The New Nutty Bar

2009 March 5

by eatingbirdfood

I had the best snack I’ve had in LONG time. And, it reminded me of one of my favs back in elementary school:

nutty1

Any Nutty Bar fans in the house?? Little Debbie’s treats used to be my snack of choice when packing my lunch and Nutty Bars were on the top of the list with Oatmeal Cream Pies coming in at a close second. I loved that you could pull the wafers apart and eat each slice separately. Only it kind of stunk when there was a middle wafer that ended up having no chocolate or peanut butter. :(

This snack didn’t come from the yellow box above but instead started with this purple box of Wasa Crackers.

Now, I’ve had other varieties of Wasa Crackers and liked them just fine (the Light Rye) but never the Crisp’n Light. I loved these bad boys. They taste sweeter than the Light Rye and seriously remind me of a wafer. Put a little bit of PB on top and you’ve got yourself  A NUTTY BAR! I’m not kidding… you must try this. I promise- it’s good! Well, anything with PB is good, but I still can’t believe how good this is. Maybe it’s the nostalgic factor…

I used Peanut Butter Co- Cinnamon Raisin Peanut Butter but I can’t wait to try it with other nut butters!!

I did eat other things today, but I was most excited about the nutty bar creation. The following is a recap of the rest of the day. Let us start with my lovely raisin oatmeal this morning… so good! Have I mentioned that I love USAM- it makes oats perfectly sweet, not too sweet, just perfectly sweet. The overload of raisins helped with the sweetness today as well.

Blah soup for lunch…..

I really hate to say this because I have never been disappointed by Amy’s, but the Chunky Vegetable soup was way too salty. I almost stopped eating it, but decided I didn’t want to be wasteful. This is really the only Amy’s product that I have ever disliked, which is sad. But I won’t be buying this again.

With the soup I had a ww pita with laugh cow cheese spread, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, and tofukery!

I had snacks this afternoon – granny smith apple and 100 calorie snack bag of popcorn. Dinner was crazy because I was famished when I got home from the gym. I had leftover Amy’s pizza (yes- I am still eating that), some of Isaac’s Tasty Bite Sprouts Curry, some of Isaac’s baked sweet potato with cottage cheese and ketchup. Thanks to Jenn for such a great idea. Isaac hates cottage cheese so he didn’t try it, but I loved it. I’ll definitely be making my own baked SP soon.

Is there anything that you eat that you significant other despises?

I used to think a solid lunch was Cooler Ranch Doritos, Nutty Bars and Country Time pink lemonade. I LOVED nutty bars, and am right there with the oatmeal cream pies too! That’s so crazy about the Amy’s soup, because I just had a bad experience with one of her soups too! And I’d never been disappointed before!

Dare I say it…my bf hates oatmeal!! Gasp. And yet he eats it for workout fuel. Hardcore, I guess. Love your snack idea! mmm…

And I’m agreed with you on Amy’s – I gave it up because of the salty aftertaste that wouldn’t quit. Drove me nuts.

If I had a significant other, I’m sure they would hate alot of the things I eat. Actually, the last person I seriously dated thought that cucumber and green beans were repulsive. What’s up with that?!

And those wasa do look wafer-like! I don’t think I’ve seen those before up here. I like their regular crackers though alot :D

I’d like to say that Amy’s products are always no-fail, but I’ve had the same problem with some of her soups–the light in sodium varieties are much better.

Oh boy, don’t get me started on Little Debbie :) My favorites were the oatmeal creme pies and the Christmas tree-shaped cakes. OMG.

Thanks for the tip on the Wasa – I’ve tried them before, but not that kind, either. If you say it reminds you of a Nutty Bar, I believe you!

I total agree with you on that Amy’s soup, which is unfortunate because I love Amy’s. Last night I also tried the vegetable barley and found the same problem. Gotta stick with the tomato bisque!

Yay! I’m really glad to hear that you liked the sweet potato + cottage cheese combo. I was definitely leery of it at first, too, but it’s just so awesome! There are a lot of foods that I eat the Bobby doesn’t like…he is ridiculous, lol. He won’t eat stove top oatmeal because it’s not sweet enough – he only likes the instant packets. And there are plenty of other examples. He is a picky guy…but I’ll still keep him around.

That is a great substitution and looks way better than the o.g. I like Wasa crackers but I haven’t tried that kind!
I love your story about Issac. Ha! Proud moment for him! Rob has had MANY nights like that – fortunately most of them were before we met. He stopped drinking after he passed out on his front porch and vomited on himself. Sexy!

Nutty bars = LOVE! <3 Glad you found a healthier substitute :)

Oh yes, there are many things I enjoy that my man does NOT.
Cottage cheese, feta cheese, most veggies, split pea soup, acorn squash…but he’s a trooper and tries a lot of the “weirder” things I prepare :)

    Happy Friday!

That Nutty Bar sub is genius! If only you could pull the wafer layers apart and eat the “peanut butter” off like a real Nutty Bar. I like to play with my food.

I find those amy’s soup really good, but to cut the saltiness, you can add a bit more liquid and pasta…

Oh my gosh, Nutty Bars and Oatmeal Cream Pies – 2 of my favorite growing up, and I loved eating the nutty bars in layers! So, I MUST find those crackers ASAP.

My husband always tells me everything I make stinks…especially broccoli. But, then he sits down to eat it with me every night.:)

We’re the same way with cottage cheese. I adore it, but even looking at it make Chris (husband) sick. Unfortunately, I like it on everything! Sorry honey.
