Ch-Chi-Chia

I think I’m a little late on this, but after reading about lots of bloggers showing love to the chia seed, touting the great benefits, and the fact that Heather’s oatmeal with chia seeds always looked like cookies and cream to me, I thought needed to try them. Then I saw the price for a bag of them at Whole Food’s and decided they simply weren’t for me, how great could this seed be anyway?

Well, the stars aligned and it just so happens that I ran across them again at my local health food store (Ellwood Thompson’s) And, they carry them in bulk. This was particularly awesome because I could easily buy $2 worth, test em out, and decide for myself if they were everything they are said to be.

I made the standard Eating Bird Food morning bowl of oats:

  • 1 cup water, 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/4 cup oat bran
  • 1/4 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 banana (cooked in)
  • dash of cinnamon

After the cooking process I stirred in 1 tablespoon of the chia seeds and topped it all off with a 1/2 tbsp. of  BN’PB.

I loved that I didn’t have to grind the seeds (using the coffee grinder to grind flax is a pain) and I have to admit, I really enjoyed them in my oats. I loved the texture they gave the oats and the fact that they, like flax seed, have the same gelatin factor and really pump up a bowl. That one tbsp. added 2 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber!! I was left feeling completely satisfied all morning and didn’t break for lunch until 12:30. And, if you want more proof that the chia seed is awesome, Heather has fully explained the Wonders of the Chia Seed here.

By the way, Twitter has a 5K going on, I’m not actually participating but I thought it was kind of cool http://www.tweet5k.org/ and I’m on twitter too.

I’m so jealous you can get your chia seeds in bulk. My Whole Foods only sells them by the pound, and they are so expensive. However, I found that ordering them online is much much cheaper. If you love them and want more, check out ChiaSeedsDirect. I just received my order from them. I’m in chia heaven. :)

Hope you have a good weekend!

I just came across your blog and really like it! I am from Richmond too so it is neat to see someone using local resources (love Ellwoods) to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Have you checked out any of the great new stores in the West End – both TJ’s and WF’s? I am in Cfield and am praying for somehting good to open up over here soon!!!! I do love the Farmers Market on Forest Hill though, you should check that out if you have not yet. I think it is just a Saturday thing.

I look forward to giving some of your meal ideas a try!

I’m so glad you found them for cheap. I found some but they were a freakin’ rip! It does look like they make everything super creamy though!
I’m glad you don’t have to get surgery. Oh joyous day!

    Hey darlin,

I just found your blog off of someone’s blogroll and I’m having a lot of fun flipping through! You make some yummy looking eats!

I just tried Chia seeds this morning for the first time. I totally agree that the gelatinous flair is pretty darn interesting. I’m hoping to make some raw pudding soon here as well.

    Hope your weekend is wonderful!

    With Love,

    Emily

    Jessica-

Thanks for commenting. It’s always cool to meet other Richmonders through blogging! Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are my favorite stores. I was totally pumped when they went up last year. I will have to check out the Forest Hill Farmers Market, I haven’t been there yet. I also want to check out Byrd House Market. Have you been there?
