I switched up my oats a bit this morning and added 1/2 scoop of Designer Whey protein- so the end recipe looked like this:
- 1/2 cup oats
- almost 1 cup of water, with a smidge of hemp milk
- 1/2 banana
I cooked that for about 5 minutes on high and when it was getting thick and sticking to the bottom of the pot I turned off the heat and stirred in 1/2 scoop of the protein powder. I’m not sure but for some reason I feel that heat might be bad for protein powder… does anyone know?? Anyhow, I forgot to mix in the ground flax so I just sprinkled some on top. Chocolate for breakfast in a healthy way!
Isaac on the other hand also had chocolate for b-fast in the form of 2 chocolate pop tarts – they were organic, I’ll give him that, but not quite what I call a healthy b-fast.
Speaking of which, one day at Whole Foods I overheard a lady who was buying organic cheese puffs talking and said to her friend “I love shopping at Whole Food’s because they have the best tasting stuff and if it’s from here its gotta be healthy.” I agree they do have the best tasting stuff, but NEWS FLASH lady. Even though those cheese puffs are organic doesn’t exactly mean they are healthy. Just throwing that out there.

Delish oats!!
I’ve always wondered that about protein powder too… I try not to heat it for that reason.
AMEN to your statement about just because stuff is sold at Whole Foods, doesn’t make it healthy – people are ridiculous!! They need to realize that not everything organic or vegan or whatever is healthy.
Happy Tuesday!!
Haha! That lady’s comment cracked me up. I kind of feel bad for people who think that way.
Great bowl of oats – would you recommend that brand of protein powder? I’ve been looking into buying some but I’m not sold on any brand yet. Thanks!
Have a great Tuesday!!
This looks yum-licious… if that’s a word?
Veggie Girl – I totally agree!!
Ksgoodeats – Yes. I would definitely recommend the Designer Whey brand. I buy it in the chocolate flavor. It has 100 calories and somewhere around 18 grams of protein (don’t quote me on that). I like it.
Rose- Totally a word!
You definitely read my mind! I actually fell into the trap like the lady too, thinking that “Oh my, organic cookies – they must be healthy”. But a cookie is a cookie. Either way, they do taste darn good though! Hahah!
My mom does that- she feels if food is healthy, she can eat as much as she wants of it, and cant understand why she keeps gaining weight if she is eating healthy food….
Good question? I would think that if there are recipes with protein powder in them…like cookies and brownies, then the heat can’t be bad for it.
Good question about the powder!
What does hemp milk taste like?
i do the same thing and try to avoid heat + protein powder – i feel like it makes it more clumpy or something!
I agree! I try to stir it in at the end because it gets all weird.
I love when people think organic cheese puffs are goof for them!
Sorry, I don’t know much about protein powder.
It’s true that the heat does something to the protein – it breaks down it in some way. But I also read somewhere that it is still considered protein and is good for you – it’s just in a different form. Haha, but I’m no scientist
I completely agree with you on the Whole Foods story. It’s hilarious and also a wee bit sad that people can be so trusting. It’s called a CHEESE PUFF for a reason!!
Hmmm my biology background tells me that heat is one of the conditions that denatures proteins, causing them to uncoil and change in identity. Regardless, you’re probably still getting protein, just different ones than you started with originally. As long as they taste good!
Sharon & Taila – Don’t feel bad. I think it happens often. It just stinks because I feel that company’s try to market their products that way and you have to a conscious shopper and read the nutritional facts to know the difference.
Pearl – I can’t really describe the flavor, more similar to almond or soy milk than regular cow’s milk though. It’s good!
eatingbender- That makes sense… maybe I can use it in hot cocoa then
Caroline – Thanks!!!
OMG we ALWAYS have customers saying that stuff… Thinking they can eat A vegan scone every day for breakfast… Healthy. Right. Haha, lbs of sugar and shortening are G.R.E.A.T. for you
I mean, yes, the Vegan Shortening doesn’t contain cholesterol thanks to the elimination of the animal products, but regardless, it’s IN NO WAY HEALTHY! Yikers!
Just saw this and thought of this post!
