another breakfast item I had been missing immensely- purple smoothies. I’d gone for way too many days without my breakfast smoothie so I was excited to whip out the vita-mix this morning.

I had a banana, blueberry, and chia smoothie with a slice of cinnamon raisin walnut bread smothered with PB & Co cinnamon raisin swirl pb – a little gift I’ve been treasuring, from none other than Hangry Pants. Thanks again Heather, I’ve been really been enjoying the PB.

Today’s been a lazy Saturday. I’m attempting to dry a few of the figs in my dehydrator and cleaning the house while listening to the live sessions of the Healthy Living Summit. I’ve picked up some great tips and information. I would have loved to attend the summit, but it just wasn’t feasible since I had just taken off work and paid for my vacation to Cayman. I sincerely hope I can attend next year!!

You and I are so in sync! I tried fresh figs for the first time today (check out my blog from today) and I absolutely loved them! Almost as much as my dry figs! I actually got the idea from you so thanks!

Figs are incredible. They’re on sale here for 2 dollars a pint this week at Whole Foods and I’m on my 2nd pint. I’ll definitely get some more before the sale ends

My Grandpa had a Turkish fig tree, and the figs were so good right off the tree! Your chia seed oats look lovely!

That chia seed oats/figs combo looks fantastic! I have never tried either…but I am putting both on my “to try” list.

Hi Brittany….I’d love to try a fig when I get back from vacation. Can you add that to our fruit for the office list?
See ya soon.

The father of a friend of mine has fig trees, but we live in Chicago, so he has to bury the trees in the winter. We help him push the tree over, cover it with tarps, tie it down, put dirt over it! Then in the spring we uncover it and it always springs back up and gives us delicious figs! It is well worth the trouble for all those fresh figs he gives away as payment for helping!

Yummmoo that bowl of oats looks amazing. I just got into figs recently and that is a great idea! I usually like dried figs, I used to be intimidated by fresh ones haha. I’ll have to try them on my oats sometime!!! I need to hop on the smoothie train again too! I miss them! Have a great Sunday my dear!

Those figs looks delish and make me want to plant my own little tree family immediately. Do you know what variety of tree those figs came from?

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever tried a fresh fig. I’ve had them in the newtons, and made my own dried fig bars, but never fresh. They look a bit…odd to me.

Also, I haven’t been able to find figamajigs in forever at target. have you?

Suz – I don’t know the type of tree off hand because it’s not my tree, but my educated guess would be either celeste or brown turkey.
