Cinnamon Girl

by eatingbirdfood on August 19, 2009

Like the Neil Young song.

The bad news is that I didn’t end up making the new recipe last night for dinner because I realized I was missing a key ingredient. It was getting late, I’d had a long day at work and I didn’t feel up to making a trip to the store before eating dinner. The good news is that I will be making it sometime this week and I wound up having a delicious veggie filled dinner.

Spaghetti squash I baked on Monday night for the week with some jarred tomato basil sauce (don’t judge- I was hungry) and left over grilled veggies, corn and asparagus.

After dinner I had a bit of a sweet tooth and this locally baked bread starting calling my name.

I don’t know what it is about cinnamon, but I love it. I can’t get enough of cinnamon breads, cinnamon in my oats, cinnamon swirl peanut butter, the list goes on. Things really haven’t changed much because growing up Ccinnamon Toast Crunch and Cinnamon Life were my favorite cereals.

I had half a slice of this heavenly bread (notice the intricate cutting job) with some PB&CO cinnamon swirl peanut butter.

After sitting around the house for a good while reading blogs and debating on whether or not I should go work out, I finally mustered up the energy to grab a book I started on vacay, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and hit up the gym.I was happy that I went because I ended up walking an hour on the mill while immersed in the book. I was nearing the end (about 40 pages left) when I pried myself off the treadmill and headed home. I spent a tiny bit of time scooping a bowl of Julie’s Organic Cinnamon Apple Frozen Yogurt and then settled back into reading. (I just can’t get away from the cinnamon.)

This was a new to me yogurt and I was pleased, as it was smooth and decadent and felt as though I was eating Apple Pie a la mode. I ended finishing both the yogurt and the book. I’ll let you guess which was finished first?

So, the yogurt was good, as for the book- it was heart wrenching, but overall phenomenal. It’s a fictional novel, but I enjoyed the political and historical undertones that were dispersed throughout. It never seemed like a history lesson, but I feel that I learned quite a bit about Afghan culture, their view of women, and what the people who lived there during war endured. It definitely made me appreciate the many things I take for granted in life!

I highly recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini.

Have you read this one or Hossenini’s other book, The Kite Runner? What did you think?

Happy Humpday!

Montana Gold is awesome!!! I love cinnamon bread as well. I totally forgot I had some (since I keep mine in the freezer). Oops! And that ice cream sounds absolutely delicious. And to answer your question, I have read neither of those books. A Thousand Splended Suns sounds like a good read though :)

p.s. Your vacation recap is incredible!!

mmm all of that cinnamon looks delious! Especially that frozen yogurt yum. Never read that book but I did just finish A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. It’s about a man and his funny friend who decide to hike the AT even though they haven’t trained for it at all. Highly recommend it! Never laughed so hard in my life reading this book :) The author has an amazing sense of humor.

LOVE cinnamon! It’s fantastic in milk with cereal or CINNAMON almond milk (you can use almond milk, milk, rice milk, or soy). Just add some sweetener (honey, splenda, stevia etc) some almond extract, cinnamon and microwave it with the milk. It’s better when the milk is steamed or boiled on stove top, but microwaving is far easier. Stir and sprinkle more cinnamon on top. It is soooo good. It’s even better poured on cereal when it’s warm (like shredded wheat, mini wheats, wheetabix etc). I am getting hungry just thinking about it! The book was really good. I read it the day it came out. Have a great day at work!

Yum, that yogurt and bread look delicious! I’m so jealous that you’re in Montana, that’s my all time favorite state:) I’ve heard really great things about that book but have not personally read it yet. I definitely look forward to soon though!

Cinnamon is AWESOME!!!!!!! I don’t think there’s one dessert recipe that I DON’T include cinnamon in!
Part of me believes that it’s addictive. ;)
It even tastes good with chicken!!!!!!!

I loved The Kite Runner and actually just watched the movie version! It was amazingly close to the book, just omitting a bit at the end. My mom saved her copy of A Thousand Splendid Suns for me so after your glowing review I will definitely make a point of reading it!

I firmly believe there is no such thing as too much cinnamon – I put it liberally in just about anything, including right into my coffee grounds before brewing! That bread must have been amazing!

Yum yum! I also passionately love all things cinnamon. I will have to try that yogurt.

I so agree, cinnamon bread is soooo delicious, especially if you warm it up a bit and melt all the cinnamon “goo” swirled throughout! Have you ever tried making french toast out of it? Mmmmm mmmm. Montana Bread Co. is also out at the West End Farmers market on saturdays and always looks so yummy! :)

I’ve read both books. They were both good, but it’s Thousand Splendid Suns that sticks with me. It was really wonderful.

That bread looks great!

Cinnamon’s incredible. it can be sweet or spicy. Have you seen the new Purely Decadent ice cream, Snickerdoodle? It has a cinnamon ice cream with snickerdoodle cookie bites in it–yum

Yum! I love all veggie dinners!
I read The Kite Runner and recall liking it, but it was while I was in high school, so I should re-read it.

Oh honey baby!
I read both his books and wow, are they ever life changing…another good one for Middle Eastern education is Three Cups of Tea. I liked Kite Runner best but they both had me sobbing and have changed my heart. Amazing. Amazing!

I’m a cinnamon freak too! It’s really the best flavor-enhancer. I think we go through a jar every 3 weeks! It’s just soooo good! I like to put it on everything and even savory dishes. We made a pumpkin pie spice crusted pot roast one time and it was amazing! That yogurt looks heavenly. I’ve never read that book before, but I’m intrigued :)

I read the Kite Runner first, then I read A Thousand Splendid Suns. Kite Runner is directed more into the children aspect of Afghanistan and Splendid Suns featured a lot of the female life over in the Middle East of course. I thoroughly enjoyed them both both definitely emotionally driven.

Hey Ada. I actually don’t live in Montana! It’s a bit confusing – the name of the bread company is Montana Gold- but it’s located in Richmond, VA. Although, I have a friend who lived in Montana for the summer and loved it!!
