Large and in Charge

2009 May 8
tags: carob chips, dried cranberries, egg whites, Ezekiel English Muffins, pb puffins, reduced sugar blackberry jam, roasted almonds, swollen knee, trail mix

I’ll explain the title a bit later. Starting in chronological order with today’s eats, here is my delicious breakfast.

Ezekiel knows best when it comes to english muffins – I toasted it, put TJ’s reduced sugar blackberry jam on one side, and 2 micro egg whites on the other. I sprinkled some hot sauce on the eggys after taking the photo. Perfect savory sweet breakfast. There was also some unpictured cantaloupe involved and this little guy.

The morning at work went by quickly and I came home around 1 for lunch. Breakfast held me over rather well, although I did have a banana around 11. I ate lunch outside while Olive tinkled/barked at the neighbors.

Fresh and yummy salad. I also had a whole wheat tortilla filled with edamame hummus (no pict). That’s The Fitnessista’s Summer Shape Up workout plan peaking out from under my plate. After eating in the sunshine, I packed a little snack bag and headed back to the office.

A few dried cranberries, 10 roasted almonds, and 1/2 a serving of PB puffins. I ate this mix as a snack once I was back at the office. YUM!

Okay so here comes the (pretty lengthy) explanation for my title. Check out my left knee (it’s actually on the right when looking at this photo).

It’s swollen AKA quite large and very much in charge. And what I mean by in charge is that I’m really trying to listen to my body and realize that my knee isn’t feeling so hot and I shouldn’t be doing any workouts that will make it worse. Tonight at the gym I tried doing the bike, but 1 minute in my knee was feeling really tight so I decided to fore-go cardio and just did an arm workout.

What’s strange is the story leading up to this point. I first noticed that my knee was swollen almost 2 weeks ago when I hit the right top part of it on the bathtub. I looked down at my knees and noticed the left knee was bigger, but there was no way it could have swollen up that fast and in the opposite corner? But also odd, I hadn’t felt any discomfort or pain before hitting my knee so who knows how long it was swollen before I noticed it? I didn’t think much of it and continued working out as normal because it never hurt. Well, Wednesday evening at the gym I did a hardcore leg workout including lunges and jump squats and that night my knee was really tight and extra swollen. It’s been tight since then and now it’s starting to worry me. I scheduled a doctors appointment for next week (the soonest they could get me in), but I’m thinking that I probably just over did it with the the leg workout and I should take a few rest days. It stinks because I was really getting into strength training and was trying to amp up my workouts and now I will have to discontinue a lot of what I would like to be doing because of this. But I know that if I keep pushing it, it will only get worse so I’m going to listen to my body and take the rest days. Which means no Run to the Alter 5K tomorrow boo hiss :( – there will be more 5ks so I’m not fretting. I’ve been icing it tonight as I posted and I took some advil as well. Any advice out there for a swollen knee? Has this happened to anyone else before? I’ll keep you all posted (hehe)!

Anyhow, after the gym I ran by Whole Foods. I just got a couple things, but the best part was from the bulk bins. I mixed the cranberry jubilee, deluxe trail mix, and some carob chips to make my own mix (shhh… don’t tell WF’s) In actuality I was just being green by using less plastic bags, plus I unintentionally intentionally tagged the bag with the code for the most expensive item so I wasn’t stealing.

I munched on some in the car and then some more when I got home. It was delish!

We’re heading the beach earlyish tomorrow for the wedding with our fingers crossed that the weather forecast is incorrect and that it won’t rain (the wedding is outside on the beach!!) I hope everyone has a great weekend and if you need something to do, check out these cool things happening in blog land.

EEK! That knee is quite swollen! Ice it lots; I hope it gets better soon.

I also feel quite bad using so many plastic bags at the bulk bins and I totally want to mix stuff like you did, but I’m totally wussy because I don’t want to get caught by a cashier who might know I mixed products! :(

You are smart to give it a rest, and I love the “they’ll be other 5K” attitude. I have no idea what it could be, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it is something minor!

i love pairing half an english muffin with savory and the other half with sweet. best of both worlds. do you eat the savory first and then the sweet, or vice versa, or alternate back and forth?

go easy on the knee, hope it gets better soon. yeowch.

It’s all about the ice. I took a bad fall at skating years ago, and severely pulled my MCL in my knee. It was a swollen ugly mess (although, fortunately I didn’t tear it, so I could still walk on it, but no skating for 6 – 8 weeks). I would ice it at work, at home. Max 20 min on. Just remember the time you take off now will be much less than time you would have to take off from working out later on if you do more damage. Hopefully it gets better soon :)
