Flakey

by eatingbirdfood on November 17, 2008

This morning I went out on a limb and tried something different than my normal banana oats for b-fast. Quinoa Flakes! I like plain Quinoa, but when it comes to eating hot cereal for breakfast I like to have some creaminess (like my banana oats) and the quinoa flakes provide just that. The flakes, just as plain quinoa are a complete protein, as well as, wheat and gluten free! I prepared 1/3 cup with 1/2 a banana, 1/2 cup of hemp milk and 1/2 cup of water. And it only takes 90 seconds to cook on the stove top! Once it was done I stirred in 1/2 tbsp of ground flax. 100_2219

Overall, it was good – I finished the whole bowl, but I kept thinking that I wished I had just made oats instead. Granted quinoa does have more protein and it’s probably good to switch up my breakfast every once in a while. So yea, I might make it again, but probably not often – and the flakes definitely won’t be replacing my oats.

I have been eating those lately because I have discovered that I might have an oat allergy…BOO! I have been playing with how to make them a little tastier. They definitely require some added sweetness. I like to add maple syrup, cinnamon, and raisins. I do like the texture of this cereal.

Very interesting. I am loyal to my oats and would probably have had the same reaction as you.

seeliverun- it was really creamy, and had a bit of an earthy/grainy taste. It wasn’t sweet, but I added 1/2 a banana and unsweetened vanilla hemp milk for sweetness though.

Wow, interesting – I’ve never heard of Quinoa Flakes! And from the title I thought it was crunchy cereal. It looks just like oatmeal! Too bad it lacked in taste, but it sounds like a nice alternative once in a while.
