HALF and HALF

by eatingbirdfood on November 15, 2008

I did it! I ran my first half marathon: 13.1 miles, which also happens to be longest distance I’ve ever run!! It was an awesome feeling to finally complete a goal I had been training 10 weeks for. I had kind of started to slack on my training and I only ever got up to running 10 miles, so I was a little nervous this morning. But overall I was probably more nervous about the weather; it was predicted to be thunder storms with a  90% chance of perception all morning. And, it was raining when I got up at 5:30, but during the race there wasn’t any rain and the temperature was 69 – the highest it’s been in quite a few weeks- it was really such a moderate/ almost hot day for the middle of November. We totally lucked out!!!  I think I was on a running high at one point during the race, even though by mile 10 my legs were aching – mainly my hi flexors (thanks Erin for the term) – ouch.  Overall it went well though!

Rounding the corner.. that’s me in the red shorts and my cousin in the black… sorry it’s not a close up- this was mile 11 and I wasn’t looking so lovely. Isaac took this picture, but both my parents, my niece, and my nanny came to cheer me on – so sweet!! And drum roll please…. my finishing time was 2 hours and 5 minutes and 3 seconds!!!!

Now I am limping around the house – my legs are so SORE, but nothing a glass of wine can’t cure. :)  I’ll probably go take a nap, make a quick trip to whole foods, and then get ready to go out tonight for my cousin’s b-day (who also ran the race – she the one in the photo above). Her and I both are probably going to be hobbling around tonight so I won’t look too out of place!!

Wow! What an awesome job! You go, girl!

Can I ask what your normal mile time is? I am planning a half marathon in the future and have no idea what to expect for my time. I normally run an 11 minute mile…

AWWW…. Thank you to everyone for all the congratulations wishes- I love you guys, so supportive and encouraging.

Rose- While training I usually ran an 8:30-9:30 mile. For the half my overall time averaged to 9:40 minute miles. So I would just count on adding a few seconds to your normal 11 minute pace for your overall goal time. When are you planning to run one?

Hey there! I’ve been getting an RSS feed of your blog for a while but never commented, but I wanted to say congratulations! I ran the same half marathon this weekend in 2:28. I’m so glad it didn’t rain and was so warm! This was my first time in Richmond and I really enjoyed the weekend there.

Beadie – That is so cool. I wish I could have said hello!

Sharonc- Thank you very much and congrats to you as well. I was very pleased with the weather also – I thought for sure we were going to be running in a thunderstorm! I’m glad you enjoyed your time in Richmond as well. I think it’s a nice little city.
