Lunch Workout?

by eatingbirdfood on March 19, 2009

Is it possible to get in a workout during your lunch break? I go back and forth on this and I kind of think it depends on the working situation, how long you have for lunch, and also how intense the workout is. I’ve read in magazines that it is possible and I was actually very successful at walking for 30 minutes during lunch at my old job.

Since changing jobs and getting a puppy I haven’t been doing much of anything on my lunch break besides walking home, taking Olive out, and eating.

After purchasing The Shred I kept trying to convince myself that I had plenty of time to do a 20 minute workout during my 1 hour lunch break. Finally this morning I decided I was going to try a little lunch experiment to see if the aforementioned question is in fact obtainable.

I set out my workout clothes and put Jill in the DVD player before I left for work. After a morning of sitting at the computer, I headed out for lunch around 12:30. I wasn’t starving (this was a miracle) so I took Olive outside, changed, and started The Shred. As usual, the workout was good and I was feeling it by the end (still using my cans!)

I was keeping an eye on the clock and when the cool down was starting it was already 1:06. I started freaking out a little so I decided to ditch the cool down. I ran into the kitchen and started frantically searching for something easy and quick for lunch. I took some Friendship cottage cheese out and slapped a better n PB & J toasted sandwich together.

I scrambled around the house to get changed back into my work clothes, freshened up, put the CC in my purse, wrapped my sandwich in a paper towel and rushed back to work. By this time I was ravenous so I ate my sandwich while walking. I made it back to my desk at 1:27, 3 minutes to spare!

Needless to say this was v. rushed, but I felt awesome sitting at my desk for the rest of the afternoon knowing I had worked out on my lunch break. To think, I could get this feeling all day if I could just wake up earlier and workout in the morning more often. I digress….

The point is that is lunch time workouts are NOT mission impossible!! I think I could be even better at it if I planned ahead a little more and made my lunch in the morning.

Other lunch time options I like:

Walking: I like this option because you don’t have to change clothes and you can invite other in your office to come or chat on the phone. (Just bring a comfy pair of shoes.)

Stretching: Even if you don’t have much time you can still hop out of your seat for a quick stretch.

I’m positive there are a ton of other great ideas on how to get a good lunch time workout in. If you are looking for even more ideas, check out this article.

GREAT job!!! What a great feeling to know you’ve worked up a good sweat, while no one else in the office probably did! Very productive!

Yum, yum–love me some whipped cottage cheese. If only it were more widely available!

I often go for a 30 minute walk during my lunch. That’s all I have for lunch, so I just eat my lunch at my desk. It works out very nicely!

Since seeing the whole 30 day shred challenge I’ve been thinking if it would be possible to do at lunch – thanks for the recap!

Yeah I definitely make time for a walk during work every day – I love just putting the ipod on shuffle and seeing where my feet take me for a half hour.

I could see doing a lunch time workout if you have no issues eating your lunch at your desk, but I think it would be pretty hard to do both, even with an hour for lunch. I eat at my desk anyways, so if I really wanted to do a lunch work out, I could, but it would basically have to be walking, since I live too far away from work to get home to do anything.

That sounds like it was worth it, in spite of being totes rushed for time! There is no feeling like having your w/o over with early in the day.
I think Rose used to do lunch workouts! Maybe she still does!
